That's awesome spoof. Weird Al keeps on delivering good stuff. Man, he's been around a while. I must point out though that the things Shorty is mentioning represent sloppy or lazy thinking, not simply ignorance of grammar. A couple nuggets in there are on target to what he's talking about (literally v figuratively, etc), but much of the video is a different kind of annoyance, I think. Thanks for the embed tho! Just showed my daughter- she loves that. She's become a grammar nerd and loved the original song (even if totally inappropriate original lyrics for her age).

Proud to say my first ever concert was Weird Al. Yes. Alapalooza Tour '93. I was ten years old. My mom took me. Good times. :-D

Not sure why I like "it is what it is." It seems to convey the idea that there is nothing more to say about a given topic, the situation can't be changed, there is no choice in course of action, we must accept. I could say all those things about whatever it is we're discussing, or I can just say, "it is what it is," and you understand.

This is one of my favorite phrases, for exactly the reason you state.  Perhaps because I do not work in a field where meaningless buzzwords are employed, or where someone would say "it is what it is" as an excuse for inaction, I haven't been turned against it.  I can see how that sort of use would be annoying.

It always makes me think of The Wire, too.

We are having a "significant rain event" at the moment.

I'm pretty sure we used to just call it "heavy rain".

Oh, I almost forgot. You no longer contact or call people, you "reach out" to them.

I think literally would be acceptable there if he did in fact soil himself at a time in his life when he wasn't an infant.

What I want to know is,.. What makes a buzzword or power phrase, or like, whatever, so infectious that they become so popular, I HATE .."at the end of the day" it just seems so final and the that person saying it is being arrogantly superior, I also dislike high 5's but that's another story! I have to admit I do sometimes begin a sentence with ..so! I realise it doesn't make sense to start a sentence with so, but it does grab a persons attention!

I'm hearing this (starting sentence with so) a lot more in the business world. Fine if every once in awhile but there are some I've heard over past year or 2 that begin every sentence this way. That is annoying.

The one that's been starting to bug me lately, not because there is ANYTHING wrong with it gramatically, but just because it seems to be "buzzy" on TV and talk radio lately is "have a conversation."

As in "I think it's time we have a conversation about Isreal."  Or, "I realize that Durant is unlikely to come to LA, but at least we can now have a conversation about it."

It's the same as "utilize" to me.  You did in 3 words and 17 letters what you could have done in one and 4 if you just said "talk."  What's wrong with "talk?"

It is my understanding that we all strive to leverage our individual competencies in the linguistic arena to add value to the discussions here at the Sand Trap. It this organic, bottom-up approach from all of our valued contributors that makes the site so much more than just the sum of its parts and, ultimately, allows it to literally take flight.

    • Day 549, May 4, 2024 After lessons and working with Natalie, hit some balls for awhile. Just backswing stuff. Forgot about the slightly shorter stuff, though I'm sure it was as they were only about 75% speed with brief pauses.

    • Best drive I've ever hit: I will not be answering any questions about the rest of the hole. Or the round, for that matter.
    • I tried hybrids way back when TaylorMade introduced the copper orange Firesole Rescue, the clubhead having been made of titanium which was still relatively new even in drivers back then. I couldn't hit it well at all, and while the success of hybrids suggests that the modern ones must be quite good,  I'm perfectly happy with the 5, 7, and 9-woods.  Early ones of mine were Top Flite Intimidator 400s made by Spalding... and also made of titanium, now that I think of it.  I still have them in my basement. I do bag a driving iron, but it's a one-trick-pony that never sees fairway use.
    • The last time I played Maxfli balls, Dunlop was still making them. How long ago was that? Mostly, though, I used to play Top Flites (original 336 dimple model) when Spalding was still making them. Now I play the Pro V1x. Last time that I ordered some, Titleist was still making them. Let's see how long that lasts.
