Titleist doesn't just give them away.  Top players are paid well to play Titleist.  Guys who aren't top tier still receive incentive payments based on how they finish each week.  That said, if golf ball manufacturers couldn't pay players, Titleist may not have the market share they do, but they'd still be leading the way or close to it.

I may be wrong, but I would think that pros would not use a ball that they did not have confidence in, regardless of what they were paid. That might not be true in all cases, but they have to play the ball that gives them the best chance to score.

True but nowdays all of the equipment is so good that a pro could play equally well regardless what the brand is.  Id honestly love to see what would happen if pros werent getting paid to play a certain brand and could play whatever they wanted.

Im not convinced that Titleist is a superior ball to anything else on the market and the fact that Titleist's marketshare is slowly being eroded is a testment that more and more golfers are waking up to the fact that Titleist maybe isnt really the #1 ball in golf afterall.

How would one judge the number one ball other than by sales figures.

There's no doubt Acushnet has put out their fair share of rocks over the years with the Titleist logo (there are/were a few but since I don't want to ruffle any feathers I'll stop at HVC) but for the most part when you're paying for a higher end Titleist - like I said, not their entry level duds - you're getting a great ball. It's been that way for 30 years so it'll take a while for some other brand to knock them off their pedestal.

Hey sean...I'll add another to the Titleist list of duds...the NXT  now replaced by the Velocity (which I have not played)

...that said I would also add that the Titleist line has some outstanding balls...starting with the obvious Pro V1 /V1X  , NXT Tour and my regular ball the humble DT So/Lo  ...I find that they play better than most at their respective levels esspecially in my all important short game ...I can tell the difference and I'm just a 17 'cap duffer!!

i.e. the Pro V1 spins like nothing else on pitches and chips and putts like butter...and the DT So/Lo performs better than other balls in its modest price range as well imo...

for these reasons I do believe that Titleist deserves it's #1 Ball in golf ranking:  Based on Performance

I have a dozen velocity balls in my bag now and don't like them at all.  I too was crossing my fingers for the best but in my opinion they are definately rocks.  I honestly don't believe I have ever hit a ball with a harder or heavier feeling.  They seem to perform ok but just feel horrible off the club.

I love the ProV1 & ProV1x balls, great all around, probably why most players play it regardless of sponsor loyalty.  I don't actually mind the NXT when I'm just out having a fun round, good for price and is alright if lost.  I tried the Velocities and found them average, it's slightly better than the DT Solo but not on par with NXT IMO. The only balls I play right now are: ProV1,ProV1x,Q-Star,Penta & the RBZ balls are great too !

I'll admit to playing every ball without prejudice, but when I find a ball that gives me inconsistent distances, I will not play it again unless I forgot to put anything else in the bag. The SoLo remind me of other balls I avoid just because the compression is too low and they tend to either balloon or sail too far with mid-irons. The NXT just leaves me cold. Too harsh with no payoff. It's not a distance ball and it's not a gamer. I'd rather play a Top Flite every day than the NXT or whatever it's become now. Yes - 100% dud.

I used to play Titleist DTs and HVC all the time years ago but getting back into the game, I decided to see if there was a difference. I played a round with a Pro-V I found. Amazing feel and almost no loss in distance. Very nice being able to hit curve balls out of trouble or making them dance on the green. I haven't tried any others on that calibre yet.

Now that I've got a range finder, I love knowing the exact distance to the hole and hitting a ball that will stop (or even back up some) where I hit it to.

I won't pay new ball prices for any quality ball. I buy Pro-Vs off Ebay @ $ $1.50 a ball or less.

You never know.

If they didn't give them away to every pro and advertised so much, one might be able to afford the ProV1, and they might sell more.

Overall, the TItleist price for balls is too high for what one gets, imho. Even the lesser known balls (anything other than the ProV1) are far overpriced.

I can find a Callaway HEX Chrome, a 3 piece urethane ball for $31 out the door. You can also find TM Balls on sale.

The only time I might be tempted to purchase a TItleist ProV1 is in the spring when they typically have a buy 3 dz, get 1 dz free sale.

A quick shout out to ONESOME, RaiderNation!

I have tried many golf balls. No ball has played better than the PRO V1, even for a 12-15 handicap like me. Yes I like some Callaway's and Pinnacles and Top Flite Strata's but consistent distance, great piercing flight control, and spin when I want it, is what the PRO V1 does for me. If it works for an amateur like me, I think we see what it does for the Pros every week. I buy the used PRO V1s from Walmart.

So in an alternate Universe where NIKE (take your pick) is the number one ball on tour, I have a feeling the PRO V1, would find it's way to the top ball played on tour once the Pro's started winning more tournaments with the PRO V1 than NIKE balls.

Just curious

Don't you think any ball company would furnish balls for free to a pro just so they would be seen playing their ball. Ever see a Top Flite being played on TV?

Sorry if this is a sidetrack, but this thread got me reminiscing about the Titleist DT Wound and the Titleist Balata. Talk about incredible feel...those were the days...

    • Day 91 (1  Aug 25) - Pre-tournament practice round today…had some great up and downs for par saves.  Rain came in this evening so it will be a totally different playing course tomorrow.
    • Jesus, when he keeps saying scissoring moment, ugh that is a horrible sounding phrase. Just makes me cringe. It doesn't help my mind went to Mr. Garrison from South Park. 🤣 If you know you know.  I think for the most part, golf shaft companies have gotten this figured out. They ask questions like, what tempo do you swing at. The whole scissor terminology sounds like they want to stand out a bit.  Yea, golfers load the golf shaft differently, and different bend profiles can help out. I do think swing speed matters as well. You probably want a golf shaft with lower torque if you swing faster.
    • Played 9 holes, shot a 39.  Kind of got around. Everything between the trees, so in play. Short game was rusty. Got to get back on that. Greens were stupidly slow because they got a lot of rain yesterday and probably couldn't cut them down. Usually in the summer they are firm and pretty fast for how sloped they are. Got to work on face to path a bit.
    • We agree here. Top of the car has a forward force, bottom of the car experiences a backward force via the braking. Both about the COM (somewhere in between). Result is a rotational flip. Since the forward force is still higher the car probably still globally travels forward. Sure, pretty basic. You really think there are deliberate twist forces applied? Like forcing the club head forward and simultaneously forcing grip end in the opposite direction? Heck I don't think we even slow down the grip end deliberately let alone force it the other way. Sorry, if I am missing something here. The orientation change is simple incidental because there is different rate of global movement of grip vs. clubhead throughout the swing. I also happen to think the best swings have the least amount of differential movement between the two end in the impact zone.  In my defense, I never thought one could do justice in covering all aspects of a golf swing in a paragraphs or two to begin with. Especially not with grade school physics..😜 Okay.
    • Wow, @DeadMan that is such a helpful breakdown of what’s around. Really excited to check a bunch of these out. Thank you. Will definitely go to Walnut Creek. Will also try and get a commonground tee time. Haven’t played many Doak courses yet! If your schedule frees up, let me know!
