two things

1.  will he ever do this again in his life?

2.  does he get a stroke or two penalty for interfering with the ball he just hit?

I definitely laughed!

I'm still almost not believing it. I don't see strong wind and I've never seen a ball popped straight up let alone backward.

I've seen it happen at the range, but they were using a 3w sized head, teed up high.  The ball went up and then landed on the roof of the range.  It was almost like a straight popup and then the backspin and wind pushed it back to the roof.

LMAO  I've seen some strange things, but that takes the cake.

I've seen it happen with balls tee'd high and people hitting with woods, but it looks like he's topping the ball and create a pitch mark with the ball.

Strange things happen, but I have trouble seeing how the ball could achieve that much vertical lift without getting any velocity forward. It looks like the ball doesn't move forward at all, maybe a little backward even.

I got lucky and happened to catch one on video. My buddy (a terrible golfer) popped up his drive off the tee. The ball went straight up about 20-25 feet in the air, and landed about 2 yards in front of him. If the wind were blowing strong enough, I could see a scenario where that shot would have come back to hit him.

No. 16 at Algonquin GC in St. Louis, a 565-yd. par 5. The drives come out of a narrow chute with big trees on both sides.

On occasion, someone would hit a low pull that caught a tree and rebounded OB to the rear of the tee.

Dont' need to see no video.  I have, my own personal self, made such a humbling shot off the tee.  Popped up, back over my head.  In my younger days, of course.  Gods, i hope never again.

Can even remember the place: a small 9 hole layout, Cumberland Bend,  along the Cumberland River near Gainesboro, TN, oh, probably about 1985.  Maybe the 3rd hole, dogleg right, big tree at corner, hayfields along edges of fairways.  Needed to go over the tree, took my driver (axe) and chopped the ball (or was it the earth ball) so severely the clubhead went into the dirt behind the ball, ball pops up, goes back behind the tee box.  No camera phones then. No evidence remains except this report.

I have a similarly funny experience, however not quite as skilful as hitting the ball backwards.

Rewind to last June & I was playing with my Dad & my Uncle at which point you would certainly call us all extremely part time golfers (we'd play literally a few times a year).

Anyway, we were half way round on to a long par 4, I was first to the tee picked out a 3 wood tee'd the ball up high (thinking this would help with my worm burner tee shots).

Played my shot and somehow managed to completely miss the ball literally not even clip it, but whack the tee about 20 yards in front of me with the ball just dropping straight down from where the tee once stood.

If you are struggling to picture it, think a waiter pulling the cloth from a table and leaving the plates etc. on the table. Yep, that's right I did that with a golf ball and a tee.

Of course dad & uncle couldn't believe what they saw and rolled up, thinking I had somehow managed to defy the laws of gravity or been practicing one of the greatest trick shots they had ever seen.

Suffice to say I was fortunately given a free mulligan for the entertainment I had provided.

Yeah, it's not off the tee, my mistake. For some reason, if the shot was real, it had to be tee'd up, so I thought there was a tee, clearly not. Ball flight looks very unnatural.

I used to tee it up very high, and once I popped it up once, but it went to my right, not backwards. Put a nice dent on the top of my driver. (Luckily it was a cheap $10 one I got on clearance). Needless to say I don't tee it up high anymore.
