Makes sense @Vinsk. I use to be that palmy grip golfer so I know that is no good.

Awesome thread!! even after all these years.

Adjusting my grip, I find the most difficult thing is the straight long left thumb (right handed).  When I stretch it down the shaft that far, it feels almost as if my whole hand is pulled out and up if that makes sense.  The feeling is so different and I'm trying hard to reset my mind and what I think I feel...

Thanks again @mvmac!

I am a righty, how many knuckles should I see on my left hand? I was told many times 2 to 3 knuckles, (strong grip), I'm now pulling the ball dead left with driver and long irons. I searched on YouTube and watched a couple of videos one of which said to help get rid of a pull to weaken the grip to where you only saw 1 knuckle thus keeping the face from closing over during the swing. Any thoughts about that?

I doubt the grip is why you're actually hitting pulls. You're probably also swinging left a good bit, and your body is just trying to get the face somewhat square to that path.

Try, with a strong grip, to hit some "pushes."

And, like always, post a Member Swing topic. We can't diagnose these things via text very well, not when so much better tools are available at your fingertips.

But no, it's unlikely you should play with a weak grip.

Thanks for the quick response, I'll take your advice of course. I will also try to get a video of my swing posted and soon as the weather warms up and I can get to the range with a friend to video my swing. Thanks again.

You could do a swing indoors if you want, have the space. Phones these days do a good job of filming swings. There are many ways to use your phone without needing anybody to help you. Gorilla tripods, phone holders that clip onto alignment rods or golf bags...just suggestions.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will use my phone and add the video to Drop Box, which I use all the time, I can then post them on TST.

They need to be uploaded to Youtube before submission to TST

OK, sorry I didn't know that, never did that before. I'll have to figure out how to upload to YouTube.

easy peasy....if you have a video on your phone...select share and one of the options is YouTube.  Once back here on the forum, in your member's swing thread,   upload the link  to that thread.

I'm playing this Friday I'll see if I can have one of the guys video me from back and front.

Well, course was closed due to snow and ice still there so this will have to wait. Going to be cold for the next week or two as well.

So, I have a question, and one I think is very important for us amateurs.

I have a bad grip.  It’s way to strong. Way.

However, it is very difficult for me to change this. And I feel like I have bigger (path) issues to work on.

So, I’ll ask, how important is this? From what I understand, the miss that someone with too strong of a grip has is a hook.  However, I never hook.

Changing my grip is awkward and time consuming, and steals from the other things I’m trying to change.  So... what flaw is my overly strong grip creating? And what precedence should it take in things I need to fix?

You "understand" that based on what "common knowledge" is and "common knowledge" is often nowhere near right.

Your grip is

Maybe, and no, it isn't. It takes just as long to grip the club properly as it does to grip the club improperly. And I'm not being vague or mystical here - take that as literally as it sounds.

I don't buy this crap that people offer up about how tough it is to change their grip. If you buy into the change, yes, it's weird for awhile, but you just do it. You make yourself do it. It's exceedingly easy to just GRIP the club differently.

It shouldn't. If it takes you an extra two seconds for awhile to make sure your grip is good, that's not much time.

I don't know. Maybe it's not something you ever need to fix.

You haven't updated your Member Swing topic in two years. And unfortunately you made your videos private, though we ask people NOT to do that, so I can't even look at older videos.

I can’t seem to grip a golf club properly. If I hold it the recommended way in my lead left hand then the right hand gets too strong and if I try to get my right hand on properly the recommended way then my left hand wants to be weak.

Anyone have this problem? I’m at a loss what to do

Film a video of yourself doing this. What kind of grip do you use? Why does the right hand have to be determined by the left hand? I can grip the left hand the same and make the right strong, weak, neutral, and every step in between.

As I look, I did not make these private.   Appears Vimeo made a bunch of changes, and is trying to get people to have pay memberships.   I just need to go in and individually make each video public.

I'll try to get something new up sometime soon.

    • My wife is going to drag me to see Wicked.   She is very excited to see it.   We saw the musical while in Chicago and thought it was very good.  I'm not usually a fan of musicals but I'm looking forward to seeing this.   Gladiator 2 does look good.   I'm going to go back and watch the original Gladiator before going to the theater.
    • MSN Glover expressed his dissatisfaction with what he termed as 'cool kid meetings' between Jordan Spieth, Patrick Cantlay, Tiger Woods and other high-profile golfers. "I think it's terrible," he stated. "And then hiding behind pace of play, I think, challenges our intelligence. They think we're stupid.     "Don't cut fields because it's a pace of play issue. Tell us to play faster, or just say you're trying to appease six guys and make them happy so they don't go somewhere else and play golf." Fitzpatrick joined the conversation on X (formerly Twitter), with the 30-year-old echoing Glover's sentiments regarding the PGA Tour changes. "He's so right," Fitzpatrick posted. "Pathetic that pace of play is spoken about every year and nothing ever gets done."     I agree. Instead of  penalizing  players for  turtle  play they appease the  slow jerks  by  cutting the  fields. They will play even slower  knowing they will NEVER be  penalized.
    • I've been Playing Golf for: 3 years  My current handicap index or average score is: 1.5 My typical ball flight is: neutral /slight draw The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: hook   Looking for some advice please folks. Started golfing three years ago and got hooked. Had some early lessons and was a slicer etc.  I used to have a severe inside takeaway and through working hard to fix as ever (this game…) it’s now gone too far the other way where I take it back way outside.  i think it looks really bad and have gotten a lesson last year where we tried to competely reset the swing and it ruined things for months as I couldn’t get it to stick (my fault).    anyway do I need to fix this? I hit it reasonably solid but don’t know what else I’m looking at or need to clean up. All opinions welcomed!  Videos:
    • A local film critic gave the movie “Wicked” a great review. I saw the stage musical several years ago (pre-COVID) and enjoyed it. Likely won’t see the cinematic version but one never knows. I probably will go to “Gladiator 2” at some point unless the reviews are terrible.
