Hi all

guy in the league walks off his shot (paces to the flag) from the fairway before his opponent (me) has taken his shot. Annoying to say the least. is this a penalty or just a jackass not understanding etiquette? how best to handle..thx

No penalty....if he is walking all the way to the green that is outrageous and would cause serious pace of play issues if he is doing this for shots over 50 yards. If he is merely pacing off to a yardage marker in the fairway or a 150 or 100 stake while you are hitting that is annoying, but he could just be trying to be mindful of pace of play. If he's doing it while you're swinging and in your line of sight, politely ask him to refrain for his safety....if he still persists, tell him it's distracting and again politely ask him to stop.

Depending on the distance, it could be an undue delay of play. If it's for a short game shot, it might be reasonable on occasion. Etiquette certainly dictates, in general, waiting clear of the shot of the guy who's "up," but it could occasionally come up that overall pace of play will be better served by pacing off a difficult distance estimate and then clearing out so he can get back to his ball and play while you actually play your shot.

That's a reach, though. Based on available information, I concur: jackass.

no its all the way to the flag, sometimes from over 150 yards, sometimes when he is right next to a fairway marker..... I've never seen it before but wonder if I should ignore and play like everyone else does or should I call him on it? (of course if I get mad and focus on him I will probably play worse)

What? He walks over 150 yards to "measure"?

Give him an ad for Dick's and circle or highlight a GPS or range finder, then refuse to play with him until he buys and uses one.

Completely unacceptable. I don't generally think it's a good idea to give somebody crap on the course, but if he's doing this when it's your turn, he needs to be slapped down immediately. There's less than no excuse for getting in the way of the guy who's "up."

If he does it on his own turn, I think he's plainly violating rule 6-7 by wasting 2-3 minutes per hole (i.e., half an hour to an hour per round). I'd let him know your objection and then take it up with the committee. IMO he should get 2 strokes each time.

What? Are you really serious? This guy walks off yardages from 150 and in?

I've never even seen or heard of it. But if I were you, I would ask him to stop.

Is there a league manager, or course management, you could also talk to? Tell them about this guy.

That is just plain nuts! Tour pro caddies don't even do stuff like this!

I do believe that if such a guy exists, he would be famous by now.  It is hard to believe somebody has the audacity to do that.  I felt a bit rushed once when my GPS stopped working, so I walked off a distance from my ball to a fairway marker to see if I had a reasonable chance of reaching a par 5 in two (it was about a 30 yard pace off from the 200 yard marker, and there was no 250 marker).

Undoubtedly you would have to call him on this if he's doing it from 150 yards out. I imagine that would take at least 2-3 minutes!

First I'd ask him to please find a better method of measurement.  If he ignored me or got snotty about it, I'd just play my shot and the hell with him.  The guy is either stupid or a total jackass - regardless, he needs to educated on how the game is played.

If possible, I would just play ahead, which I'm sure in leagues you aren't supposed to do.  I wouldn't even tolerate this with a friend.  Maybe one hole, but beyond that it's a joke.

Are you making this up? I really have trouble believing that. If it is true, the only possibly explanation is that the guy is genuinely retarded. You'd have to be a rainman type to even be able to pace that distance off more correctly than a yardage stake, and rainman was retarded.

I would call him out immediately.  I would say "are you ****ing kidding me?" as polite as I could.  And if he kept on doing it I would make sure and hit when he is at the green.  But in all seriousness I would talk to your league chairman about it.

I agree with Jeffrey that this is pretty hard to believe.

    • Day 206 (24 Nov 24)  - An easy session with the 54deg wedge and hard foam balls / one simple goal - distance control thru backswing length while not decelerating.  Had a playing partner comment they noticed me decelerating on a couple short wedge shots in last round.  Hit from distances from close to 40yds down to 20.
    • Musgrove Mill hole #15 was converted to a par 3 after Hurricane Helene. Today, I had 145 from the tee which is a perfect 9-iron for me. I aimed just right of the hole and pulled it a few feet. Clanked off the stick down into the hole and ricocheted out of the hole 13’ away. Drained the putt for a birdie after repairing the hole which was damaged . Not sure if it would have counted as a HIO, but I was pretty excited!
    • Day 55 - 2024-11-24 Did five levels of Operation 36 on GSPro (different courses). 🙂 Was -4 from 200 yards (32) intentionally laying up on each hole (i.e. not hitting a 5I or something). Shot… 22, 24, 26 from 25, 50, and 100 yards. I forget my 150-yard score, but obviously it was < 36. Putting was odd… (and I did it with the wedge or a 7I or whatever was in my hand).
