Bomb Tech Grenade Driver

The first generation Cobra Baffler IIRC. I also seem to remember someone posting pics of an old persimmon FW that had a distinctive "boat hull" design.

There have been more recent ones. TM Raylor hybrid and Nike Dymo fairways just off the top of my head. It doesn't look like the BombTech fairway wood is a boat hull shape, but I don't see why it would have to be. Most fairway woods aren't shaped like that.

I purchased one figuring no one would steal it at the bag drop. I have six different drivers that I rotate to occasionally, TM, Mizuno, Adams, Callaway and Yonex. Overall, to me, a driver is a driver is a driver. Just the cosmetics and the hype are different. Just think. With TM's an extra 20 yards with each driver release, you can now pound it 600 yards.

Just check out TM's website, no were does it say you gain 20 yards off the driver. Just saying.

They did state the RBZ 3W would gain 17 yards a couple years ago.

OK perhaps "17 more" meant inches, and "longer", "longest ever", mean either 1/8th inch increments in distance or maybe they're talking about shaft length. "Farther" what, 6 inches? Or? Anyway, of all the drivers I listed, my "longest" is a Mizuno MX560. All I would say are within 5 to 10 yards of one another with the same strike. Including Bombtech's Grenade. A lot of distance depends on roll. Really comes down to launch angle/loft, spin, and sweet spot strike with a tad of draw roll. Working on these with an adjustable driver probably has its merits.

That's the point right, its all about the mishits. It is getting to the point were now it isn't about how hot the face is. You can't make a golf club hit the ball farther on centered hits with pure ball speed alone. The USGA has capped that. What advancements have done is widened that capped area across the clubface. Now with moving the CG, they are optimizing launch conditions. So now you'll get more yards because you are fitted better. Why not have a club that works better for thin shots? If you are a really good golfer and that one slightly thin shot doesn't cost you as much. That one stroke advantage could make or break a tournament.

Well I have been searching the web for as many reviews and information on Bombtech as I could find, and the common denominator in all my findings is that this is one great driver.  I just completed the online fitting and Sully contacted me right away with my suggested club.  It sounds like Sully is very passionate about the club and the game of golf in general.  This reminds me a lot of what David Edel's philosophy was before they became a little more well known.  I went in to local club fitter five years ago with no intention to get a new putter, but after walking out the door that was the club I was most excited about.  A lot of people gave me funny looks when I told them I bought a $330 putter from a company that no one really knew, but all that mattered to me was the club performed as advertised and better than anything that the big OEMs had to offer.  After five years, I can say that the Edel hasn't left my bag, and my friends keep spending big bucks on putters to find the one.

Sully seems like an engineer passionate about the game with one main goal:  to make a club that is simply better than anything on the market.  I hope I am right about this one because I am ready to pull the pin and give this thing a try.

Only problem is that there are out of left-handed heads at the moment.  Hopefully by the time the snow thaws I will have one of these big sticks in my hand, and I will let everyone know what I think.

I've been looking at this club for a long time and I just can't seem to pull the trigger (pin?) on it. My concern is finding the right fit in terms of launch/spin numbers, etc. My current driver no longer fits my swing, so I know very well how damaging a poorly fit driver can be.

I plan to do a Trackman fitting this year, do I take the results from that and try to work them in wit the Grenade, or do I just go with the head and shaft combination the clubfitter recommends? There's a serious apprehension about spending a good amount of money on a club, sight unseen, that I just can't quite get over.

They do guarantee their drivers, but it's a replacement with a new fit, which seems pretty reasonable. In the end, it's up to you.

One of the things I like is that I'd be able to get it shorter and try it out; I've always been interested in how I would do with a shorter driver. I asked a pro at a local store why the big name OEMs didn't let you demo anything shorter than the standard length (is it up to 46" now?) and he had no answer. On the flip side, I could get the fitting and the fitter could recommend a $600 driver setup... then I'd probably just get the grenade.

After consulting with my financial advisor (the wife), I decided to pull the pin. I just couldn't justify spending the additional money on an independent clubfitter, so I'm rolling the dice a bit. I ordered the Grenade in a stiff shaft, 44.5" long. When it gets here, I'll take it, along with my old driver, to a store and compare them with some of the latest off the rack offerings and do a poor man's fitting for myself. I'll let you guys know the results.

Definitely do.  I have only used mine a couple times so far at the range and have played one round with it.  I was at the range last week with it and it was 16-17 degrees out and I was hitting it as far and as accurate as I hit my Anser driver in last summer temps.  I could not believe it.  I can't wait to try it more when it gets warm.  I am interested to see how it compares to the overly lengthened OEM drivers, at the shorter length of 44.5 for you.  I would wager it will be just as long and more accurate.  Mine is 44.75(I cut a bit off) and I think the standard length from them is 45.5.  So far I have been very impressed with mine.

I was wondering what length of shaft I should get on mine. Sully suggested a stiff shaft at 45.5 there standard length, but I am tempted to try 44.5. Any thoughts or good articles on driver length? I think I heard somewhere that most amateurs should not be using the longer shafts ( example 46+") because of how erratic their drives become unless they have a very solid and repeatable swing? My only question is would a stiff shaft be stiffer if it is 44 vs. 45 inches, or does that only matter when you are cutting down a shaft?

As far as I understand yes the shaft does feel more stiff the shorter it is. I ordered the 45.5 and have cut it down to 44.75. I wanted to try the longer(standard) length out. I hit it fine but the club just felt too long for me. You can always cut it down from a longer length of you need to. Sully uses pure grips bit he also uses tape instead of air. Bad sully! ;). Had to replace my grip. So, don't use the pure grips air tool to take off his grips.

    • Let us be clear, unless you have proof of cheating, you just sound like a case of sour grapes.  In our club we have a guy who won club titles for many years.  Yes, he was a low single digit handicapper, but there have been quite a few others who played at his level.  Yet his mental strength and experience helped him win in many years when he shouldn't have.  Did he sandbag.  DEFINITELY NOT.  Did he just minimize his mistakes and pull out shots as and when needed.  Definitely.
    • Day 111 - Worked on my grip and higher hands in the backswing. Full swings with the PRGR. 
    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.  
    • I would think that 3 in a row with the same players might get some behind the scenes examination from the SCGA if they were suspect.  Are there any clubs questioning the results?
    • What simple fact? A golf match is not a coin flip — there is a fact for you. I'm trying to help you, and you're throwing out what could easily be called sour grapes. Come with FACTS, not weak analogies. Then you've got nothing. Hopefully they've done a better job of making their case. 😛
