MJ banned from Miami Club for Cargo Shorts

I know the cargo shorts debate is old but I thought this was worth posting anyway. And some say banning the belly putter hurts the growth of the game..........

NBA legend and pro-am regular Michael Jordan caused a stir at an upscale Miami golf club when he refused to adhere to the club's dress code.

According to a report by the New York Post's Page Six , Jordan was made aware on the 12th hole that his cargo shorts violated club rules after members at La Gorce Country Club complained about Jordan's attire. Jordan declined an offer to go back the clubhouse and change, and a club source says Jordan won't be invited back.

Page Six confirmed the report with a rep for Jordan:

“Michael Jordan did wear cargo pants . . . He had been there many times before and had worn cargo pants previously, and had never been made aware that he was violating any dress code. This time, he was made aware of the violation on the 12th hole, and at that point . . . he did refuse to interrupt his game, and return to the clubhouse and change. We were not aware that he is not allowed to return to La Gorce. I guess it’s their loss — as MJ is a great golfer, and a great guest."

I doubt it went down as nicely as they claim.  I think he looks fine in the shorts, but rules are rules.  I'm surprised someone would have the nerve to call out MJ, my guess is they didn't know who he was when they made the complaint.

To each his own.  I, personally do not mind the cargo shorts ... what I don't like is the cigar.

If I wanted to be realllllllly picky, I guess I'd say I'd prefer if the shorts were not quite as long and baggy, but again, I'm being real picky here.  He looks fine to me (except the cigar).

I don't have a problem with cargo shorts but I wouldn't wear those. Mostly because it's a young guy look, the big and baggy wanksta thing. Just doesn't look right on a middle aged millionaire.

This is why I'll never go pro, you can't wear shorts.  Even if it is cold outside, I'll just wear a long sleeve shirt under my golf shirt.  I can never play sports in pants.

First, how many 6'6" guys are regularly playing golf? And when you see a 6'6" guy (or larger) playing golf - especially if they are physical specimen - I'm asking my buddies what professional athlete that is.  I find it hard to believe they didn't know who he was. Especially as recognizable as MJ is.

Second, I'm guessing they were probably just being a hard ass (whomever bitched about it)... And the club decided basically it prevents the upset paying members from going, 'Hey - why does this guy get to bend the rules - and not me or my guest?' kind of thing from getting out.

Agreed.

However, I also wouldn't care if one person on my course was wearing them.  They are slightly too long perhaps, and slightly too baggy perhaps, but I wouldn't get my flat front dockers in a bunch over it.

Now, if his shirts untucked, and his pants are low so you see his boxers, well that's something altogether different.

lol, no that is Bruce Bowen of the San Antonio Spurs.  Went to a pro-am at the AT&T; Championship, he is famous for wearing the Bow Tie.  It was like 85-90 that day, and he was still wearing pants, long sleeve shirt, and bow tie.

Where I golf that would be considered overdressed. I was at the course earlier and there was a guy in front of me wearing a cowboy hat and jeans. Not sure if he had boots on but he had a good looking swing.

Back to MJ though... Why does he button his golf shirt to the brim - then wear black cargo shorts with a white belt?

Button to the brim is more of a formal preppy look - which doesn't bode well with cargo shorts.  Then to cap it off with a white belt?  LOL

Fashion Police please chime in...

It is a strange look. Seems real weird considering when Ahmad Rashad was hosting Morning Drive a few weeks ago more than once he commented about MJ buying loads of spiffy duds at the clubs they frequent. If AR is to be believed MJ has a fondness for fine cashmere.

    • Couple things to update First on the clubs/ball. I switched golf balls to the Left Dash ProV1x. It seems like a great fit for me. I always need lower spin off the tee, it's about a half club longer into greens, and still gives me enough spin with chips and pitches to hit whatever shot I need. The durability is insane too, played 35 holes with one over my last two rounds and it still looked brand new until I lost it. Hybrid is no longer. Couldn’t quite get a consistent strike and the random snap hook left was always lurking as soon as the strike drifted out towards the toe. I know it was me not the club but I couldn’t stand the lefts anymore. Titliest fitting guy came to our club a few days ago and I had been curious about the T200 3iron. I hit a few with it and the stock HZRDUS graphite shaft, it wasn’t bad at all but I could definitely tell when I mishit it. Then the fitter had me try the U505 3iron. When he asked if I was open to trying it I said something like “Isn’t that the game improvement one?” and he said “Just trust me and hit a few with it”. Within 5 swings I was sold. Suddenly it didn’t look as big and chunky when I started hitting rocket after rocket. It did every single thing I want a 3 iron to do. It flies very high, forgiving, can hit it off the tee and ground, can flight it low when needed, and best of all, it doesn’t go left. He had me try to snap hook one left and it resulted in a nice tight draw, nowhere close to a hook. Tried it with the stock shaft and their upgraded one, ended up hitting it the best with the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ-95. Ended up getting a great deal on a used one that arrived yesterday so going to go measure my numbers with it today at the range. I expect to be using this a lot for 2nd shots into par 5s, being that 230-250 club. Hit some on the Mevo+ yesterday and the distance is exactly what I needed.     From a playing perspective, been playing pretty solid so far this season, driving and putting have been solid overall, approach shots have been good for the most part and short game wasn't great to start the year but it's been getting better lately with some more dedicated practice. Compared to scratch over 7 rounds:
    • so with the driver. Feel more arm  width at A4. keep an in the eye on the ball. The first move from the top is lowering the hands down. Don’t mix that up with looking up at the target as the club comes down from A4 with the body. Feel like I get width with the arms from the chest in the Downswing.

    • Went back and reviewed my rounds this year at my home course to fill out the spreadsheet. Realized I have made at least par on each hole but two that I have bogied. At my skill level, it gives me a new confidence that I can play each hole decently well and strong together a lower score. Great mental boost.
    • I'm at 330 I think. I have a spreadsheet with all of them in it. It helps having lived in two countries. 159 in the US and 136 in the UK. Then a handful in Europe and a few in other countries (Canada, Australia, Mexico).
