Who do you think will (or should) win TOUR Player of the Year? My vote goes to Luke Donald. Really solid player this year. (I thought about making a poll, but I was sure I'd leave someone important out and you can't edit poll options.)

I chose Donald too. He was unbelievably consistant, always on the leaderboard and a very solid OWGR No.1

I don't think Bradley deserves the POY, he was too inconsistent in my opinion, lots of missed cuts and average play. But I give him the Rookie of the Year.

I think there are no real contenders other than those two. Perhaps Simpson, Haas or Schwartzel, but their seasons were not POY worthy in my opinion.

Certainly nobody has been as consistently good as Donald this year and he is the leading money winner. But, my problem is he was never great and only had one win.  I am only speaking for myself and from my biased mindset, but I value victories and especially those in majors, more than consistently high finishes week after week.  Therefore, I would go with Keegan Bradley simply because he had more victories than Donald, one of those was a major and no one else on tour can match that this year. (No other major winner had another PGA tour victory). I don't care about all of Donald's top 10 finishes and Bradley's missed cuts.  I remember back in 2005, I believe Natalie Gulbis led the LPGA in top 10 finishes and no one would ever consider her a player of the year candidate and in fact kept asking why she didn't win. Victories and majors are the bottom line for me (JMO) and on that front Donald has failed. But that said, I have no doubt Donald will get POY.

Can't be much doubt about that, surely? #1 on the money list ($5.84 million), #1 in top 10 finishes (13 of 18), #1 in scoring average (68.86), #1 in putting (.773 strokes gained per round) and #1 in the OWGR.

Yeah, yeah, sure he'd "give it all up for one major", but if the question is who was consistently the best player on tour this year, the answer is blindingly obvious.

From a viewers staindpoint I would vote Keegan Bradley. He put on the best show at the PGA that I've seen all year.  He's got quite a game.

Hard to knock Donald, though. He has the $$ and the stats to back it up.

Talking about show Schwartzel at the Masters was pretty good as well!

  • 1 month later...

Figured I revive this with the season complete...Congrats to Luke Donald supporters as the numbers here clearly support his case.

The fact that this is still up for debate amazes me as Luke Donald answered a lot of critics with his clutch win to take the $ title, but Luke made reference to the delay in sending out the ballots being an indication that there may be an American born player bias that could steal it away from him.

Donald, Simpson and Bradley are the only 3 with a shot and it should go to Donald as he is ahead or tied with those two with in every important category except Major wins.  Is there really a chance that he will be robbed?

I hope not. Bradley was impressive, but not Donald impressive.

imho:

- Donald, but if you really don't like that guy then...

- Rory cause of Masters meltdown and US Open recovery, but if you really don't like these 2 guys then...

- choose Bradley, Clarke or Schwartzel because of exciting playoff, romantic win or amazing finishing holes... but if you really don't care about major wins then...

- randomly choose Simpsons or Haas cause they are the 2 left they did something relevant this year, but at this point why not choosing...

- Tom Lewis and his opening round at The Open, his Silver Medal and his maiden win at the Portugal Masters?

To conclude: not giving this title to Luke is just ridiculous imho...

I might be biased, but I think it should go to Bradley. They've each got 2 PGA Tour wins (Bradley has 3 if you count the Grand Slam of golf, which I don't), but Bradley won a major. All of Donald's top 10s are what make it close.

Agree with you on most things Jamo, but not this. Luke made 17 of 19 cuts and won the Vardon Trophy with an adjusted stroke average of 68.86. Keegan made 18 of 28 cuts and was 30th in stroke average at 70.26. It's really hard to argue that he played the better golf when looking at the year as a whole. Even if you're also from Hopkinton!

Luke Donald, hands down. Keegan can win Rookie of the Year and if Luke Donald teases him about winning POTY, he can say "I can't hear you with this Wanamaker Trophy blocking my ears."

I didn't realize that there was even a question on this... Donald for sure.  Like others have said, Keegan had a great year, but Donald was far and away the best and most consistent player all year long.

    • Day 20: Did 30 minutes after getting home from work, before kid's baseball practice. This session was piecing out the new hip move in transition, doing 2-3 rehearsals from the top, and then hitting a ball from between P5/P6. Did another 45 minutes after baseball practice and dinner. Did 30 more minutes of what I did earlier, and then about 15 minutes of full swings trying to incorporate athletically.
    • Day 296: did a stack session.
    • Day 126: 5/1/24 Putting and chipping practice. Slow motion swings with 8-iron.
    • #4 - 1st hole at Kingsbarns I rolled in a 15 footer for birdie. Showed my caddie an old guy could still play a bit. #3 - 18th hole at Basin Harbor Club, Vergennes, VT. I had played matches against my nephew over the years. He had never beaten me although through the years he had become a long hitting teenage golfer. I was 1 up but bunkered near the 18th green. My nephew had a long putt for birdie. I splashed out of the bunker to 4 feet. He rolled his first putt close and I gave him the par. Sadly for him, I rolled mine in and won our last match. He went off to college and then Europe for a Ph. D. It was our last match. Family champion forever. #2 - First playoff hole in the City of Livonia, MI “65 & Over” division. I rolled in an 8 footer that broke about 4-5 inches. #10 Whispering Willows GC. #1  18th hole at TPC Prestancia, Sarasota, FL. A 4 foot slicing putt for par to beat the prior year’s Member/Guest winners and win the Member/Guest with my father at his club. I was having heart palpitations as I played the final hole solo when my father put two in the water. There was never a better golf sight for me when that ball dove into the hole.
    • Finally, wedges getting somewhere. This one a punch gap from 87 yards to about 12 feet. Contact and ball flight absolute restaurant quality. It's nice when grass comes back.
