I joined a month or so ago, but haven't posted very much...I like a lot of the posts/messages on here about people's particular games, etc...

I haven't played much golf at all in about 3 1/2 years(18 hole rds). The last 6 weeks or so, I have been going to the range hitting balls, putting and chipping. I used to be a decent golfer(got to a 7 hdc). I would play sometimes 3 days a week(prefer to play, than to practice), and almost always 1-2 times a week. Anyway, I don't have any swing video's of myself, but I believe my problems are my takeaway(really "handsy") and transition(to quick)....

So, I started placing two range empty ball sleeves between both my armpits, to stay more connected and do 1/2 swings....I also worked on getting my left shoulder involved with my takeaway and try to feel like it is going under my chin(so not to be "handsy")..this has really helped my ball flight to be more consistent. Would any of you(especially the mods) have any other "tips" for me? I tend to hook, pull hook and snap hook my balls(mostly with my driver and 3 wood, not so much Irons, one prob is over-swinging for sure, because I used to be able to crank up my swing speed to about 110-114). I don't want to play 18 till I'm waaaay more comfortable on the range. I used to shoot some good scores when I lived in the Sacramento, CA area and played a lot of good/tough courses from the tips. My driver right now is causing the most problems as well. Its really frustrating because I believe I would be a pretty high handicapper right now, and would have trouble breaking 90. I would like to start posting scores again and get another handicap here living in FL. Thanks for the responses(if I get some), and reading this long explanation!! :)

Start a My Swing thread. Giving tips without seeing video is a crap shoot at best. Oh, and welcome to the Trap!

This may lead to some real problems, but they are not really problems themselves.

I would just put the sleeve under the trailing arm with this drill.  But yes as @Ernest Jones is saying, get some video.  It is impossible to know what you are doing otherwise.

Ernest Jones, what do you mean; "start a my swing thread"? I know their are a lot of sub-forums on here, I though this was the best place to post about you're particular golf game. Thanks for the welcome!

On the "Practice Range" forum there is a subforum called "Member Swings."  Here's a link to the guidelines: http://thesandtrap.com/t/38240/my-swing-video-threads-rules-please-read/0_30

This forum is a great place for generalized instruction talk. Member Swings is great for individualized discussion.

I tend to hook, pull hook and snap hook my balls(mostly with my driver and 3 wood.

Mainly caused by weight hanging on back foot.

Shoulders and hands turn and swing without hip rotation, when weight is lagging.

Suggestion, when at a practice area / range, find a downslope and make a several practice swings with these clubs.

Feel the weight transfer to your left side if your a righty.

Use slow motion controlled practice swings on the downslope at first then progress to a controlled full swing.

You should feel a better weight transfer and have less snappy's

Good luck, Club Rat

Read Hogans Five Lessons. He used to hook his misses, until he became the master and simply stopped missing. ;) His principles will prob cure your hook... Most important being start the downswing with a hip turn, then shoulders, then arms, then hands.

Hogan's "fix" worked for him, doesn't mean it will necessarily work for someone else. Not all golfers that struggle with a hook are doing the same exact things. I suggest you take a look at the link provided above, the statement you made is basically incorrect.

    • The term I hear most often is "double teeing" which means the course/club has starting times from both the #1 and #10 tee.  I have encountered this many times and we know if we are the first group off #10, we may well get to #1 and have to wait because there are groups still with tee times yet to tee of #1.  In most instances, where the course/club has a starter, he normally explains this situation.  In this case, the pro advised what you would could/would encounter making the turn to #1.  And, that is exactly what happened.  Probably would have been wise to talk to the pro after playing back 9 and ask when you could go off #1 since apparently that club does not double tee.   Regardless, the outburst towards the other group was uncalled for.  And, I don't blame the member for being upset.  As a member of a private club, you are responsible for the actions of your guest.  I have played many times as a guest in the UK and I am pretty damn sure my host was responsible for my actions while at the club.  I know at the clubs I have belonged to here in the US, that is the way it is.  As a matter of fact, the member may find himself being brought before management and facing possible suspension.  So, I don't blame him for being upset.  However, as the host, he really should have stepped up and put a stop to the OP's actions.  OP makes this statement "I now understand that standards are different on the "private course." But I'll take those lessons to the muni, too."  No, the standards are not different.  You, sir, seem to be just a bit hard headed and belligerent, even if you are college professor...which possibly explains a lot.   JMHO
    • Day 32: worked for about 10 minutes on my drill. Filmed it as well for a check in. I think it’s slightly better but still seeing some issues.
    • Day 44 (26 Dec 25)  -  played in the Friday men’s shootout with a twist - used the Toney Penna persimmons and MacGregor blades - had a blast playing these clubs.  They really help in zoning in on making solid ball contact.  Scoring was solid - had several looks at birdie and had a few par saves.  Overall a day of focused course management.
    • Day 2: 2025.12.27 Eighteen holes at Kauri Cliffs. Focusing on trying to keep flex in right leg during backswing.
    • Day 136 12-26 Had a different practice planned today but life happened. Worked on "wide to wide" and still working on remaining flowy. Starting the club head in front of the ball as a drill, is helping with the flow of the swing.
