I think there is an underlying reason they do feel that they were wrong before. When the rule was made (speculation), it was made with a mindset that women were inferior. It wasn't made with a harmless premise, ie. "it's just a boys club." I think this is what they realized. Perhaps its a means of washing the sins away.

Political correctness and pressure from women groups made them feel they were wrong.  There are valid reasons why men and women should be excluded from private clubs and it has nothing to do with equality.  What sins needed to be washed away?  They just wanted a place where they could act and speak freely without fear of offending a woman and all the other drama that is created by having women be part of the club.

Are we that tough to be around? This is a golf country club. Women just wanted to be able to be members of a country club that has been a landmark. Build another locker room and expand membership. How hard can it be? I know, next thing you know we'll try to book 8:30 tee times!

The bottom line in all of this is that these are private organizations. They have the right to determine who they want to be members and who they don't. If they want to be a mens only club that's fine. If not, that's fine too. I don't see any reason why they should be mens only, and I think it's great that they decided to let women in, but had they not made that decision, it wouldn't have bothered me at all. The idea that they should all of a sudden move women to the front of the waiting list implies that they somehow did something wrong by not letting them join in the first place; that is not the case.

This is exactly how I feel. They didn't do anything wrong to begin with, so there is no reparation to be made.

Has RSG made any statements about why they felt was the reason for this change in membership and policy for women?

Guessing they wanted to update their image?

Maybe they just realized the irony of being a "Royal" course that would not allow the reigning "Royal" to be a member?

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Yeah totally ironic, and I was going to post something like "One of their most beloved rulers was a lady.". . .

Wait, what drama?

I work at a job that is 95% men. I speak French as fluently as they do and there is almost nothing they can do to offend me except to treat me as unworthy of the same respect I give them. So I must beg the question, exactly what the heck do you need to speak so freely about that would be so offensive? Hmm?

But as a woman, for my part, if you don't want me in your club just because I'm a girl, it would be a cold day in hell before I would volunteer to associate with you.

You're in the majority in this day and age, which is probably a good reason to change the rules. . .

I've read in this forum in many different threads about how we can increase the game and draw players in. Bigger holes and whatever. Being inclusive and welcoming is the obvious first step. I just posted in another thread that I had a lot of misconceptions about golf, the cost of playing and equipment, and mostly the perceived notion that golf is a snobby game. We have to blow that stuff out of the water. I'm not suggesting at all that we forego the traditional etiquette and whatnot. That's just good manners. But I think the old ways of exclusivity just really need to go. My job title at work is "director of happiness." It's a catch-all title because I serve three bosses and I try to take care of all my workers and welcome everyone who comes through the door with the same respect and happy face that I would hope to see if it were me. And it works! Honey vs Vinegar, baby.

It looks like they have red tees on all 7 courses. Pretty impressive courses. Balgove is a 9 hole course that is only 1600 yards or so. http://www.standrews.com/

That's St. Andrews not St. Georges and the courses in St. Andrews are not owned or controlled by the R&A.;
