I used to play winter golf on the weekends all winter if there wasn't snow on the ground.  I have my own cart cover which makes a big difference.   I preach the benefits of playing early during warm summer months, but it's not possible in the winter. I normally play winter-golf late morning to give frost a chance to thaw,  and the frigid early morning temps a chance to moderate.

My son started bowling about 18 months ago, and this put an end to winter golf.   The little dude and I will bowl from noon-4/5pm!  We usually bowl at least 15 game each...LOL   22 games each is our record.... I put bowling first because it's quality father/son time.  Sooner or later, he'll ditch his old man and I'll have the rest of my life to play golf in the winter.  For now.....I bowl.  LOL

With today being Black Friday, we're going bowling today ;-)

Well, my girlfriend said that I'm getting a golfing net for Christmas from her parents which I'm somewhat uncomfortable with but I've decided this is going to be an opportunity to put it in the back yard and really practice making consistent contact and using the mirror indoors to practice my swing in slow motion.

I also expect to practice chipping and pitching but that will likely be secondary.

I'll also practice putting indoors on the carpet but that's also on the secondary level.

I also plan on keeping playing until I can't.  Played when it was 26* this morning and didn't really bother me much at all.  I have a friend who is crazy enough to do it with me, so, should be good to go...unless is snows.

Wow, was I way off with my previous comment about your getting new irons. Seems like you would have ample opportunity to use them. :-)

I play as far into the golf season as the weather allows.  That may mean some partially frozen turf conditions.  As long as there is not much snow cover and the temperatures are above 32 degrees I will consider playing.  Once the snow cover becomes permanent, I will re-grip my clubs, clean and re-spike my shoes, cleanout the golf bag and generally take inventory in the golf corner of my basement.  Take a long weekend trip to FL or TX and drag along the sticks.  Watch some golf on TV (maybe starting with the Crosby/AT&T;).  Walk the local course in the snow with my wife for exercise.  Workout.  Work on my golf scrap book; this will be a banner year what with all the St. Andrews photos and stuff to catalogue.  Look at my golf scrap book.  Build a snowman and place a golf club in his "hands".  At some point the winter weather begins to break. I will hit the course before all the snow has melted and marvel at the fact that I survived another northern winter.

My home club just shut down the par 3, which would have been much more fitting for the winter. I've determined that 38 degrees is ok if there is minimal wind, so I'm sitting on the 10-day forecast for most of the winter.

Theres plenty to keep me entertained during the off-season.  Watching hockey, playing hockey at the local rink, March Madness, hitting up the local golf dome, golf simulator and putting practice on the living room carpet.

For me, the off-season is a nice time to recharge the batteries and prevent myself from getting burnt-out on golf.

Great opportunity to work on the putting stroke in the living room.

this ... plus i've incorporated chipping into the corner recliner when the wife's in the other room.   Hit a chip, then a putt - so it's more realistic & not just grooving each stroke.

Played in 33°F weather on black friday - cloudy & windy.    Pretty much as raw as it gets.     Not alot of fun, but it was better than sitting home watching golf channel.   Only thing is that I strained / pulled my shoulder - been struggling with that all weekend & Ben Gay'ing it up constantly.     I think it's my body telling me to relax, I've played over 100 rounds this year - need to recover, so the time off will be a good thing (still tough to not go).    Cold weather golf is way more injury prone - so be careful out there ...

Haha, yup.  This Saturday it's supposed to be in the 30's so it will be a bit better.

I'm ready to go until it snows!

  • 3 weeks later...

Honestly this year I welcome the break. I still practice daily at home but I'm not jonesing to get out on the course. It's been 50's-60's this week and I haven't felt the need. I'm sure I'll get out soon but it has to be the right day. Course conditions are bad enough already that I can live without it. I plan to take it easy through the holidays and start hitting the gym harder in Jan to prep for spring.

Hoping to get out this weekend, suppose to be in the high 50's on Saturday and high 60's on Sunday!!! I'm thinking driving range on Saturday and running over to the home course on Sunday for 18. Bonus (for me) is the Eagles don't play until Sunday night so can still get out mid-day and not miss the game, only downside is I will have to put off Christmas shopping for another day but its not like this will be the first year I find myself scrambling at the mall on Christmas Eve.

Just made a tee time for tomorrow morning here in Raleigh. I don't live here but business is concluded today and I'll leave tomorrow afternoon after the golf. Going to be sunny and 70.

Why do they call golf "golf"?  Because all the other four letter words were taken.

    • No, I'm not talking about "six footers uphill, slightly right to left." I'm going to indulge myself and talk about my favorite putts that I've ever hit. In no particular order… #9 at Whispering Woods The hole was cut middle left, and I was back right with about 40 feet to the hole, and six to eight feet of break. @DrizZzY (he'll be a semi-common theme here) was about 25' from the hole and he said "Do you need me to mark that" as his ball was really close to my line. I saw the line really, really clearly and, like the cocky jerk I am, said something like "no, leave it. I think I have to just miss your ball to make this." I saw my ball as having to pass within a few millimeters of his ball… and going in the middle. Well, I hit the putt, and as it passed his ball missing it by maybe 1.5cm… I said "ahhhhh, pulled it a little…" and… the ball fell in the left-center of the hole. I smirked at Sculley and he just said "you're such an ass." 🤣 I know I said in no particular order, and that might be true for the rest… but this one is clearly tops on my list. I saw the line so clearly, it was a touchy, delicate putt… and I knew I'd pulled it just that little bit, and my speed was perfect. His ball was fifteen feet from mine, and the putt broke 8'! Might be the greatest putt, given the call I made, I'll ever hit. #13 at Lawsonia Links I cared about a few rounds in Wisconsin on our 2021 trip (thanks again @cipher), and the 13th had gotten me a bit. I was in a bunker, and someone not NOT named @DeadMan had told me I could just chip a 7I out and still be fine… well, the 7I left me 250 in, so my 3W finished just left of the green… and about 10' below the green. I hit a decent pitch to 25' or so… this putt broke only about 2-3', but burying that one was satisfying as it kept my "no sixes in Wisconsin" streak alive. It was after this putt that someone said something like "You remember how you said you felt about Tiger at the 1997 Masters? That's how we feel right about now." It was one of the nicest things anyone has ever said to me. 😄 #14 at Whispering Woods Two putts are tied here. On one, Sculley and I hit tee shots to a back hole near the front of the green. I was a foot off the front, he was a few feet on. As we were getting back into the cart, I said "putting contest from here." He replied "Well, I lost." I made the 75-footer. The other time, the pin was front-left. I was mostly middle right, barely on the green, putting across it from about 65 feet. The putt broke a good ten feet. Sculley was short left of the hole, and for the last 20 feet of the putt, I looked at @DrizZzY and the face he made — disgust, annoyance, resignation — as the putt tracked directly toward and eventually into the hole was one of the funniest and most satisfying expressions I've ever seen on the golf course. I watched him, not my ball, for the last 15-20 feet of its roll. Sorry Sculley! #9 at Tan Tara Golf Course It was my 77th stroke in my second round of the PAT. It was a ten-footer, broke a few inches, and was destined for the bottom of the cup the instant I hit it, all to pass the PAT on the number in my first attempt. (Tan Tara is now Pendleton Creek.) #17 and 18 at The Old Course, St. Andrews On the 18th, I hit it to about four feet from about 40 yards out, up and over the Valley of Sin, from the fairway. I didn't even really consider chipping or pitching it, because who does that? Not there, not me. On #17, I had about a 15 or 18 footer, after playing a 6I from 180 that flew (on purpose) only about 90 yards, and took about 15 steps to run over humps and hollows before coming to a stop on the right portion of the hole. My caddie said "I see only one or two birdies a year on the Road Hole, so, well done." Lifetime scoring average on 17 at the Old: 3. I'll take that. Far Hole (#?), Putting Course at Streamsong Black @kpaulhus and I were screwing around. Calling out holes, and tee locations. I walked over to the fringe of the nearby green on the Black course… We putted from the fringe in case we scuffed the ground a bit. Well, I chose a putt from the fringe to the far side of the 18-hole putting course. In Google Earth, I measured the putt just now at nearly 400 feet. As in… 130 yards. I hit the stick. My ball stopped less than two feet from the hole. The other diners let out a loud shout when I smacked it, and looked way over at me and yelled out "it hit the stick!" Kyle lost that hole. And most of the other ones. 😉  Some stats: Count: 8 Shortest: 10 feet. Longest: 130 yards. Average length: ~93 feet. But, y'know… Those are my favorite putts. What are yours?
    • I have one still sitting in a box my son gave me for Christmas.  For a while, I used an app on my watch, but it drained the phone battery . We have Markers at 180 ,135 and 90M , and generally I am close enough to one of them to get a fairly rough indication of how far.  Also, for a while now ,I walk into town and back at weekends, approximately 5 mile round-trip . I’ll start a walk on my watch, and on the way home when the watch ticks over to .10/.90 etc I’ll pick a street light ,lamp post , sign , and guess how far, normally anything up to about 100 m, I have now got very good at estimating distances, especially up to 50 or 60M.
    • Day 295: mirror work for a while. Worked on turning the hips more.
    • Day 19: Lesson first thing this morning. I have a minor setup thing to work on, and then a new priority piece for hips. Really liked the way my hips and legs were working doing drills and slow swings in the lesson.  Got home from work, made dinner for family, and then attempted some practice of the new stuff, but being tired from work and a bit stiff from engaging different muscles in the golf lesson, it was a bit of a struggle so I stopped and will resume tomorrow evening after work.
