First time that I watched the show. I found it boring.  Caught bits and pieces here and there and only watched the "finale" out of curiosity making great use of the fast forward button on my DVR.  Will probably not watch it again.

I've seen previous editions of this show only now and again, but I was a little surprised by the quality of the golf. It wasn't quite as good as I remembered it. That said, it can be interesting to watch people in a competitive environment hitting some of the same kind of shots that you do..

How many Big Breakers have actually gone on to substantial pro careers?

I doubt I have a good idea as we tend to follow only the top dogs in the PGA.  But my impressions from the PGA and the LPGA:

1 - Active and cashing checks?  1 or 2 guys, about 4 or 5 of the women look to be making a good living and popping up working in the tournaments.

2 - Winning tournments? (even 1 win I'd say is substantial and proof of talent) - Tommy Gainey, of course, maybe 1 or 2 of the ladies (Gerina Pillar comes to mind)

(people in the know here that follow more closely will correct me of course) - here's a good link  http://golf.about.com/od/thebigbreak/tp/best-big-break-golfers.htm

It looks like Tony Finau is the real thing too.  but yet to see if he fits in group 1 or 2.  I really think it's just a matter of time before he is in group 2....(if not already, I really don't know)

One thing from the Big Breaks, for the men, pretty much these guys stood out from the get go.  For the women, there was less of a defined line between minor league and major league, but you could also pretty much tell who had the game from the start.

At least two from a couple of seasons ago (Jackie and Sadena) got their LPGA cards for this upcoming season, so they will be fun to watch and root for if they ever get into contention.

Tommy Gainey and Matt Every have won on the PGA Tour. Three women have played in the Solheim Cup. I'm drawing a blank right now, on their names, but for sure three have made that team. That's pretty impressive as far as I'm concerned. For those five, at least, I think being a part of The Big Break has paid dividends. It seems to a person the contestants acknowledge what a pressure cooker the show is and how that environment has helped them. I agree with most of you that this season was one of the less compelling.

Mallory squeaked by this year too, earning her LPGA Card by virtue of being top 10 on Symetra. She had a few bad tourneys at the end but managed to hold on. Emily Talley wasn't so fortunate. She started well this season, but faded to 18th down the stretch. http://www.symetratour.com/stats/stats-detail.aspx?q=official%20money

I've watched numerous editions of BB but the last several only out of being golf related and slow and cold off season thus far....but like you stated I'm sure it will be my last, the Big Break series has ran it's course imho...if anything it needs to rethink some...my suggestion is take a bunch of high cappers (10-15 range) and the winner get a free yr of lessons from a top teaching professional or something....this taking already established golfers is getting old imho

The high handicapper idea would be interesting but would people that are better golfers than the contestants? I think Big Break needs more seasons of bringing back old contestants of players we liked and hated. I like the Where Are They Now editions.

I believe I have seen most of the BB sessions since it began years ago.   I enjoy watching but concede some BBs have been better than other.  This show seems to uniquely combine divergent personalities with "sort of golf" play.  The challenges set up a lot of pressure on shots as one bad shot and you can go home even if you're the better player, ask Anthony.  I would also agree that the abilities of the players can vary quite a lot.   However, usually, but not always, the cream comes to the top.  In any case I enjoy the show and will probably continue to watch it if GC continues to produce it.  But I suppose it isn't for everyone.

I'm a Gator and remember when Matt Every, a 4 time collegiate All-American at UF got bounced on the first show. Had to laugh at that. He did win last year on the tour. PS. I watch it for the wimmin.

Jimmys playing this week at the Valspar. I saw a quick glimpse tonight on golf channel. The good news is that he beat John Daly, Charlie Hoffman, and Blayne Barber today. The bad news is ... That was it. +5 76, T138

    • It sucks to carry around a lot of water, but ideally it should be way more than we think.  I buy those gallon jugs of water and hang them from my pushcart when I walk. I agree with the electrolytes as well. You don't just sweat out water, but you lose electrolytes as well.
    • A 2010 study from the Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research compares the effects of different pre-round stretch routines for competitive golfers. Active Dynamic Warm-up: Swing Medicus driver, hit 3 shots each with selected clubs. Passive Static Stretches: Various athletic stretches such as hamstrings, chest stretch and reverse trunk twist. The subjects were collegiate golfers with a HDCP index of 5 or less who engaged regularly in strength and fitness routines. All golfers had two test days: one with active dynamic (AD) warmup, a second with AD followed by static stretches (SS). The results were then compared, within golfers and across golfers. For performance testing after the warmups, golfers hit three driver shots at time 0, 15, 30 and 45 minutes after the warmup. The study shows that static stretch formats produced poorer performance outcomes in the four measures shown in Table 5, which shows Time Zero results. The performance deficits under the PSS protocol decreased over time. Some suggestions on why the passive protocol was tied to lower performance than the active protocol: The passive stretches routine induced excessive range of motion,  basically producing wobbles in the golf swing. Other research indicates that the stretching produced slack in the tendons, lessening the amount of muscle force that could be transferred into the shot. One caveat: The study had good scientific controls and balancing of treatments (test routines). This was, however, an exploratory study and raises as many questions as it answers. Also, although the study was done back in 2010, it is still cited as a primary work in recent reviews. A quick online search did not reveal any follow-ups on the study. For those interested, the study PDF is below. PassiveStretchGOLF.pdf
    • I have trouble with vertigo on occasion, but have gotten nutritional and biofeedback tips to keep it at bay. Dehydration can help trigger v-like symptoms so one recommendation, along with maintaining overall hydration, is to start with 8 oz. of water early in the morning. A meta-analysis on Golf As Physical Activity indicated that golf is rated as a moderately intensive physical activity. This scientific literature review came from the University of Edinburgh. The physical activity level ties into hydration. A former university colleague was a marathon runner who had published a couple of articles on endurance training. He likewise said that golf was a moderate physical activity especially when the round stretched past  the two-hour mark. For hydration he recommended switching from water to electrolyte drink on the back nine (past two hour point of exercise) to prevent cramping. At the two-hour point of moderate activity, water starts flushing electrolytes out of the body, which can lead to fatigue and cramping. (I have had trouble with leg cramps in the past during exertion.) During a round, I start out with water on the front nine and switch to sports drink on the back nine. If the day is unusually hot, I may drink 8 oz. of Pedialite concentrate before going to the course. Maintaining overall hydration plus on-course boosters keeps me going.
    • Personally I’d try booking direct first - either via the Vidanta golf reservations number/email or through the resort concierge - especially for Christmas/New Year. Vidanta’s main courses (Greg Norman and Nicklaus designs) are popular and can book out fast this time of year, so direct often gives you the best shot at your preferred tee times.
