I was about to say I was the same as most here in taking a year to break 100. But then I went and checked my stats and it shows my first club competition round below 100 was a 98 I shout 5 months after joining my golf club back in 2013! Took me another year I think to break 90 as well. Regards Mailman

I don't know to be frank.

I started to play for fun. I was really enjoying golf for quite a few months without actually counting scores. Then, when my buddies started playing, obviously it got crazy competitive. Now i am averaging about 85 to 90 per round. However I did hit a 78 before.

I went to the range like crazy before my first ever round. My first round ended up being a 114 from the ladies tees, but the second round was a 92 from the men's tees. Thus, I guess my answer would be "two rounds" but I did hit thousands of balls before ever playing.

I wish more people would hit the range before going to the course. :(

My first round under 100 was in my second season back in '88. Took me about 7yrs to break 90.

Osmond,

I am impressed.  One for having the will power to practice at the range and not play a round.  And 2 breaking a 100 in your 2nd round on the course.  I can hit the ball much better at the range, but once I get on the course it is like a different person hitting the ball. :-D

To be honest, I never shot over 100. When my Dad saw I had a semi interest in the game at around age 12, he would take me to the course with him, and while he played with his buddies- I was a range hound. He started me on the basics- stance, grip, etc... and I was a bit of a natural. that summer was only range work and the odd pitch and putt round at the beach. Same with the following summer, until mid September sometime. He thought it might be time to play and took me out for an afternoon round. Naturally, the first tee shot was a big clanking slice to the right. Once the nerves settled, I fell into a kind of groove and made forward progress and kept everything in play. Dad was a bit of a stickler for 'playing it down'- no 'winter rules' or mulligans. At the end of the day- I shot a 96 to his 104.... And he never beat me after that, either. He never said as much, but I think it kind of bugged him, but he had the mixed emotions of being real proud of me as well. The following summer it was off to the free Golf clinic at our other local course twice a week. Broke 90 fairly regularly after the clinic, and REGULARLY breaking 80 was about 2 years later.

Having just started to play golf about 4 months ago, my goal is to break 100.  My question to the group is, when you started how long did it take you to break 100.  And how often did you play during that period?

I started hitting balls a a driving range in the month of March a few years ago... By the end of that summer I was breaking 100 pretty regularly.

I've never broken 100 and I've been playing off and on since 1992. I play for fun. I don't practice because I just don't have time. I played a lot more this spring and summer than I ever did previously and my game improved. I'm hitting my driver more straight, irons more reliably, and lose the most strokes because of my short game and putting. One day I'll take lessons but right now I just can't.

I don't play golf, I play at golf. There's a difference.

It took me over a year and about 35 rounds along with a series of lessons before I broke 100.

It took me very little time to break 100 when I started playing aged about 40. Maybe three or four rounds? But three caveats: 1. I took lessons from the start, so by the time I played my fourth round I'd probably had three lessons. 2. The course I started playing on was quite short, about 6200 yards. I was shooting in the low 90s regularly there when someone invited me to play the Ailsa course at Turnberry, and I shot about 115. 3. Regularly breaking 90 took much longer, I hung around the 18-20 handicap mark for quite a while.

The more I practise, the luckier I hope to get.

Rrives, if you get a chance check out the breaking bad thread, it is slow during the winter but is full of all of us trying to break 100. Last year we had a handful make it and it was fun following everyones journey to get there. I shot a 49 on 9 holes once but a 104 was my best 18 holes. I am about to start my second year of golf and hope to get there this year.

Someone asked about the clubs I use.  I have a set of Taylormade Rocketballz Irons 3-SW with Reg. Graphite Shaft.  Rocketballz 2 Drive 10.5 loft, Cleveland 808 3 wood and a Cobra hybird.

Thanks for the responses.

Gipper I will check out the thread you mentioned.  Going to play a different course today much longer and more water hazards, should be a challenge would be great to break a hundred but I will be happy with my normal 104-108 score since this is a much harder course.

I played occasionally as a kid and was TERRIBLE. My Dad was not a good teacher and I basically went out for the fun of it. I didn't touch any clubs again until 2 seasons ago and started taking the game seriously. I consider this my REAL beginning of playing golf since honestly I probably would have been better off NOT playing in my youth and developing bad habits. It took me almost exactly a year to break 100. My first time playing after probably a 5-10 year layoff was early August of 2013 and I shot a 98 on 7/29/14 (Yes I still have the ball with the date marked). I didn't break 100 again the rest of last season but Im hoping to have more sub 100 rounds this year. Biggest factor in breaking 100 was spending A LOT of time on the chipping/putting green and getting my drives under control.

I broke 100 the first year I started playing, but the course plays a big role.    Is it a po-dunk 6000yd course, or legit?

I  broke 100 starting my second year playing. But it was a flat course with flat greens (no ondulations) meaning I always got perfect lies and easy putts.

I began caddying at age 12, and started trying to play golf the next year. I was self-taught, using Doug Ford's book Getting Started in Golf. My baseball experience gave me a too armsy swing.

I was 16 (year four) when I first broke 100. It was probably the third round of the summer, and I broke through by four strokes or so. (Sorry, I didn't frame the scorecard).

I was using men's irons at the time, and by age 16 I was finally big enough to swing them with some consistency.

The first few times I played a regulation 18 hole golf course I started out shooting in the high 90s. I didn't shoot 100+ until  I tackled Spy Glass. That course still kicks my back side.

Well Saturday was a great example of the Good, the Bad and the Ugly.   Warmed up on the range and was hitting the irons better than I have ever.  The range is small and good not hit driver (not allowed).   Got on the course and while I did hit some good shots it was no where close as to the range.  Hitting off a mat is way easier than the course.   My putting on this course was terrible averaging 2.6 putts per hole.  Ended up shooting 111 with a 10 on a par 5, a 9 on another and an 8 on the last par 5.  I was putting for par more times than in the past but was 3 putting more than ever.

I used my Game Golf for the first time and liked it. missed tagging a few shots and wished there was a way to add penalty shots on the course.  But other than that it worked great.
