Replacing 2 iron w/ a hybrid

So as the title says I'm looking to swap out my 2 iron for a hybrid and was looking for some suggestions as I have never purchased/played one before.  Do hybrids even come in an equivilant 2 iron or would I be looking at more of a 5 wood?

Check out the Adams line...you can get a new Idea Pro Gold with the Matrix shaft off Ebay for $60.  The 18* should be perfect for what you are looking for. I liked it so much I got the 20* as well.

Speaking purely from a research prospective and with no experience in this matter... 2 Hybrids certainly exist however it is not as simple as just swapping them out. It is not quite a 5 Wood but not quite a 2 Iron. You can hit it out of lies you wouldn't dream of hitting a 5 Wood out of but the ball flight is more similar to a wood then an iron. From what I have read for people who struggle with their 2 a Hybrid gives you a very good mix of forgiveness and length while maintaining a lot of the utility of an iron.

Adams is widely considered the king of hybrids but Callaway and Taylor Made both make very well rated hybrids as well. If your on a budget 2008/2009 Nickent Hybrids are also very well regarded.

TourSpoon and I have the same hybrids. The Idea Pro Gold both in the 18 and 20 degrees. I was not a hybrid believer and I loved hitting my longer irons. But I went ahead and replaced both by 2 and 3 irons. My 18 degree hybrid does fly farther than my 2 iron did and mt 20 degree farther than my 3 iron did. But I am able to choke them both down and get the same distance I was before. Adams hybrids made it into my bag because they were the only ones I could find where I could hit it low if need be. All the other brands I could not keep from going sky high. I can hit these high also, which is why I went ahead and did the swap. Very happy I did.

I'm not going to suggest a particular hybrid as many others can give you their opinions.  Just want to add that the biggest problem I had in switching to hybrids was the fact that so many out there are very closed faced compared to their equivalent iron replacements.  Make sure you try them at a driving ranging and not some indoor box if possible or you'll be yelling "fore left" alot.

I'll echo StrayCat's comments about closed face hybrids.  Many of them are marketed at higher handicaps.

Maybe the VR Pro line (Nike) is more to your liking in terms of hybrids.  Alternately, you might consider the more iron-like hybrids, such as Mizuno's MP Fli His.

Check the loft on your 2-iron.  Depending how old it is, you may be more happy with a 1-hybrid or a 3-hybrid.  Wasn't too long ago that a 2-iron was 19-20 degrees;  now you'll see 3s with less.

Why are you thinking of swapping out your 2 iron for a hybrid? What are you trying to accomplish?

Some 2h are only available in Tour versions which makes them a bit harder to hit.  For example, Callaway has a 2h in Diablo Edge Tour and Razr X Tour (18* loft, slightly open face) but there isn't a 2h in their non-tour lines.

Depends on which flavor of hybrids. Some hybrids are billed as "iron replacement" clubs - an IR hybrid would have the same loft and shaft length as the iron it replaced.

Then you have traditional Hs (I guess we can call them that) which are between and iron and a FW in length, and tend to have smaller heads than FWs. Traditional Hs have lofts which tend to be stronger, and shafts which tend to be longer, than a numbered iron.

I actually just went the other way, I replaced a hybrid with a 2 iron (3 iron from my old set I bent). My hybrid is a Titleist 585h 17* with a Fujikura Speeder shaft. I love it, but I like the versatility and looks of irons over hybrids. I would recommend a Titleist 910H 17*. The new adjustable hozzle gives it so many fitting options.

I'm a big fan of Adams Hybrids.......If you are looking for a little more forgiveness in a 2H, look at an Adams with the Boxer technology. If you are finding the Hybrids you are looking at are too closed face for you, check out the TM R11 and the Titiliest 910 Hybrids........... Fully adjustable will fix your problem

Theoretically you can't go wrong with Adams, but hit before you buy since they have a really wide range of products aimed at a very wide demographic. Some of their is kinda garbagey - mostly the shafts - and at the other end of the spectrum you see a lot of Adams hybrids in PGA Tour professional's bags. I've never seen a tour pro with a Wilson Staff Fybrid in the bag (maybe Padraig when he was playing well?) but I find it a nice transition between 3-wood and 3-iron.

Wilson Staff FYbrid.  Best club in the bag.  I switch drivers, woods, irons, wedges, putters-but the FYbrid stays in the bag.

Like TitleistLefty I have a Titleist 585h, but mine's 19˚.  It replaced my 3i and 5w, and I love it.  I can deloft it a bit off a tee (just teed up maybe 1/8") and hit it 230-235 off the tee (longest ever went carry+roll to ~270!), and a standard hit off the fairway goes 210-215.  It's not quite as good as an iron out of deep rough, but it does well out of standard rough.  And I imagine, like me, you probably aren't super consistent with a 2i out of deep rough anyway!  I'd recommend that club or the newer Titleist hybrid for sure.
