Simple, Specific, Slow, Short, and Success - The Five "S"s of Great Practice

No.

You do it at 30% until you can do it at that speed or length almost every time.

Then you do it at 35%.

Then 40%.

Eventually it becomes 100%.

You don't go from 30 to 100.

After you get to 100 the right way… you get to 100 without having to think about it.

I had no idea. I mean, when working on my priority this past winter, I didn't just execute it a couple times and jump right up to full swings. I repeated the 30-50% partial swings for weeks (because it took that long to get near 100%). I remember holding back for a while at about 80% and even going back to partials when I'd fail, but I did jump pretty fast to the full swing. 

It was even worse with the driver of late. The slow partial swings did wonders - got it up to a 100% success rate fairly quickly. But then I went straight to near full swings too soon. What had been very encouraging on the range just fell apart on the course. 

I'll take your advice.

Can you explain the difference between mapping in a swing, and a slow swing?

Mapping is ridiculously slow, and you don't really even hit a ball at all. It's usually so slow you just end up pushing the ball a few feet forward.

Got it thanks. I apparently have been doing a lot of mapping when I should have been doing 10%,20%,30%, etc... swings.

I have trouble turning mapping into a swing, and I think I could improve my practice by doing say a 20% swing making they change, and then speed up when I can. I'm going to give that a try instead of mapping.

Slow movements seem to work for me and my kids as well. Holding a position might not give your body the same effect as moving slowly?

I guess it kind of depends upon how you best learn new movements?

Confession: I'm Henry and I have been an improper practicer for my entire golfing life. 

Per some advice from @iacas on myswing thread I have read through this thread, re-read this section of LSW and read the thread on "changing the picture". I have done some slow work at home, but today I am headed to the range for the first time to actually spend an entire session practicing slow and specific movements trying to make changes in my swing. I hope I can truly enjoy the process even if it takes a while to make progress. 

Curious- how long did it take for some of you to make some swing changes while using the 5 "S's of great practice?

How skilled you are, how big a change the piece is, how often you get to practice, how ingrained the "old" thing is, how attentive you can be, how good your proprioception is, what guidance you have…

Makes sense...sounds like trying to make any significant changes to anything else in life. Well I will document my progress in my swing thread..hopefully I have good news to report in time.

Here’s a video that got me thinking about this again, I don’t necessarily agree with it though. But would you say his “slow motion” swings are really mapping swings?

I'm guessing what he does at 25:53. I don't like it. That's not mapping, that's not practicing, that's nothing, really. It's a guy looking weird at the driving range.

I didn't watch it, either. Just randomly skimmed through some parts and happened to catch that part.

    • Day 312 - Better finishing position, fuller backswing, PRGR to see how swing speed was. 
    • Going to a Friendsgiving tomorrow and I am bringing a no-bake cheesecake. I make the crust too big, but I think it turned out good. The filling is really good. 
    • Sure, but how was your alignment? 🙂 Day 53 - 2024-11-22 Mirror work after getting back home. Wife is a superstar for her career/job/whatever.
    • I would say your back nine is the second nine you play that day. It's part of what makes getting some of those holes tougher. Or, if 18 holes are played pretty often, out of A, B, and C, and you often play A and C, A is the front and C is the back, regardless of the order you play them in. That way not birdieing C #7 isn't overcome by birdieing the easier A #7 on a day you played it C-A instead of A-C. But, at the end of the day, nobody really cares except yourself.
    • Day 128: played 9. Nice little even 9, with 2 birdies and 2 bogeys.
