I carry a 50*, 54*, and 58* wedge setup. I hit the 54* around 95-100 with a full swing. The 60-70 yard shots always leaving me trying to decide between the sw and lw.  Usually go with the sw because the low bounce lw is a bit easier to screw up and hit a little fat or thin. Curious to hear what people tend to use in the range.

On a follow up note, if you don't use the lw for these short approaches, what's really the use of the club?  Thinking I might be better served with something in between my 3w and 3 hybrid instead.

From about 100 yes I use my pitching wedge initial about 60 yds when I choke down on my sand wedge and play a pitch shot! They come off most times and are low risk unlike the lob wedge which is quick easy to shank"

Depends. If it's in the fairway and an unguarded green, a half PW for me goes about 55 yards. A half 9-iron goes about 65, and I can hit half an 8-iron about 75, or I can hit most of a sand wedge that distance. Why require it to be a wedge when an easy shot with another club will do just fine?

Anything from about a 7-iron to a LW, depending on the factors.

Mind giving some examples? Anything from straightforward (little wind, even lie to a green at the same elevation), into elevated greens, etc.

If the pin is in the back and there's an upslope, it could be a 7I bump and run into the hill.

If the pin is tucked over a bunker, and I want to fly it just past the pin and have it stop quickly, a LW.

Some people I play with don't use a LW for anything more than a half-swing shot. But, they use it effectively inside 40 yds.

I had a 46* PW, along with your 50 - 54 - 58 setup for about a season and a half. Last summer I dumped the 54 and 58 for a high-bounce 56* SW. The 54 didn't always get me out of the trap cleanly, and I had distance control problems with the 58.

Also note that I'm 63 years old. I was hitting greenside cut shots with a SW for 20 years before the LW showed up.

These are exactly my thoughts.  The wind direction and pin placement are the key deciding factors.

Normally I would hit a partial 54 from that range. If its a special situation where I have no green to work with (tucked pin), then I will try to drop my 60 right on top of it.

LW or SW for me.

I hit a little shorter than most, so most of the times I use a 56* SW or a 50* wedge from that range, adjusting my swing for yardage and the lie.

Depends on the variables of the specific shot, but I generally play this with a 60 degree wedge. I adjust the length of my swing with the distance and try to not go after it in order to control spin.

It really depends on the pin position and what's around the green. I would hit anything from a 60* wedge to an 8 iron.

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
