I didn't read the part about how to change the slope for the women's tees. Have now changed it according to the formula that Erik provided. I'm looking forward to trying this out, probably playing on my ownsome on a crisp New Zealand Spring morning................

My problem are blowup holes, especially some tight Par 5s where you need to commit to your tee shot.  From the ladies tees the driving lines are easier and I should have long/mid irons to each Par 5 in 2 as well as wedges to each Par 3.  I will be chipping in 2 on some Par 4s as well.  If I play conservative I imagine I'll mishit a few 3 irons and have a few bad holes.

Great idea.

To be clear, on a hole where the forward tees are only 40 yards from where I normally land my ball, do I bump a wedge when playing the conservative round so that I leave the same second shot?

Erik,

I ignored this thread for a long time because I thought it was a "play it forward" thread and I already do. Perhaps including that you are looking for people to help the experiment would be helpful:

Quoting Erik, "If you're struggling to break 80, perhaps shooting a couple of 73s from some forward tees will be all that you need to be comfortable the next time you're six over with three to play. Or shooting 64 will help you stop backing up when you get a few under par from your regular tees."

Im pretty interested to see how this plays out. I sure hope it helps out as erik hoped. I havent broke 80 but have shot 81 a few times. I hope it helps put me there.

Jimdangels, I'm with you on this one. The main reason I'm doing this is to see if there is some sort of mental block about breaking 80. Like you, I've got close on several occasions, but never managed to pull it off. Maybe this will be the stimulus needed to get out of the comfort zone...............

We've got three courses, so I picked the course that I think is the least penal hitting driver from the reds. Otherwise, I'd agree with you (because of the trouble, not because I'll be in-between clubs). If a hole is playing 280, I can grip down and hit driver 220 which will leave, for me, a perfect lob wedge.

@Saig55: Is the Cordova CC you're going to play the same course that almost closed (or did close) a few years back? Probably played there a dozen times or so when I lived in Memphis - super tight with all the houses.

I feel like my strength are in my shorter irons so for the conservative round, if I focus on hitting fairways, I should score pretty well. I'm not expecting any good scores from the aggressive round.

I definitely think it can be useful for someone trying to break 80 for the first time, BUT, if you have never broken 80, then it is likely that you only flirt with it once every 4 rounds or less often.  If you have one of those good days where you would have flirted with the 70s, then your chances of doing it, quite possibly by a few shots or more is good, but you still have to have one of your better days.  If you put extra pressure on yourself from the start of the round (instead of the pressure you might feel just towards the end when having a chance for the 70s), it may counteract the advantage of less distance.

I have 2 courses I play regularly and am deciding whether to go from my usual blues at 6507 on the River to men`s gold at 5359 or ladies red at 4762 at the one where the tips are 6886 (which I usually play when I am by myself) or go from my regular whites at 6521 on the Ranch to men`s gold at 5842 or lady's red at 5582 with the tips at 7090 (which I have played once).  The River course offers more of a contrast, but can be a bit harder to get out on.  The Ranch is in the process of building some shorter women`s tees, but it doesn`t look like this will be ready this year.  FWIW, both courses are over 9,000 feet elevation, so will be really short regardless.

The experiment is an interesting one, but neither strategy is the one I would use if I was playing the forward tees competitively as I would take a hole by hole approach that I might adjust depending on how I was hitting the ball at the time.

Ya I was thinking about that and your right I might flirt with 70's every 4 rounds or so. A month ago I was constintley follow an 81 with a 95. Last 5 rounds or so I have been breaking 90 everytime though so I think my consistency is getting a little better but I would definitely have to have one of my good rounds to get there. I did walk the course that I would be trying it on and saw some differences on some holes and other holes just didnt change that much. Will be interested to see and I will probably start this week.

Absolutely agree with both the highlighted statements above. The one big thing I have to guard against when playing well is getting ahead of myself. For ANY round, playing it one shot at a time is key.

I know that my conservative score will be better, since when I 'go for it', im going to be driving greens and losing accuracy on a short course. When I play my regular game, I score better. Im a big strategist in everything I do, and I play better golf when I think my way around the course.

I have played the forward tees before, and I shot really low. Laser wedge shots put me in scoring position more often than im used to.

Since we play together on the same course and shoot very similar scores I am going to go with the same predictions but for S & G's I have posted again anyway.  Maybe we should just throw down a skins match while working out these results?  Keeping our stroke by stroke scores as well of course.

    • Not really, no. I don't know the history, what you've worked on, what you've tried and moved away from… etc.
    • Day 9: 2/16/25 Putting through 50 mm gates from 11”. Swing pressure shift drills.
    • Definitely not a favorite… For some reason my wife and I started watching Cobra Kai. I know the original was pretty cheesy, but the inability of these people to get over shit that happened like 30 years ago is astounding. And these kids would be arrested, but they don’t even seem to get suspended from school. Would Danny not notice that Johnny’s son looks like Johnny? Etc.? Why would a completely different dojo that has the same name be “banned”? Oy. Not sure we’ll make it to season 2.
    • Day 139 - 2025-02-16 Weather led to a rescheduled GEARS lesson, so I used the time to work on my swing for 60 minutes or so. All downswing stuff. Some swings at 93 MPH. Most around 75-80.
    • A question I have is…this swing (fade, pull cut) does not  feel as good and easily repeatable as the draw swing we were working on previously.  I’m kinda in a weird spot where I do not know which direction will be the best to pursue. I like seeing a penetrating 5 yard draw but also like the thought of the fade not getting away from me as much.    Any thoughts on that?
