Ferhety lurking on the fringe grass grabs winner as Rory walks off green.  I'm surprised F did not run up and pull ball from cup in his eagerness to pander.  Would have been a wonderful sight to see Rory step on F's cable and walk on to tent.

Feherty (or someone else if it's a tourney Feherty isn't working) talks to the winner of every tournament as they walk off the 18th green. It's pro sports, nothing unusual about it at all.

It's a scenario question. Rory wins and stops to be on tv before signing his score card... but blows off an autograph request from an 11yo kid during a previous round or event saying he had to sign his score card prior to signing anything else.

Which is correct? Or is Rory's interview acceptable because he didn't "sign" anything prior to signing his score card.

I think that's the question.

Some portions of this rely on my memory... which is correct but may include the substitution of another golfer, 11yo kid, and tournament because reality is different.

I think that's the question.

My understanding is that the PGA Tour has a rule about signing autographs prior to signing the scorecard so if Rory had stopped to sign that autograph he would have faced a sanction of some kind (not sure what the penalty is).

Rory (or any winner) is expected to speak with the on-course announcer after walking of the final green, it's normal and happens at the end of EVERY PGA TOUR EVENT.

Don't see why this is causing teeth gnashing, I guess Rory will be facing a legion of irrational haters just like Tiger did.

Some guys on here are still trying to insinuate that Rory is a flash in the pan which is, to put it charitably, laughable.

We do not know how the timetables have been built in each tournament. This was ET/PGA event in USA, The Open was ET/PGA event in Europe. Different organizers, their rules.

11yo kid was in wrong place at wrong time, shite happens.

The interview goes out to millions of spectators and it is how they've been doing it for a long time. It is a part of the tournament and entertainment that is golf. And it's done on most tournaments, has nothing to do with Rory.

If Rory goes off his way to give an autograph to a kid, everyone else will get the same idea and try getting one. And didn't The PGA have a rule that they can't sign autographs before the card?

Nothing to see here, move on.

Anyone insinuating that i dislike McIlroy is looney.  I'm joekelly, and Irish too!!   I do not like talking  heads, in-your-face news parasites or self-promoting verbiage machines (aka PGA tour).  What i do luv is my mute button .  My  ignorance of the situation also shows how little i watch golf on USA TV.

I believe the facts are that the Open requested players not to sign autographs until after they signed their cards. It was not a rule. I believe Rors was escorted by security, and reached out to sign the autograph for the boy, but his security detail did or said something to turn away the boy, and Rors, caught between a rock and a hard place, went along with security, and did not sign. It seemed like one of those awkward moments.

As to Feherty, or Kostis, it's usually one of them on CBS, with what turns out is the typical 30 second to one minute sound bite after the round for a "Congrats."

I take it that was the first golf tournament you watched on TV? Happens every week.

Seems to me the little kid should not have been inside the ropes in the first place.

Just because he is a kid everyone gives him a pass and blames Rory.

What if that was 30 year old guy .... attitude would be complete different.

The little brat should never have been there in the first place .... period.

And it sure as hell isn't pandering.  I call it doing the job he's paid to do.  Once again, Kelly dumps on someone for no reason other than to stroke his own ego.

    • Sure, but how was your alignment? 🙂 Day 53 - 2024-11-22 Mirror work after getting back home. Wife is a superstar for her career/job/whatever.
    • I would say your back nine is the second nine you play that day. It's part of what makes getting some of those holes tougher. Or, if 18 holes are played pretty often, out of A, B, and C, and you often play A and C, A is the front and C is the back, regardless of the order you play them in. That way not birdieing C #7 isn't overcome by birdieing the easier A #7 on a day you played it C-A instead of A-C. But, at the end of the day, nobody really cares except yourself.
    • Day 128: played 9. Nice little even 9, with 2 birdies and 2 bogeys.
    • @DeadMan, I think your approach makes sense. As @dennyjones said, consistency is the key.
