Speaking of thugs, this from the NY Times: Two security guards blocked reporter Tara Sullivan from going into the locker room after the tournament today because she was a woman.

Also, several years ago, Golf Week reporter John Hawkins wrote that he was threatened by a security guard with eviction from the grounds because, get this, he stood on the back of a golf cart so he could see above the crowd on the 18th green.

Like I say . . .

Most of the security guards working the tournament aren't employees of Augusta National, they were temps hired to help out.  The officials of the club already apologized to the reporter and agreed the security guard did not handle the situation properly.

What precisely is a " foofaraw ", Jay Busbee?

Re: the rules, since they set them, I wonder if they brief all players (and media for that matter), as to what the rules are beforehand so that they don't have to "show up" (translated as either to embarass or one-up) a person during a media session.  Reference following article quote, "Augusta National member Ron Townsend then reached over and turned Fowler's cap forwards ."  If Fowler was aware of the rules, then his bad.

Don't have all the facts to decide, but, in general, have no problem with AN setting its own rules.

Not sure if the spelling is correct-but that's clearly a Simpsons/Kent Brockman reference, which automatically earns bonus points.   It's possible the whole thing is argle bargle.

Mind this. Anyone asking him to turn his hat around is a f ew cee kay eye enn gee hole where excrement emerges. And I can watch my language. But, I'll decide when to call a d1ckhead a d1ckhead, or a d*ckhead, or a deekheed, or a duckhead, whenever I like - thank you.

TBH, who gives a fuck. Pardon my french.....but a hat backwards is hardly insulting, rules or not, hat forwards or backwards doesn't really matter.  A backwards hat is not a sign of the maturity level of the person wearing it. IMO a backwards cap looks better than a golfer wearing a cowboy hat.

Traditions get in the way of common sense sometimes. Times change, some people get stuck behind

Augusta can suck it.  We're supposed to revere them as they wish the whole world would conform to their idea of a perfect world where the women stay in the kitchen and never ask questions, every black man is a "boy" who needs to be told to to go buff your shoes, and the kikes can manage your bank account but God forbid they tarnish your club by even setting foot there?  Bunch of ignorant backwards assholes.  Keep a sweet ass course together and host a tourney that's real fun to watch.  Really rich.  Doesn't make them any less ignorant or backwards.

I don't see the big deal on either side.

I'm 18 and I take my hat off indoors. It's the way I've always been taught to, and I don't think it's much of a big deal at all . I wear hats more than most people, but I find them a little annoying indoors, so I take 'em off. Maybe the difference between me and Rickie is that I don't wear a hat to make a fashion statement, I wear a hat because it's comfortable.

Then again, what's the big deal to the guys at Augusta National either? The kid's going to be sitting there for what, 10 minutes max? Fielding questions about a game. By all accounts he is very polite and cordial, as much as his sponsors and people in the sports media would like you to think otherwise. Why not just ask him after the interview? That would hit home for me, I assume it would do the same for him, and then no one would be embarrassed and no one would be written about the next day.

That's just my opinion on this specific Augusta National issue though, so don't try to extrapolate to other ones.

I guess I just don't think this is an issue to get worked up about.

Hat indoors is fine IMO, not at the dinner table though

I'm already going bald and I find it less insulting to wear a hat then to show off my receding hair line.

You obviously haven't seen their member list and are wrong on all counts except for possibly no women (It's a private MENS club).   Here's a list from 2004, take note of some of the names - few "kikes" and wops.  First "black" member joined in 1990.

They're not even a men's club. They're just a club that is, thus far, without a woman member. They're not specifically a men's club.

Well, their last membership posting didn't include a woman.  I don't think they'd announce it very loudly if they let in a female member (same as they don't announce male members), although there were plenty of rumors after last year's Masters that Condi Rice had joined (although the first page of Google results seem to be from 2009).

I don't know about Augusta, but Rice is a member of Shoal Creek in Birmingham.

I don't see how this is much different than the color line in baseball before Jackie Robinson. There was no official policy calling for racial segregation, but all the teams followed this unwritten rule.  In my opinion, once Augusta National and the Masters became a cornerstone of professional American golf and started collecting millions in TV contracts, effectively subsidizing member fees, they became more open to public scrutiny of their membership makeup.  What they're doing seems to be perfectly legal, but that doesn't make it right.

    • There are plenty of those guys. A guy nearby often has students see him every week or two. The students "get better" during the lesson because the guy says a bunch of things, and they've been hitting a 7I for the past 45 minutes, so they've kinda gotten in a groove. I often tell my students to go away and not come back for six weeks, because that's how long it'll be until they start to see some real progress. (I teach plenty of people every two to three weeks, but they all know they're not going to get something all that new, and that we're kind of in "bumper bowling" mode at that point where I'm just trying to keep them on the lane we've chosen to go down.) The USGTF is a money-making operation. If you're willing to pay them, they'll keep making you a "higher level" instructor. I've known people who can't break 90 who go through it and are "level 3" or something… because they gave them $8k and took two weeks of "training." The PGA… doesn't really teach you a ton about teaching, either. And what they do teach you… let's just say it's not always the best. There are plenty of really, really great instructors… who aren't PGA members. And many bad ones who are. It'd be impossible to actually teach all that you need to know about golf to be a great golf instructor, so that's not as much of a knock on the PGA as you might think it is. Nobody's going to spend six years in the PGA paying $30k/year to ONLY learn about golf instruction. That's what I estimate it would cost to distill and impart and practice the actual "here's how to be a good golf instructor" stuff. Oh boy. I know Brendan a bit. Used to text him. These articles are cringe, and I'd say that to him, too. They feel like clickbait. Yeah… BTW, I may have mentioned this before, but he's a college placement guy. He helps kids find college programs to play golf. He also argued strongly against Natalie going where she is quite happy to be right now. 😉
    • Just noticed a knock off for $30 on Amazon for those so inclined
    • As I read the article, I thought, "This article is garbage. It's poorly written and says nothing. It's as bad as he's claiming the instructor he's criticizing to be." Then I realized it's the same guy that wrote this gem: Lo and behold, it's basically the same thing I said about the last one. This guy just doesn't like golf instruction and he doesn't know shit about swing theory. And possibly physics, even though his bio says he's a scientist. He's completely misunderstanding what the purpose of a tilted arc is. It takes advantage of the anatomy of the human body and it's ability to generate power through rotation. Part of how it "creates" power too is by lengthening the swing arc, which allows more time to transfer energy and speed from your body to the club and ultimately, to the ball. There's a reason long drive guys don't have short swings. There is a reason the one inch punch is so hard to execute and more people get KO'd by a hook than a jab. The entire article, just like the last one I read, reads like the rantings of a guy that just doesn't like golf instruction who's probably never had a good lesson in his life.
    • I've got the watch, since I'm left handed in everything except golf I wear watches on my right hand. From Shot Scope the suggestion was to wear it on my right hand but tell the unit that I'm a left handed golfer so it could try and pick up the tags better. I was already used to tagging when I had Game Golf and manually selecting on my Samsung watch with a prior app, so I just tap the sensor to the watch band before each shot and haven't had a single issue of it double counting or anything so far through 45 holes.
