Though i will say this, if i notice a change in attitude if i don't get a tip, like she thinks she deserves one, i will remember who she is and i will never tip her again. A tip is a luxury, extra to what i have to spend, its not part of the price. I remember a guy who delivered me a pizza, and i paid with my credit card online. He actually said did i forget something. That pissed me off, like you demand a tip. Thats not how it goes.

But yea, typically 1-2 bucks is my max.

No comment towards the original topic, as I rarely use the cart girls (if I do, I tip as I would a waitress-15-20%). But, I would caution a word of warning about tipping delivery guys; In my bachelor days, I lived with several pizza delivery guys, and a guy who worked at Domino's. They REMEMBER people(addresses) that don't tip. The repercussions for this lapse in judgement ranged from getting a cold pizza delivered extremely late, to receiving any number of "extra, unseen" ingredients placed on your pie (you can use your imagination...I'll spare you the disgusting details!).

While I never condoned the above behavior, the bottom line is I NEVER play around with people who handle my food. I tip them, and if I don't like the service, I never go back. I know some people will call BS, and say that no one would be so gross as to mess with someone's food, but believe that at your own risk...It happens..

Oh it happens. A friend of mine worked in a hotel for a year or two and he told me some stories that would make you throw up and then insist on cooking your own food for the rest of your life. People working in the service industry remember EVERY guest and how they act towards them. That's why I've never understood people that argue with and swear at people preparing your food!

This week I got a beer and a water for someone else. It was like 4.75 and all I had was 6$. I felt terrible. Especially since we play there twice a week or more.

I normally do a 1$ a drink or something around there.

I'm English, but live in Spain. The great thing about Europe, and this has been mentioned on here, is the paying customer is free to choose how much tip they want to leave. Nobody chases the customer out of the restaurant demanding their 20% tip. Don't they realize that all they are doing is guaranteeing the customer doesn't return to their restaurant? It makes sense to shut up, accept the 10% or whatever tip they've received and try to improve the service the next time around. At least, that's what I'd do.

The waitress, taxi driver etc. do not expect to receive a tip in Europe and it is considered a bonus if they get one. I think the difference here though is they are paid a decent salary which gets them to the end of the month. If they want to be grumpy they can, if they want to be a bit richer they can smile and do their best to make the customer's eating experience memorable.

You shouldn't feel terrible about that. Do you usually tip waitresses more than 26% when you eat out?

I consider cart girls to be in the same catagory as cocktail waitresses (or wait staff in a bar/bartenders).  When you go to a crowded bar (or golf course) you are in direct competition with all the other customers for the staff's attention.  The busier they are the less time they can take per customer.  It's just the way it is, but the savy customer knows that in such situations the first interaction you have with the staff you tip big.  The bigger that tip the more notice and attention you'll get from said staff.  That means as the staff are dealing with their customer/work load they'll take extra care to look out for you and make sure that anything you need is handled right away.  They do this because they know that spending that extra time on you and your party will be worth the effort, whereas most of their other customers will only be tipping them the usual amount.  The real purpose of the tip is to demonstrate to the staff which customers they need to give that extra amount of attention to so that you remain satisfied with your service and your expectations are met every time you frequent their establishment.  You do this right and whenever you go back to these places you notify your usual server when you get there so that they make sure to wait on you personally or they communicate with the other staff on duty the kind of service you expect (and will pay to recieve).

No, you didn't say that (just) the low ballers are lazy, you said that your customers are lazy.  What in your message do you think said that only th lowballers are lazy?  Is smeone who pays you more or tips you thereby NOT lazy in your eyes?

Grow up and be grateful that there are people who find it worth their while to have someone else do this kind of grunt work for them because they have better ways too spend their time and energy and the money with which to do so.  .They are the ones who make your job possible.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Dont take this the wrong way but most people in the service industry on our side of the water hate dealing with europeans. They are widely known over here for their lack of tipping. I realize that there are cultural differences but when in rome.........

I would feel terrible too. My tips no matter where I go start at 20% - if the service is bad they get the minimum 15%, more often than not I'll end up tipping closer to 40%.

No problem! I used to tip when I was in college in the US but that was a number of years ago now and my restaurant bills never came to much so throwing a few bucks on top was never an issue. Generally, the service was fantastic wherever I went (compared to service in Europe) and felt the staff deserved the tip. I just refuse to tip if the service is poor out of principle. If I have a particularly bad experience, I don't leave a tip and never return to the place.

I tip the beer cart girl everytime I buy something.  The practice (tipping them) here in the US is customary, so that's what I do.  When I go to a restaurant, I even tip when the service is poor.  However, if it is poor, I make sure I speak to the manager about it.  The only reason why I still tip is because in some places, the tips are split between the wait staff, busboys and even some of the kitchen crew.  So, I don't want to penalize them if my only gripe was with my waiter/waitress.

im glad i live in australia and don't have to tip, but why would i tip anyway if they earn minimum wage here ($20AUD which is like $22USD an hour)

people in the service industry here love americans cause they tip.. and they tip well :)

You know what a bad thing about europe is: You have to pay to sit down and eat in the restaurants. As an american it seemed nuts to pay a couple of euros to get bread and water at your table.  Of course I am still trying to figure out if I was a cheap stake tipper or overly generous in Italy. All the guide books gave conflicting advice.

I do like the countries that ad VAT/Sales tax to the advertised price.

True but cocktail waitresses aren't in the direct sun on 100 degree days hehe

so now you're going to imply that I'm poor or lesser than?  YOU are the kind of customer I don't have and don't want..like I owe you something for being so "gracious" :)

That's also something that's not consistent, some restaurants do it, some don't. You have to pay for the water if it is in a bottle, it is free if it is tap water. I also don't have a problem paying for bread, after all they have to buy the bread and make a profit on it. I am simply against giving a minimum 20% tip if the food, service etc. was poor.

Could not agree more! Folks, if you feel you got bad service, then nut up and complain to the server and/or the manager right there and then. The whole "Ooh I left 2.5% (or a penny -- or whatever), that'll teach them!" thing is passive-aggressive BS.

If you play there often I wouldn't worry about it. Servers know who tips and who doesn't and they also understand when a good tipper runs a bit short once in a while.

Usually the rule is double tax, in larger cities it's rises to 15% - 20%, but that assumes good service.  If you're not happy with the service speak to a manager and leave a tip that is fair to the others people involved that did provide you good service.  In most cases when I have complained about the service, the manager offered a reduction in the bill and if the staff split the tips I'd leave a good tip for the others to split without any additional cost to myself.
