i'm really considering ditching an outdated 3, 5, and 7 wood and adding a 20 hybrid and 4 wood to the bag.  but, i have a 56 degree wedge that suits all my needs.  i really can't see any reason that i would buy another wedge until i get a lot better (read: <10 handicap). right now i can maneuver my 56 to do just about anything.  hell, it cooked me a steak the other day.

obviously that setup would leave me with only 12 clubs.  i'm just curious if anyone else has done this before.

I suspect many are or have. Currently I have 12 clubs in the bag but I went the other way, more wedges, less long clubs.

I'm at 12 right now, but pretty certain that a 60 degree wedge is next (likely will just hit the used stores)

and probably either a chipper or a 50 degree (haven't decided - but I can chip with a 8/7i, but that 20 yard gap in distance between my PW(46) and SW(54) seems to come into play once in a while.)

that'll make it 14

I've gotten new everything this year except my 20 year old SW(54) - it's funny that I hit that probably more than any other club (sans putter) and I like it a LOT.

I'm happy with the span and mix of my long clubs.  the only option might be swapping the 4/5i's someday with hybrids, but that's a long ways out - I can hit those decently already, but I'm so happy with my fairway woods that it's leading me to think that the hybrid concept might be something I'd be drawn to someday.

I have 11 clubs at the moment. 3i-PW, SW, Driver and a putter.  My 3 and 4 irons are actually Callaway i-brids - so I don't really see the need to add a hybrid at the moment.  This winter I will buy a 50 degree wedge and a 3w and 5w - giving me all 14 clubs.

I can't imagine a scenario where having less than 14 clubs is better than having 14 clubs.

Leaving my 3-wood, 4, 5, 6, 9 iron, and LW at home home I could carry my really small golf bag 36 holes instead of the bigger one for 18.

1. anser driver (260y)

2. anser 3/4w (240y/230y)

3. anser 3h (220y)

4-11. i20 4-PW, GW (205y-110y)

12. vokey 56 (90y)

Do you not carry a putter?

You don't have much room once you put your putter in.

I have to carry my clubs through subway/bus, commuter rail and cabs half the time I play and I carry when I play. As a metropolis dweller, you get good at lightening your load doing many things you take for granted when you have a car. A couple of times, car service was so busy, I opted to walk from the course to the station (1+ mile) so I could catch the train. I was glad I had fewer than 14 clubs. My back was glad it was carrying only 12 clubs.

I've been playing two sets for years.

One is 12 clubs: 3-9I, PW, SW, 3W, Dr, putter, the other has an additional club, a gap wedge.

When I started playing I carried a 3,5,7,9 and a 2 Wood (which was really wood & steel shaft), and a putter in a Sunday bag.  You learn some interesting shots when you don't have so many clubs. But these days I have a full bag.

3, 5, 7, 9, putter, and 3-wood. The 9-iron flop shot is a lost art.

Well, add a putter. And if you can hit a 3W 240, you should change the configuration of the longer clubs. Say, 3W-5W-3 or 4h. That will allow you to start your irons at 5 and also add another wedge. You can never have enough wedges. I have W, GW. SW and I interchange a 58/60 depending on the conditions of the course I am playing. If it is hard with tight lies, I leave the 60 at home. My 58 has less bounce and I sometimes use that more in the sand than the traditional SW (56).

I carry 11 and while I would put more wedges in(a 50 to be specific) I'd still only be at 12.

What are the yardage gaps between your driver, 3h and 5 iron?

220 on average with the hybrid(if I flush one its about 230)

210 on a perfect 5i...205 normally.

so roughly about a 15 yard gap...and from those distances 15 yards isn't gonna make me or break me.

just saw you asked about driver, too..

Driver average is around 250 ish...the majority of my "I hit that one well" drives get out to about 260 and my "that was ok" drives go from 240-250 not counting any natural aids like wind or anything.

So we'll call it D-Hybrid = 20 yds

Hybrid-5i = 15 yards.
