True story about the technology and club choice. I used to play fairway woods when they really were made out of wood... And my first set as a kid had wooden shafts. So, I am hitting a lot further than I did back when and until just recently... Started to pay attention to my swing and learn how to do it correctly. I am actually looking to go further in the future. After all... Age is only a number that I don't pay attention to.

One group plays golf that I witness, the other group reports on their golf electronically.

Sure, of course. I was originally thinking that it was people you met on line and now play golf with them.

I know I am repeating what many have already said, but at 46 years old I actually hit it further than I did at 26. Irons and woods. Shafts and the balls have made a huge difference in my game. I now routinely hit a 9 iron from 150 yards and about 30% of the time it's a pitching wedge. That being said, I work out much more now than I did a "hard partying" assistant professional. I usually will hit a couple 300 yard drives per round also (sometimes they even go straight).

Assuming the same equipment, I would have to say fitness determines how far you can hit a ball.  When I was younger we used to play with wooden woods but now the better balls, 460cc heads and fancy shafts have increased my distance.  Could not really get much more than 250 when I was in my late teens or 20's, but now get around 300 with good contact

  • Inesis Soft 500 golf ball

My dad hit the ball out to 230-250 yards will about his late 50's. Then he's dropped to 200-230 yards now, he's in his early 60's. Really he lost the a good chunk of his distance in the past 5-6 years.

Come on guy - 46 is just the prime for an amateur golfer.  If you had lost distance already then it would be from something else, not age.  I was still driving 250-270 when I turned 60.  Come back and talk to us when you are approaching 70.

Funny, I was told the same exact thing by two of my random playing partners who are 70*** or older last week. I never thought of 46 as being the "prime" in anything, but I guess golf is the exception? :-D

***They were really good players and former range marshalls. Not short hitters by any sense.

It may be nearing the end of what most would call the "prime" period for a golfer, but most players are still playing at as high a level as they ever have at that age unless injury has impacted their game.  I was at the highest level I'd ever played in my mid 40's.  I was 45 when my handicap dipped below 10 for the only time in my life.  I mostly kept my  handicap wavering around 10-13 until after I turned 60.

That's pretty much what the other golfers in this age group told me. One of the three partners was probably late 50s or early 60s if I had to guess and still puts the ball out there and played single digit golf. He hit his 3W pretty far. He also showed me how to play a hole "backwards", and do other fun stuff on the course. He challenged me to hit greens from other fairways and stuff like that. It was really fun and made the round really interesting.

Started golf at 52, now 58 and didn't loose an inch in distance so far. A couple of weeks ago I played with an 84 guy, he did hit it as far as I did. When he started to talk about 'la guerre' I realized he ment WWii. Verry impressive.

OT, but still cool to watch. FF to 54 seconds.

Getting back on topic. . .

So, the motions I am using are pretty much depending upon flexibility, but not so much strength (that I can feel, anyway). The more relaxed my muscles the farther I hit. I'm not a short hitter any more, and it seems like I should be able to retain my current distance for some time to come (maybe a couple decades)? Still working a lot on my form and mechanics, but it seems pretty stress free?

    • Let us be clear, unless you have proof of cheating, you just sound like a case of sour grapes.  In our club we have a guy who won club titles for many years.  Yes, he was a low single digit handicapper, but there have been quite a few others who played at his level.  Yet his mental strength and experience helped him win in many years when he shouldn't have.  Did he sandbag.  DEFINITELY NOT.  Did he just minimize his mistakes and pull out shots as and when needed.  Definitely.
    • Day 111 - Worked on my grip and higher hands in the backswing. Full swings with the PRGR.
    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
    • I would think that 3 in a row with the same players might get some behind the scenes examination from the SCGA if they were suspect.  Are there any clubs questioning the results?
    • What simple fact? A golf match is not a coin flip — there is a fact for you. I'm trying to help you, and you're throwing out what could easily be called sour grapes. Come with FACTS, not weak analogies. Then you've got nothing. Hopefully they've done a better job of making their case. 😛
