A year ago at this time Yani Tseng's lead as the world's #1 player was so large, it appeared it would be a number of years before anyone could possibly catch her. No one could possibly have predicted she would lose it this quickly. Not that Yani didn't have a great run. She did spend 109 weeks at the top, but her inability to find the winner's circle while Stacy has won 6 more times, has led to an unlikely turnaround.

Yani will drop even further.

Her game will highly likely to become even worse.

Her swing change is the culprit of that.

Her timing is now worse, consistency will be hard to conjure up on a steadly basis.

Her 2013 as far is horrible, 19 shots after stacy.

What a way to get there after that 2 stroke penalty, some great golf on Sun. Congrats Stacy.

I felt bad for Ai Myazato on that approach shot.  Bad mistake.  But Stacy was closing in as well.  The birdie on the same hole really finished it.  Her putting was great, but every tee shot was down the middle.  She deserves to be number 1.

Everyone seems to be pointing to Ai's mistake on 16 as the reason Stacy won. Let's not forget that Stacy shot a 64, and probably would have won even if Ai had parred 16.

I didn't realize she had shot so low in the final round. Very impressive.

The LPGA has an interesting dynamic. A player becomes dominant for a few years and falls off. Annika retired, Lorena retired, Yani has lost her way now Stacy is easily the LPGA's best player.

Ai has an interesting backswing, seems really slow and appears to really wind her core tight.  Stacy was focused the entire round, once she caught up to Ai, I knew she'd win.

Who is working with Yani on her swing now?  I don't watch the LPGA, but find it interesting that she can be so dominant... Then struggle like she is.

She was with Gary Gilchrist, not sure if she still is. Hopefully if she is, she is thinking hard about making a change very soon before she goes too far down the wrong path.

Funny, I had never heard of this guy before you mentioned him yesterday.  Then last night I saw a commercial on TGC for the "Gilchrist Academy" or something along those lines.  Color me amused.

wont matter what she does, Gary had her move her timing so its really hard for her to be consistent.

she wont dominate as long she sticks with him.

I think he is from the Leadbetter camp, so not a big surprise that he has an academy now. When Yani was winning everything he was big so during that time he likely went out and set all of this up. Now that she is struggling his name is not so regularly attached to her.

Erik, you need to update Stacy

In the press conference, Geoff Shakelford asked her to explain the more technical side of her approach on the greens without divulging too many secrets. Her answer:

Quote:
STACY LEWIS:  Yep.  Well, it's Aimpoint and everybody can go take a class and learn it, so I guess it's not too much of a secret.  But I learned it, gosh it's been almost three years, two and a half, three years.  It's really based on gravity and how water flows off of a green.  So every time I walk up to a whole, I'm trying to find a straight putt, and once you find a straight putt, it's how much slope there ‑‑ what affects the read is how much slope is there and then how far away you are from the straight putt.  So the further you get from the straight putt, the more it's going to break.  So it's a combination of that and you have a little chart that gives you the exact read for every single putt.  So it's really, it's almost like cheating.  I can walk around and have down to the inch how far every putt's going to break.  So I can ‑‑ and that's the thing, too, is you're walking around, you're feeling it with your feet versus looking at it, and that's kind of the big difference because a lot of times golf courses try to throw you off visually with mounds or hills or whatever it may be on how putts break.

Ever since I found out she aimpoints (its a verb too, right? ) I've been watching her to try and see how she does it.  But usually she kind of looks just like she is reading the green normally.  Then again, they don't show a whole lot of players reading greens anyway, so there's not much to go on.

I remember somewhere, either during our class or on a thread here, seeing a picture of a green mapped out with slope directions and percentages quite thoroughly.  Do you think that she has a yardage book that has basically mapped that all out ahead of time such that there's not a lot of reading necessary during the round, or what?

I'm also surprised Mark has not managed to get his logo somewhere on her shirt.  I don't think it would take much for Aimpoint to become "all the rage" and get a GD cover story, get commercials on TGC, get everybody talking about it and wanting to use it.

Maybe he can even talk Michael Lewis about writing a book about him.  (Then he could even get Brad Pitt to play him in the movie)

Putting is easy.

Most people cant read a green so for those aimpoint can be an aid but a lot also makes it a limit.

you can have perfect zero degree putting stroke like some Pro´s still dont make putts.

Once your skill is good enough you shouldnt miss much within 15 feet.

PGA Tour make percentage from 15 feet is around 20%. If you're automatic from there on in your user name should be multiple_majorwinner.

Nope, sorry, that's not factually correct. Only 1 PGA Tour professional has made more than 50% of putts from 10-15 feet this year. Tiger has made exactly 1/3rd: http://www.pgatour.com/content/pgatour/stats/stat.405.html

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
