A bunch of courses are open in the Somerset area, but are price gouging .... they're all charging summer rates during the off season, as they presumably know people who live to the north will be traveling there to play.    I'm not buying what they're selling ... and will wait a few weeks for the reasonably priced PA courses to open ...

State Parks like Sunken Meadow will generally follow the same schedule. Montauk Downs would be at the same time as well. But I thought Bethpage kept one open year round- weather permitting, usually the Yellow or the Blue with temp greens? Maybe snow cover is an issue there and they need it to dry out a bit. No matter, in 10 days I'll be in Florida and I won't have to worry. By the time I get back, everyone around here should be up and running.

This year definitely a major exception... Sunken Meadow and Crab Meadow scheduled to be open to walkers Friday. Sunken Meadow was bone dry and borderline unplayable by late summer. Hoping that plays to advantage for early season rounds. At least till they start digging the new irrigation system...

Rutgers golf course opened this past weekend. I played Saturday, it was walking only. Everything was fairly soggy, greens were shaggy and still had aeration holes in them. Pretty much exactly what you'd expect a golf course would look like after the ice age finally ended. Of course, they are calling for snow again on Tuesday...

They are offering off season rates, so there's that.

Snow and a nor'easter is forecasted for Tuesday night into Wednesday here in NY.  About 4 inches of snow expected....shoot me.

Love that course, I was suppose to play there Sunday. When it's in shape the greens are simply excellent. Their pace of play policy is also second to none

I played Pelham Bay on Saturday and Douglaston on Sunday. Shot 110+ both days :/ my goal is to break 100 this year, thought getting an early start would be a good idea. Only 18 putts on the back 9 on Sunday, so I guess that's a step in the right direction.

Anyone know if Sunken Meadow on Long Island is open? Read Bethpage not until April.

Thanks

I made an account to respond because I know how frustrating it's been to find info about course openings on LI recently. My friend played Sunken Meadow this weekend, so at least the Red course was open, with some temporary greens being used. I went to the nearby Crab Meadow on Saturday to practice chipping and it was definitely open for 18, walking-only. Gull Haven in Islip is open as well. Dix Hills Park and Northport at the VA were both supposed to open today when I called both late last week. The range and practice area at Dix Hills were both open over the weekend, but I don't know about whether they opened the course when the weather got gorgeous on Saturday. I wouldn't be surprised if Northport decides to hold off opening on account of the upcoming snowstorm. Hope you found somewhere to play!

Yea, it's definitely one of the better courses in the area. Their pace of play policy is kind of a mixed bag, for me. On the one hand, I appreciate being able to play in a decent time no matter how busy the course is. On the other hand, I hate being rushed when the course isn't busy. It's especially embarrassing when my group is told we're behind pace, even though we are keeping up with the group in front of us. I mean seriously, if the group ahead is slow, what do you expect me to do about it? I like the policy more than I dislike it, though, so I keep playing there.

Thanks. Ended up just hitting balls at Hearland. Crab Meadow was hoping to allow carts this week, but who knows... Will try there Sat Am. Will also be trying Dix Hill Park if we can manage to get a weekday AM that's not frigid. Hit 'em straight. Pat

It appears that Black Bear in Sussex County is opening this weekend.  The rest of the Crystal Springs tracks look like they're opening 1st weekend in April.

Farmstead is opening this weekend too.    To the south, I heard Harkers Hollow openend last week.

    • Well, I have a 2 hybrid, 4 hybrid and then play 6 iron onwards.  My best clubs are probably the 4 hybrid and the PW.  What I find is that loft is your friend in general which is why my 4 hybrid is so much better than my 2 hybrid.  Definitely disproportionately more so than the 5 or so degrees of difference in loft.  If you have hybrids, play them.  And consider loft as your friend.  Invariably you will get up to a loft where anything less will not get you more distance because of your club head speed.  Essentially the faster you swing the less lofted a club you can hit effectively.  For me it is probably a 4 hybrid and maybe a 7 iron though I could improve both with practice
    • Off to my home state of Massachusetts this morning. 9 this afternoon,  18 tomorrow,  and 18 on Saturday. Hoping for some good scores but will be just happy playing with good friends.
