How tight should a watch be, specifically while golfing? I received a watch for my birthday and needed a couple links taken out of it to start with, but I think I'm going to need one more (at least) removed to golf without taking it off. This is because I have found that it keeps shifting at impact past my wrist bone and sort of wedging itself uncomfortably into my wrist, so I've been taking it off. As it is a solar powered watch (and I'd rather not place it in my bag where it could be scratched by another item or "found" by someone else), I'd like to be able to keep it on while golfing but am unsure as to how snug it needs to fit for this. Any tips?

Another vote for golf without a watch. Try to enjoy your round instead of knowing the group in front took exactly 20 minutes to get off the first hole.

If it's a mechanical watch, do not wear it. If it's Quartz-battery operated-then it's fine. As to how tight, it's personal preference. I usually have mine at snug fit. Enough to rotate it slightly manually but not too loose.

I wear a garmin watch when I play, snug, makes no difference to my game, I'm a righty and have it on my left.

exactly the same, dont even notice it (which kind of defeats the object when its there for yardage!)

I always wear a watch when I play golf. Feels strange without one. Mine has a leather band. If you have a steel band with links, I would have it fitted just slightly loose. The metal bands tend to stick to your wrist when you sweat, and walk up your wrist as you mentioned. The leather band tends to absorb the sweat and stay in place a lot better. Not sure what kind of watch, but you can look into to have it fitted with a leather band.

Why?

I think it's lame to wear a watch while you're playing ... except if you're a PGA pro and paid to do so.

This is what's lame - making an inane comment just because you don't happen to do it yourself.

I've never taken my watch off when playing, not for 40 years.  I now wear a Casio G-Shock Tough Solar that is waterproof to 200 meters (I've worn it for  a dive watch for years now, as deep as 150 feet), never needs a battery, never needs to be set (it sets itself to the Atomic clock every night), essentially never needs anything.  I don't even notice that it's there.  It certainly has no negative effect on my golf swing.  In fact, I feel undressed when I'm not wearing it.

In the 40 years that I've worn a watch on the course I've never done this.  You can't think of any other reason that a watch would be handy?  I use it for knowing where my group is for pace.  For timing ball searches during tournaments.  For anything time related without having to dig my watch or phone out of my bag.  It also eliminates any possibility of losing it or having it stolen.

Most importantly, it's for knowing when I'm getting close to the time limit set by She Who Must Be Obeyed!

I rarely wear a watch with links on the course, you always feel like you need to adjust, and well...you can't. Obviously you don't want it loose on the course, but if you get it sized tight then when you get hot on the course and your wrist expands...that just gets extremely uncomfortable.

Alligator/lizard strap though? Hell yeah. Nice & comfortable...and adjustable.

Happy wife, happy life.

I do not wear a watch while playing for the simple reason that I do not wear a watch at all, on or off the course.  When I wore a watch I wore it while playing but never noticed any problem.

It seems simple to me.  If you are used to wearing a watch and can do so without it distracting you in any way then go ahead and wear it.  If it distracts you in any way, do not wear one.  I do not think this is a one-size-fit-all situation.  And it is certainly not something that one is lame for doing, no matter which side of the debate they come down on, IMO.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

I realize many, if not most, people these days do not wear a watch as they carry their smartphones everywhere.

I have always worn a watch.  In fact, like @Fourputt , I too feel naked without my watch on.  When I play golf, I will switch out to one of my quartz watches because mechanical ones will breakdown if worn playing golf.

I guess that make me lame. :-P

So be it.  Good thing I don't follow popular trends/opinions.

That's sort of funny, because I wanted a watch specifically because I was tired of digging around in my pocket every time I wanted the time. I took it in to a shop this morning and had them take one link out and now it fit snugly such that it didn't slide around. I'll determine whether or not it bugs me while swinging when I next go to the course, however.

My phone is with me most of the time, but I never even think to use it to tell the time.  I've worn a watch since I got my first Timex when I started high school.  It is so automatic to just look at my left wrist that anything else is actually uncomfortable.  Even though I'm retired, I still have appointments and other obligations which are time sensitive, and not to have my watch is just unthinkable.

I still forget to take my phone quite often when I go out, but my watch?  It's not American Express, but I still never leave home without it.

At one time back in the dark ages, I had a problem with wearing my watch while playing golf.  I had a watch with an expansion band, and the spring tension was light enough that it slid right off my wrist and was wrapped around my wrist and the shaft grip.  The only thing that kept it from sliding all the way down the shaft and off the end was that it hit my my right hand.  I don't remember what the shot was like, but I can't imagine that it was anything to write home about.
