Well have not posted here lately, nothing to really talk about except I was getting worse instead of better.  This morning shot my best 9 holes - 47.  Knew it was going to be a good morning when I hit a good PW from 37 yards out to a elevated green (could only see the top of the flag stick).  Walked upto the green with my putter and could not believe the ball did not stay on the green and had rolled down the other side.  Walked across the green and did not see my ball.  I thought to myself no way, checked in the hole and there was my ball!!  Birdie to start out with.  Of course it went downhill after that but still not a bad round for me.

Check it out on GameGolf  http://www.gamegolf.com/player/randyrives/round/251559

Congrats on the 47 and the birdie!

I am going to have to take a look at GameGolf, that looks pretty cool, though with how inconsistent I play I am not sure how helpful it would be.

So I just completed a 3-day golf school at the Dana Rader Golf School in charlotte. It was all day Friday, all day Saturday, and half a day on Sunday.

In contrast, I took 5 x 30 minute lessons, all two weeks apart.   Each lesson, I only had one thing to work on.   I had 2 weeks of specific drills to master one swing change.   This gave time to ingrain the change in my swing routine.   Even before the instructor suggested the lesson interval, I preferred this one-at-a-time approach.   YMMV.

For those who struggle with short putts, have you tried line putting?   Once in a while, I will use the technique if my short putts are not falling.  This has side benefits of taking time on short putts (vs rushing it), and solely focus on "pendulum" motion (don't even look at the hole, stop lifting your head as you swing).

I'm somewhat in a similar position right now with my Evolvr instructor.

I'm trying to get my weight forward and have my front leg go towards the target on the downswing and then feel like my hips are trusting forward past my head.  I imagine it'll take a while to have this feel become natural, although, to be fair, I just started it so that might just be because it feels very foreign to me, at the moment.

Same thing for me ... I watch my Evolvr videos over and over ... the instruction from these have help me more than anything ... speaking of which I need to get off my lazy butt and sign up again Like you, I am trying to get my weight forward and my head still ... it feels good for about 8-9 holes, then bamn ... I fall back into my old habits

When I play I try not to focus on what my instructor tells me to do.  I just do what feels natural at that point.

It's frustrating at times but I feel that practice is for practice and playing is for playing.

  • 2 weeks later...

Played my first 18 hole rounds of the year this last weekend in Vegas.  I went 108, 122, 108.    On the 122 I was playing tees I should not have been playing plus it happened to coincide with my worst golf of the weekend.  I am hoping I have learned my lesson about playing tees out of my league...

Well I can say I am hitting the ball better, with less topping the ball, and getting more balls up in the air.   My driving today was terrible, putting was better though.   I try and walk 9 holes in the mornings but with work and weather I have only been getting 3 or 4 9 hole rounds in.   Today was not my best but one of my best, shot 48.   Started out decent with par, bogie, par.

Congrats on the 48!  I looked through your scores real quick and saw you had a few sub 50 rounds.  Looks like you are headed in the right direction.

I keep seeing all these Game Golf rounds posted it is getting harder to resist....

I love my GameGolf  it is not perfect but does a very good job.  It is fun to check out my stats, and see how far I actually drive the ball, or the other stats like how many putts.  Right now my longest drive is 242 yards, which I just hit the other day.  It is good to see that I am starting to get more distance, though I really need more consistent drives.

But seriously, my hopes are for lower scores this golf season especially since I have almost completely eliminated my slicing on drives and improved my accuracy on my pitching and chipping game. Now if I can loose a couple of strokes in the putting department it will be a happy golf season.

I have Edel custom fit putter and Aimpoint lesson in my future if I can get my lazy butt off my sofa chair, grab a phone, call for an appointment ....

Played my third round of the season. Shot a 94 (46 + 48). My best round after starting to play again late last summer after about 17 years of not playing. Only broke 100 one time last year. I play Taylormade clubs which tend to have long shafts. Made a small adjustment based on comments on this and other TST threads. Choking up to the very bottom of the grip. Hit 8 fairways and my only OOB shots were on the par 3s. Really didn't notice any loss of distance. Will have to see about a fitting to cut down the shafts somewhat. Feels so good. Thanks to Eric, Dave and everyone else here for your insights and feedback. It made a difference for me and makes me wanting more!

Nice job on the 94!

I went out after work and played 9 and shot a 53, about my usual.  I kept the ball in the fairway for the most part but struggled in other areas...

First round of the year on Sunday. Here's to the first step of the journey to breaking 100. Been striking the ball well at the range this week, hopefully it transfers over to the course. Hopefully I pick up where I left off last year with my 101 but I'm not getting my hopes up. How's everyone year been so far?

Well I thought today would be the day to break 100.  I have been walking 9 holes in the mornings before heading to my studio.  Been shooting sub 50 rounds all week (45-48)   Went to play 18 this morning, thinking this will be the day.  I played terrible, driving was all over the place chipping was bad, and putting was not good.  Only hit 36% of the fairways.  2.17 putts per hole.  Only good note was I broke my record longest drive of 242 by 10 yards.  So my longest drive is now 252 yards.  Final score 102!  Close even while hitting the ball badly.

Not sure when I will get to play 19 holes again, most likely in a couple of weeks.

There's your problem right there (the bolded part) - if not for that pesky 19th hole, you would have broken 100! :-D

Shot an even 100 today on a short course and still didn't feel like I played very well.

The trouble with shooting 100 is you start looking back at every shot you didn't hit right and thinking "all I had to do is sink that one 3 footer I missed, or green that easy 110 yard PW that instead went into the creek, and I would have broke 100". But I guess if I'm going to do that, I'd have to also consider some of the lucky bounces or shots made that I usually don't make.

I got a taste a of what its like to shoot bogey golf for much of the day. I felt like I had control of the game as long as I played within my ability. Unfortunately, I let a couple bad holes become blow up holes. For 16, 17 and 18, I lost the ability to hit full swing shots the way I had for the first 15 holes.

Still, this year has been fun so far despite the higher scores.

    • Day 319 - More mirror work, same focus on finishing higher and more towards the target.
    • Day 135: worked on putting bead for a while with the 2 cups drill.
    • Day 211 (29 Nov 24) - Friday men’s round albeit a solo foursome (temps in the 40’s, day after Thanksgiving and the average age closer to 75 - I’m a youngster at 65).  Interesting day of semi-solid play (8 of 18 GIR). Hit all four par threes in one (a first) - parred each; still had a couple 3 putt bogies; and blew up on 3 of the par 5’s (go figure)). The blow ups were some serious tree rattlers - amplifying how I got stupid and greedy instead of smart and content to just get back in the short stuff.
    • Day 60 - 2024-11-29 Got about 3.5' of snow today, so I was going to go to Golf Evolution, but… I only left the house to throw some snow. Instead, i checked out my putting stroke on HackMotion in the basement. Turns out… it's pretty good, and I'm very in touch with what I'm doing.
