Interesting comments toward the end of today's CBS golf telecast:

Ian Baker-Finch: "Both (Tim Clark and Carl Pettersson) have said to me they won't be able to compete without them (long putters). So they're interested in what that decision will be."

David Feherty: "You believe that?"

Saying he called them liars is a big jump. First of all Feherty is rarely completely serious. I'm sure he's poking fun at them.

No.  he asked IB-F if he believes that TC and CP wouldn't be able to compete without long putters.  It is a right or wrong question, not a truth or lie question.  They are not the same thing.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Both good answers.

My reaction was of course they can "compete," even missing every cut and losing their playing cards. I think the question is really, will they be competitive. They indicated they don't think they will be, and they should be the best judge of that.

It sounded to me as if Feherty was saying they could be competitive but were just saying they could not to add to the discussion on whether the long putter rules should be changed. In that sense, he was calling them liars.

Tim Clark adds a special twist on the long putter debate. He has a congenital birth defect that does not allow him to rotate his hands and forearms normally. He contends that this defect makes it difficult for him to play with a standard putter.

And some people have congenital birth defects that prevent them from playing Major League Baseball. Bummer.

The guy can make a full swing, so he can putt.

You don't need to rotate your hands or forearms to putt.

No wonder he can't putt with a standard length putter.

Difficult but he can do it. People will say anything to maintain using their bread and butter. Let him keep it as long as he holds it away from his body.

The way I read Feherty's reply is one of respect for Clark & Petterson's talents. In other words, he's saying they're so good they can compete without having to use a broomstick.

I think the OP is attempting, for the sake of trying to make a thread "juicy,"  to add a characterization to what was said that was not implied.  I think the next words out of Feherty's mouth, that he left unsaid, were "Those two could win Ryder Cup matches putting with a 15" drinking straw/24" fireplace poker/20" shoehorn" (take your pick).
