I'd say that's probably pretty fair. I remember watching him at the British Open at Carnoustie. Was the the most amazing play from a young player I'd ever seen.  I'll be interested to see how Seung-yul Noh progresses in the next 3-4 years. He flat out bombs it, and decent short game too.

What is the measurement?  It is never objectively defined.  We're all just supposed to know what "talent" is.

For golf, is it swing speed, accuracy, putting, short game stats, long game stats, etc.?  It's not defined by the person making the comparison, so it provokes discussion and controversy.

Rory is an excellent golfer at a young age and has won a bunch so far.  Tiger is older, was an excellent golfer at a young age, won a lot and is still winning.

In Massachusetts speak, "they are both Wicked Talented!!"

I think people were fairly quick to call Ben Crenshaw and Loren Roberts talented, but yeah, not the way they fawn over people who bomb it.  That's where Daly was truly underrated though - around (and on) the greens he was deadly too.

No point in debating talent but tiger has had some of the most entertaining shots regardless.

The context isnt really there but i still like this one the most

Yea, when you think how good Rory is, it really puts into perspective how good Tiger was at that age. He'd won a couple of majors.

As for 'talent', it's a tough one. We all know how hard Tiger worked as a kid, so its hard to tell where the talent and sheer hard work merged together.

I'd go with Tiger though.

A bit nitpicky, but Tiger only had 1 major win at 22 also. His 2nd major was the '99 PGA at the age of 23 and 8ish months.

I'm not sure I fully agree with that. Some players decide to learn their trade by playing college golf in America, others decide to learn their trade by becoming pro. I don't think turning pro as a 20/21 year old straight out of 3 or so years of college golf can be compared to a fresh faced 16/17 year old turning pro and trying to make it.

Ty Tryon is a good example of an ultimate fail turning pro so young ( 16 I think? )

Too much, too soon.

And at the other end you have players like Seve Ballesteros turning pro at 16 and having fantastic careers

I wonder if the era had anything to do with that.

Ty was bombarded with endorsements and expectations....I wonder if Seve was, maybe he was, but I doubt to the same dgeree

Perhaps. I was too young (10) to remember the hype surrounding Ty and the pressure put on him the year he turned pro. I remember him being on one of the Tiger Woods PGA Tour games though, which says enough about the hype!

Justin Rose turned pro at 17 after finishing T4 at the Open and missed his first 21 cuts...he managed to turn that around though somewhat!

More likely just personality and  a bit of luck. If you fail, your choice will always be criticized.  If you succeed, you made the right one.

To me, Talent is getting the ball in the hole in the least amount of strokes possibe.  It doesnt matte if you are luke donald and sink every putt, or Seve and make birdie from 3 holes over.

Tiger has been the best ive ever seen (never saw jack, arnie or seve play) at getting the ball in the hole.  He may not drive the ball well, but he sank any putt he needed to, and made some miraculous recovery shots no one could have imagined possible.  Tiger has raw golf talent that has since to be matched.

BUT, Rory has not had the chance to do so, he may not have won the masters by 12 strokes his first year, which i think gives Tiger a lot of points in the talent category, but he may make up for it in some other way.

I Think we just need to wait and see what happens with Rory...im certainly excited to find out

ANd.....on a side not, iacas,

how do you say "John Daly has more talent on his pinkie, that Tiger does in his hole body"  This just confuses me and makes me laugh very hard, i dont understand...please elaborate

Because most people don't define talent the way you do. To most people, talent is independent of hard work. John Daly's never done a "Tiger day" in his life, or anything close to it. If Tiger was always as lazy as Daly, we might not ever have heard of him. Daly can get away with it, to some extent.

    • Day 206 (24 Nov 24)  - An easy session with the 54deg wedge and hard foam balls / one simple goal - distance control thru backswing length while not decelerating.  Had a playing partner comment they noticed me decelerating on a couple short wedge shots in last round.  Hit from distances from close to 40yds down to 20.
    • Musgrove Mill hole #15 was converted to a par 3 after Hurricane Helene. Today, I had 145 from the tee which is a perfect 9-iron for me. I aimed just right of the hole and pulled it a few feet. Clanked off the stick down into the hole and ricocheted out of the hole 13’ away. Drained the putt for a birdie after repairing the hole which was damaged . Not sure if it would have counted as a HIO, but I was pretty excited!
    • Day 55 - 2024-11-24 Did five levels of Operation 36 on GSPro (different courses). 🙂 Was -4 from 200 yards (32) intentionally laying up on each hole (i.e. not hitting a 5I or something). Shot… 22, 24, 26 from 25, 50, and 100 yards. I forget my 150-yard score, but obviously it was < 36. Putting was odd… (and I did it with the wedge or a 7I or whatever was in my hand).
