How do you keep score? Scorecard or smartphone? Or both? Or something else?

Keeping score with a smartphone seems like killing an ant with a sledgehammer. I can take out the pencil & write '4' on the card easier than any other method.

And yet with a smartphone you don't have to worry about having a pencil or a scorecard. And the round can automatically sync with Scorecard or another app or website. And you don't have to add anything up at the end. And so on. :)

I'm not technology-avoidant. I love my smartphone. I think the apps that can give you distances are pretty cool. I just think using them to keep score is a bit much. But that's me.

I like using the smartphone for tracking 1st putt distance. If I use paper I then have to go back and remember the 1st putt distance. Which I often get wrong.

Yes, it is.

People tend to take a response that's "your method is stupid" not as well as you  might think. I should know. I still screw that up all the time. Better to just say what's good about your method and move on. Now if I can only remember to do that myself... ;)

I guess I'm still old school. Something about pulling the card out of the back pocket & writing it down...or writing it on the steering wheel of the golf cart.

I can get with using technology for things that can't be done otherwise. I don't need it to write a number down on a card.

This is me too.  I love technology for what it's made for (heck, I'm on a bit of  a hot rod laptop right now).  However, the day that I'm too lazy to add up 18 single digit numbers after a round is the day I want them to shovel the dirt over me.

That's precisely the problem: it's not even a little bit about being lazy. Not for me, anyway, and probably not for many others who say "smartphone."

And I'm playing devil's advocate here too, a bit. I use both methods, depending on whim or whether my pencil happens to have a point on it or whatever else.

I use both.  I like using the scorecard for nostalgic reasons, but love the ease of tracking stats on the smartphone.

I keep everything in my head and then transfer it to my iPhone right after the round. I use the Scorecard app so I can sync it to my computer when I get a chance. Of course tournament and money rounds often necessitate the use of a scorecard, but I am terrible about keeping them.

I heard about this site while listening to PGA Tour channel on XM yesterday, shotbyshot.com which tracks all of your shots and provides feedback on your strengths and weaknesses.  Anyone use it, is it worth the $59 annual fee?

I use my Skycaddie - in addition to score it is the easiest way to track putts, fairways and driving distance (along with GIRs being taken care of automatically)

I've used the GolfShot app on my iPhone all season, and it's been great. It's been very accurate for yardages and keeping track of my stats.

I can appreciate the romanticism behind sticking with pencil and scorecards, but I don't think there is a more efficient way of keeping track of my HCP, GIRs, sand saves, etc. To each their own...

I'm a techie person, but I use a pencil and scorecard not for any romanticism but because I've found it is the simplest and most efficient.   I don't have to turn on a device, have difficulty reading it in bright sunlight, etc.     It only takes me a second or two to jot down the score and put a few dots on the card indicating important stats.   And I've never yet had a battery in the pencil go dead when playing two rounds in one day.

As a person who sometimes does both, I know that at least for me it's more efficient using a smartphone...especially if tracking multiple stats.  If only tracking strokes, it may be different.  Either way, one method being faster than another based on anecdotal usage cases is somewhat negligible.  Even though it takes me 2-10 more seconds to do it by pencil/scorecard, that isn't the deal-breaker for me.

The real reason why I do it is because I can upload the data online immediately after the round--before I get to the clubhouse even--and know that it is compiled in a central database.  As opposed to scorecards, which I would have to take home with me and store myself, and compile the data later.
