Re: doesn't allow denim of any kind, requires a collared shirt

As was the case where I grew up and play now. I don't even wear jeans to church. I have never seen a PGA pro wear denim during a sanctioned event. It's too casual.

I stick by my assumption that a denim-wearing golfer is more likely to barrack at a pro tourney.

I don't think what kind of pants a person wears dictates their behavior at a golf tournament.  When I was a bouncer I threw out more guys wearing "slacks" than jeans, the "slacks" wearers don't seem to hold their alcohol as well and feel more entitled to act like jerks.

We'll agree to disagree. Fair enough?

Thanks for stereotyping me. I've worn jeans before golfing. Mostly because I forgot my shorts or non-denim pants. I have never once yelled out in a tournament like the morons who you hear scream, "Mash Potatoes" on TV.

Maybe you want to stop judging a book by its cover there.

I wasn't stereotyping people today I was providing anecdotal experience from a past vocation.

I know - but recognize that is exactly how these things come into being.....

Probably the same way Ferguson came to his opinion on demin-wearers.....

(Disclaimer - until we hit cargo shorts season, I wear jeans.  I also find it shallow when people think their outfits are a part of their demeanor or professionalism - exception would be a fashion designer I guess.)

I also find it ironic when people complain about bigotry and call the offenders "rednecks"......

I also find it ironic when feminists categorize "all men" by their own personal stereotypes

I also find it ironic when people cry racism by "all cops"

anyway - this is way too touchy feely.

Back on topic, I'm not a fan of the shouters.  But I am a fan of the industry making enough money to be able to televise it and for there to be enough fans of all pants demographics to support a lot of good courses in my area.

So I'm conflicted.  I'd recommend to the fans, enjoy the tournament, purchase everything including the drinks, be quiet - no one wants to hear you.

Are jorts ok? Dumb to make judgement calls on this superficial metric. I regularly wear jeans in the winter months. Doesn't define me in any way. Jeez.

I hit the range in jeans for the first time last wee because I got to the course and realized I wore my jeans. Oh well. I've seen lots of guys play in jeans. I wouldn't because of comfort, not obligation.

Are jorts ok?

Good gravy, we have to have some sort of standards, absolutely not! :-D

Anyways, back to the topic. What would be productive ways of deterring potential hecklers? I feel that the idea of handing out lunch/beverage vouchers for people who voluntarily turn in cell phones would help with that "issue" (which I personally don't find that bothersome, but it's not my game out there for millions), but how would you prevent people from shouting absurd things without simply tossing them out?

You wouldn't. Simply toss them out.

Well The Open has fans go through metal detectors and xray machines before being let onto the grounds. If they are found with a phone or camera they have to store it in a locker and pick it up at the end of the day. Pretty sure The Open has a lot less players being disturbed by shutter clicks as a result.

As for moronic yells thats easily enforced as theres stewards on every hole and they could warn someone for doing it and if they do it again boot them out.

sorry dude, you lost your case

There was an annual tour stop in Vegas several years ago. At the time it was called the Las Vegas Invitational. (LVI) You would have to park some where, and catch a bus/shuttle to the main gate of the tournament. Once you made it to the gate, security would ask you if you had a camera, pager, or cell phone. If you said no, but the security guy thought you did, a search might happen. I actually saw purses, and back packs being searched. If you did, then they gave you two choices. First choice was to check your stuff in at a booth, which you would reclaim when you left the tournament with proper ID, previously given. Second choice was to get back on the bus and take the ride back to your car. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. If you needed your phone, or pager for medical reasons you would be asked to show a letter from your doctor. A lot folks were getting back on the shuttles.

At the time, this particular tournament was having a tough time selling tickets due to very few of the best of the best wanting to play there. Once the word spread about folks not being able to bring in their electronics, the problem became much bigger.  After that snafu on the tournament organizers part, they started giving away free tickets from various businesses around town for future tournaments. They still sell tickets, but quite a few are still given away.  All the tickets have a buy one, get one free buffet at a nearby casino. Some folks don't even bother with the golf being played, and just use their ticket for the free food.

My thoughts on controlling PGA tour crowds, is that you can always over regulate anything, I always thought it was very arrogant of players having fans removed over something they said, or did that didn't amount to much. I think Sabbatini was one of the worst. If you want fans to show up, you can't piss them off with too many regulations.

Me, I had a great pair of binoculars with a built in camera.  They never checked binoculars, or spotting scopes back then.

I remember that, the PGA stop that is at TPC, right? That was the first time I remember them actively taking phones like that.  Now I see most courses and tournaments don't care about the phones. I guess as far as the people telling, what does it really matter, if they do it after the shot.  Its annoying but it doesn't bother me.  Some guys like Keegan Bradley actually encourage the Bobba Booeys (Howard Stern Show reference) when asked about it.

He's from London, he probably means The Open as in The Open Championship. I understand you have one over there as well though......? :-D

Wrong Open dude.

He is referring to The Open ..... as in the one that will be played at St. Andrews this year.

    • Yeah, I think I misread that part. I read "in front of" and kinda skipped the rest.
    • We just completed our winter league (Jan 1 - April 30)  Our scoring was simple.  We used the 18 birdies app.  You get 1 point for every member of the league you beat head to head in an 18 hole round (no handicap).  You also get a point for completing the round.  Therefore 4 members play a round- winner of the round gets 4 points, runner-up gets 3, third gets 2, and last gets 1.  Points accumulate throughout the season.  You can play as many times as you want. Our winner accumulated 110 points while second was 102 and third was 97.  We had a total of 16 members in the league.  No issues whatsoever.  All about fun.
