Here's the cliff notes, I'm a 10 hdcp I'm straight off the tee and very consistant with my Irons..........until, gulp......TODAY. I started slicing everything from 7 iron to my SW, some of them were worm burners as well, they were slices and not big shanks. I went to the driving range and hit a lot of balls only to leave more degected than ever. I'm tripping bad. PLEASE HELP!!!! thanks

im not a golf guru or anything, but since the clubs you said were slicing i might say you were rising up and since the clubs are shoter you are hitting them wrong. just mytwo sense

Relax.  Breathe.  It will be better in the morning.  Sounds like your frustration on the range was mounting, probably causing you to grip the clubs tighter, which can lead to slices in a heartbeat.

Don't worry.  Next time out will be better.  We've all been there.

Don't worry about it. You had a bad day. My best advice is to FORGET ABOUT IT! Don't keep those bad shots in your head and write it off as a bad day. If the problem continues or forgetting about it isn't working I'd say keep your head down. When I'm hitting those type of shots is pretty much always because I'm coming up and out of it.

Go back to basics.  Slow things down.  Your swing will come back to normal.  It will happens to me if I rush things due to adrenaline, nerves, stress, etc.

These shots def sound like symptoms of rushing from the top and/or coming up out of your swing. Relax, stay down, hit the back of the little white ball, follow through, and don't stand up or look up until the ball is well on its way.

Go to the range and hit some punch iron shots, 1/2 - 2/3 swing, until you get your feeling and timing back, then progress to the full swing.

This happens to me if I stand too close to the ball.

First of all don't freak out. Look for the changes you made. You obviously must have made some.

Take a break. Ask a pro. If you played consistent before, you'll get your game back soon enough.

Just stick with it. Golf's a process.

cheers mate

Haha Frozn, don't freak out mate. I have gotten the shanks quite a few times. I mean literaly full blown shanks with any club. Like it comes off the hosel and goes low and 45 degrees right. The most horrible shots you've ever seen. And I will tell you the drill or thought pattern thats gotten me out of it every single time: Keep your right palm/back of left hand facing the ground/ball as loing as possible. That's all I do and it all comes back.

You've got to keep that right palm facing the ground on your takeway to stop having an open face and coming into the ball open. That's what has worked for me every time anyhow. I hope you come right.

You r prolly sliding a little towards the ball on ur downswing making the club to ball distance shorter and hitting it wit ur hosel.Try putting ur feet together and making 9 to3 swings with ur wedges then gradually spread ur feet apart concentrating on getting to ur left side

Happens to us all.  My suggestions as follows:

1)  Take a week off from golf, meaning don't pick up a club and don't think about it

2)  When you get back to the range after a week, as suggested by others, start with punch shots, 3/4 swings, etc. and work up to a full swing

3)  For me, when I get into a weird groove and begin "shanking" it with irons, i've either started standing too close to the ball for whatever reason and/or have gotten to far inside and flat on my backswing.

Just had a weird round this weekend. I'll video my swing at the range this week and compare it to video of when I was playing well. I recommend video recording your swings and saving them somewhere (feel isn't real). That way, you can see what you are doing well when your game is on, and see what your tendencies are when your swing is off.

I shot my best round ever one day (77) and started slicing everything the next. A video of the swing and some tips from Erik got me on the right track again. Golf is weird.

Next time you hit balls, concentrate on making a full shoulder turn.  I sometimes start coming "over the top" out of nowhere, resulting in a pull/fade or slice that can take a few weeks to correct.  Usually, it comes down to simply not making enough turn to give myself room to approach impact from the inside.  As I've gotten more experience, I can now recognize it, which makes the correction period much quicker.

The one I do play whenever I visit there is Ross Bridge; something about this course that is just good fun. I hope to play more of the courses in the future, but tomorrow is promised to no one, so hope is the key word. Have Fun, iSank

    • Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
