Anybody have any tips on how to clean hats?  I have a "white" golf hat that is basically yellow now and I'm about to throw it away.  But before I do, I'm just curious if there is an easy way to clean it.  Stick it in the washing machine?  The dishwasher?  Hand wash?  Anything??

Thanks!

I put mine in the dishwasher, but I tend to stay away from white hats so I'm not sure how to get discoloration. Maybe dishwasher and then hand wash with bleach?

OK, cool.  Do you have one of those plastic thingies to keep the shape of the hat?  Do they tend to shrink at all?

I just toss 'em in the wash machine.  No problems with shrinking.

Not sure you'll ever get out real bad yellowing though.....

Yeah, I have the plastic things. I've never had any shrink noticeably.

I do the same, but it does wear and fade the color of the hat pretty bad.

I have tons of hats, and wear all white hats often (see avatar). I toss mine in the washing machine with Tide, Bleach and OxyClean (RIP Billy Mays) on hot water setting. They always come out pretty clean. My fitted hats do seem to shrink slightly, but they are usually a little too big to begin with. They are the flex fit so a slight shrinking (on hats) is not an issue.

I use the plastic things, but I sweat pretty bad so there is always a slight discoloration no matter what the color and the damn hats never keep their shape fully after one wash.

I am only buying Loudmouth painters caps now because they do not really need to keep their form.

I have a dark navy blue hat that I destroyed with my mutant sweat on the very first day I wore it. Parts of it turned brown LOL, sucks because it was/is a great hat. Tried the dishwasher and regular washing machine, still looks disgusting.

I have the White Titleist Mesh hats. I put mine in the dishwasher after a few rounds. They come out looking brand new. My nephew couldnt tell the old freshly washed from the new one I had just bought him. The other colors will fade so white is the best for washing.

In the summer, I take the offending hat into the shower with me and try to get the sweat out before it dries in and sets. This gets some more life out of them. Once they get yellowed, I have never seen a cure so I only wear white hats in the winter.

I do this as well.  For my white hats, I just scrub it with body wash and rinse.  I let it hang dry.  If you rinse the hat right away, the yellowing won't happen as much.  I've done this with Nike and Mizuno white hats that are moisture wicking (I sweat a lot).  I also rinse my Red Sox hat and have had no issues and it is part wool.  Love that hat.  It has been with me on five continents!  i just need Africa and Antarctica to complete the set.

I just throw mine in the washing machine.  Just make sure that you let them air dry or else they will shrink.

You dishwasher guys...do you put them in there by themselves, or do you throw them in with the dirty dishes and some detergent?

No dirty dishes but do add detergent.  Place them in the top rack

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
