@GJBenn85 - I played once or twice a year for the last 12 years not really knowing how to play properly.  Then 2 years ago I bought new clubs and got a little more serious.  Last year I started keep a true score and my average was 140+.  I took a couple of lessons and during those lessons I learned to correctly grip the club and swing properly. This year I just kept at it going to the range at least once a week.  I had a lot of bad habits that I had to break and they crop up every now and then but overall the game is improving. I also read two great books, Hank Haney's The Only Golf Lesson You Will Ever Need and Joe Parent's Zen Golf and these really helped, especailly the Zen Golf book.  I truely learned how much of a mental aspect this game has and its effects.  Reading this book and applying it not only help me cut strokes off my score it helped me enjoy the game a lot more.  Goal wise I started with the "break 100" but got frustrated when it wasn't happening.  I now do a "score 7 or less on every hole" and it helped me focus on the hole I was on and not the overall score.  My last round of 113 gave me a per hole average of 6.3 so next year I am looking at a goal of 6 per hole.

I have a few goals so to speak, the first being to build / have a swing that I am happy with and that is accepted as a good by peers who i consider qualified to have an opinion ( Low hcp'rs  / club pros )

I am hovering around the 97-105 avg at the moment after 2 months playing 2-3 rounds a week. So shortish term I would like to get an official handicap in the mid teens. I think this is doable as consistency is what robs me of those 10-15 shots. Ie hitting terrible 30 yard duffers with clubs i know i can hit well. Basically not concentrating.

Long term: I don't really know how long long term is but i want to be a single digit handicapper, at the moment that means taking around 20-25 shots off my avg round so I'm thinking this will take a good while to do.

While i like others would love to score a few eagles / hole in ones I don't really think these should be a main goal.. A goal is something that you set yourself knowing that with work and commitment you should be able to reach it. Luck plays way to big a part in the above that it is not a constant to focus on, and even if you do get your hole in one soon what have you actually achieved?

My goal was to get to a handicap of 10, down from 17 over this season.  I have regressed and my handicap is worse now that it was then, after shooting two 14 overs at the start of the season.

I changed my goal to be more consistant with driver and 3 wood, its not quantitative at the moment though... but I am getting better and my handicap is dropping again.  One small part of the goal is to not swing so hard, move hips forward and keep the head in the same/similar place - I usually move my head towards the target which causes duffs and slices.

As a new golfer, my goal was to be a bogie golfer in a year.     its been just a year & I've failed.     I am playing high 90's.     I usually can do it through 9 holes, but not a full 18.     With all the time I've put into the game in the last year, it's really frustrating - to date I've played between 80-90 times, with countless range sessions thrown in. My long term goal is to shoot in the 80's consistently ... don't know if I have it in me (I'm 47), time will tell

I admire all of your goals.  Some are obviously well thought out and a plan is in place to attain them.

I'm just a little shocked how many people have such specific goals for a game.  Maybe more of you compete at some level than I realize.

goal for this year: break 90. i came as close as i've ever come last weekend. shot a 44 on the front nine, which includes an 8 on the 9th and a cold putter.  the back nine was a different story though. 5 minute waits on every shot and i wasn't able to stay in that rhythm and ended up with a 95.

ultimate goal: single digit handicap. i had the goal of being a scratch golfer, but i'll shoot for being a single digit 'capper before i worry about scratch.

You'll get there... I've felt like I close to breaking 90 for a long time now... since at least this time last year but I barely did it last week... sometimes it just takes a while.  Just keep plugging away and find ways to improve and you'll be there.

to me i don't like making handicap my goal, because it puts to much pressure on a single number. What i like to do is make smaller goals in my golf game. I know were i am now, and i know were i need to improve, i know if i imporve there my handicap will go down.

so my current goals are,

continue to develop a solid swing (been in process for the past two years, i break this down into sub goals as well. Set up, backswing, downswing, ect)

get my putting more consistant

get my short game so i have a better shot pattern around the hole, inside 2 feet.

Right now these are my goals, the bottom two have caused me huge problems the past month.

You have to set goals for yourself, but it is an individual thing.

A lower average score and a lower handicap are the most likely targets,

which can be obtained by practice,  dedication and a series of

lessons from a pro' golfer.

My personal goal is to be able to play golf for at least another  9

years at my present or slighter lower handicap.

My age is 76 and I get so much pleasure from golf.

1.  My goal at the moment is to actually hit the ball every time I swing at it.

2.  Once I accomplish that my goal will be to hit the ball solidly every time I swing at it.

3.  After that, my goal will be to get the correct distance every time I swing at it.

4.  And finally, once I have all of the above done, to hit it in the direction I want it to go.

Sounds easy when I break it down like that.

I've had 3 aces, broken 70 in competition. I'm now 53, so my serious competitive days are behind me, but I still have this one goal -

I want to play one round where I leave no shots on the course. In other words, one round that is the absolute lowest I can shoot. If I hit a green in regulation inside 10 feet I make the putt. Outside 10 feet, no more than a 2-putt. 100% up & down on missed greens. If I ever do that I'll be thrilled. :)

thanks for the encouragement.  i know i'll get there eventually.  the really frustrating part is that i went out the next day, and after the first 4 holes, i just stopped keeping score because i was playing so badly.

my target is to eliminate the "blow up" holes where i make 7's, 8's and (eek) sometimes 9's.  currently, i average about 4 of these a round.  if i can just get rid of those, i'll be a long way towards breaking 90. key for me is hitting a playable tee shot.

Thank you for posting a comment I said earlier.. haha

Sounds to me like a lot of you are for score, handicap or just flat out hitting the ball solid. For those of you who don't have a hole in one, it's the best feeling in the world so try for that. As for me, I'm after that double eagle. It'll be tough, but determination is the key.

    • It’s simple. Hook it onto the tee box of the adjacent hole. Get a GIR with your approach. Birdie hole. #5 Hook it to the adjacent fairway Hit green with next shot. Birdie hole. I call it the Bill Method.
    • I’ll have to pay attention more attention to the area when I’m there. I know the area to the left of the bunkers off the tee is fescue/native vegetation but I can’t remember what’s around the tee boxes. Something to consider still is that you can’t see the green from the tee. You can’t even see all three bunkers IIRC. So I could have a line on the drive but still not know where it ends up. I think I’d be a lot more comfortable going with driver if I played here more regularly and had a log in my head of where shots tend to end up like I do at the other county courses. I have never hit driver on this hole off the blue tees. I have done it from the gold, but the length and angle are different, and during casual rounds when I didn’t care that much about score. I’m not sure the best time to try it is the second hole of a tournament. Or at the very least, I’m uncomfortable with the idea and that’s probably enough reason not to do it. I see what you’re saying. Wind is supposed to be pushing out more to the right on Saturday, too. I could probably aim right at the bunker and not end up in it. I don’t think there’s anything near the green other than that tiny bunker that would give me trouble. Well, trouble in addition to my short game deficiencies that is. Yea, me too. All I’m thinking is get it in play, put it near the green, chip on and two putt for 5. I’ll have plenty of opportunities to use my length as an advantage later. You realize all of this theory crafting will be moot when I chunk it off the tee, right? 😆
