This is my favorite tournament to watch for the scenery.  It is a visually stunning course on TV.  I've never played it, but hope to some day.

I dunno, I find the scenery always kind of ticks me off. Particularly when I compare it to whats outside my window. :)

Yeah, it's always a kick in the golf nuts when I watch this tournament. It's colder than a witch's titty up here and these guys are soaking up the rays... Which hole has that huge downhill tee shot? Where they average ridiculous drives?

The Hyundai Tournament of Champions is the calendar-year opening tournament of golf's PGA Tour season. Founded as the Tournament of Champions in 1953, the field is restricted to golfers who won a tournament on the tour during the previous season.

JASON DAY
Day, who launches the ball about as high as anyone not named Rory McIlroy, should feast on the par 5s at Kapalua. And, it may be nothing more than an omen, but Aussies have had good fortune in Maui.
JONATHAN WALL

Ryan Moore, Jason Day,
Hideki Matsuyama, Jimmy Walker
RYAN MOORE
Moore closed out 2014 with a win at the CIMB Classic and has two top-10 finishes at Kapalua. Past success and recent form will come together this week as Moore opens 2015 with a victory at the winners-only event.

GEOFF OGILVY
Ogilvy has an affinity for Kapalua's magnificent Plantation Course so I see no reason to pick against the two-time champion.

Matt Kuchar, Jason Day,
Geoff Ogilvy, Bubba Watson
MATT KUCHAR
Of Kuchar's seven TOUR wins, six have been in the Eastern Time Zone, so I'm going against the grain here. But hard to ignore the fact that he's a collective 67 under in five starts at Kapalua.

JIMMY WALKER
Kapalua takes some getting used to and this is Walker's second trip there. He's long off the tee, hits a lot of greens, has a good short game and makes a ton of birdies. That works well anywhere.

First trip back to Kapalua since 2011 after winning this event in back-to-back years. Aloha, Geoff, and welcome back ... to the winner's circle!

Matt Kuchar, Geoff Ogilvy,
Ryan Moore, Bubba Watson
MATT KUCHAR
How much does Kuchar love Hawaii? He stayed here for a month-long vacation after last year's Sony Open. Taking an educated guess on the others after long layoffs and hoping to cash in on Ogilvy's love of Kapalua.
FRED ALBERS

CHRIS KIRK
Kirk's game should play well at the Plantation Course. He can be a streaky ball-striker at times, who struggles to hit greens in regulation -- but everyone hits greens at Kapalua. The putting surfaces average more than 7,000 square feet and once Kirk gets on the green, he can dominate with his putter.

I know the season technically started a long time ago, but with the big holiday break and this being the TOC, it really feels like the true start of the pga season. And I always love watching them play at Kapalua while it's dark outside here. Very excited!!!

My golf bag has a Hawaiian theme and this is the best two weeks of the tour for me. Aside from the first 3 majors, probably. I enjoyed it more as the true season opener because you wouldn't see anybody except for the skins game and some of those didn't show anyway. But watching golf, in prime time, from Hawaii....awesome!

It is awesome. Hit one of my longest drives ever on 18, but so does everyone else. :-D

Those who could be bothered showing up, that is. Which is why guys like Appleby and Ogilvy do well there. It's an atmosphere free zone and a cashfest.

The most meaningless, boring event of the year. Looks awful on TV.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

You wouldn't have the same thoughts about this course and tournament if you had the privilege of playing this course. I played it 2 weeks ago and it was a great experience. I'll just assume that by you saying "it looks awful on tv", you are saying that tv doesn't do the course justice of its true beauty and design. Although you can bomb a drive 400 plus yards, the course has a lot of its own defends such as the winds, uneven lies, tight lies around the greens, Bermuda greens that break towards to ocean even when you think they won't and its spectacular views that take you focus off of golf at times.

What's in my bag... Driver: Taylormade Aero Burner TP (10.5 degree) Fujikura Speeder 6.2 V.C. X-stiff 3-wood: Taylormade RBZ (15 degree) Hybrid: PING i15 (20 degree) Irons: PING S55 (4-W) with DG x100 Wedges: PING Tour s (50, 54 and 60 degree) Putter: Scotty Cameron Select Newport 1.5

Im sure the rest is all true, but I can promise that this won't be true for me once I have the luxury of playing there. ;)

Correct. The course is too 3 dimensional for television.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
