Am I being too obsessive over new clubs?

Got my new XR's a month ago and there's a small gap between the ferrule on 3 of them. The attached photo is as a fair description of the gap on the 3 clubs. I've tried the kettle and hot water trick on the sw in the pic to get it back in place but it won't budge and the head isn't loose either. Should I just leave it as it is and not think about it? Seems a bit silly sending them back for a cosmetic but. I'm worrying with the water that it's got between the gap and through the ferrule and will rust the shaft etc though.

Have you tried tapping them down? Use a large flat head screw driver against the top of the ferrule and lightly tap the screwdriver with a hammer. Unless the ferrules are glued in place, and they shouldn't be, you should easily close the gap. Beyond that, I really wouldn't worry about it.

Use Epoxy to reset the ferrule as I mentioned in your other thread,and they will stay in place.

If you do not epoxy them they will move up and down the shaft about 1/4 over time and eventually just slide back and forth.

But it would take several years before that would happen.

Water is not an issue and no potential of damage to the shaft, unless you would leave them in a bucket of water for a week or longer.

Normal cleaning when submersing the club will not cause any deterioration to the clubs.

Like I said before, it sucks to buy new clubs and have cosmetic problems such as loose ferrules, but it happens a lot.

Clubs are factory assembled in a highly aggressive quick timeframe, often quality is overlooked.

If your not comfortable with applying a small amount of epoxy, take them back.

Water may not be a big concern but I see no reason not to try and fix it, you could bring them to a fitter and they'll probably take care of it for a few bucks, done.

Since you asked, I think you are being a bit obsessive about it.   Like others have said, tap it down and/or glue it.   It won't easily rust even if you don't.

I know. It's just because they're my first brand new set. Going to just enjoy them and if it gets worse get them glued.

Don't worry, if the club head flies off, you can usually get it back on the way to your ball.

Seriously, though. The heads are usually put on with a generous amount of epoxy so that should seal the shaft from water. Just don't leave your clubs in the range buckets, just dip and clean.

I think half of my clubs have a gap like that at this point. Doesn't affect performance so if I can't push it back in with my hand I don't worry about it.

If the ferrules were flush on the hosels, it still wouldn't stop water getting under them anyway. Shaft tips shouldn't have been abraded right down to the steel nor high enough up the tip such that epoxy doesn't cover the abrasion. Heads should have plenty of epoxy stopping water getting to tip and up inside shaft.

Wouldn't worry about it.

If I ordered them to spec from the factory I would contact Callaway about replacing them. If I got them from EBay for less than full price I would live with them.

they were brand new bur less than they should have been. Around £50 less as I know the store owner.

Well if you know the store owner then have him make good on them. So what if it does not affect the performance. That would bother me if it was a brand new set.

I showed them the club and as it was miniscule they asked me to see how it goes and if it gets worse. If it was the head coming loose I'd kick up a fuss but as it's less than a millimeter, I don't want to complain over something which is a small gap on 3 clubs. I'm torn over what to do.

If they are the club heads coming loose (which it could be), then have the store fix the issue. The factory glue is usually a 5 minute adhesive, and is prone to failure especially if you leave the clubs in your car in the summertime. You could have a club maker or a store like Golfsmith re-glue the clubs, and they will use a longer cure epoxy which is better.

Over my many years of buying golf clubs of different brand, the only clubs that have had construction or performance issues (as in BREAKAGE) have been Callaway.  Back in the "Big Bertha" days, the graphite shafts broke on my driver and 7-wood right where the head met shaft.  The head flew OFF my 4-wood.  Also the glue that bonded irons to shaft became brittle, cracked and caused heads to fly off two of the irons.  I don't believe my irons had the 'pinned through shaft' feature to hold head on shaft.

Callaway replaced every club, (5, IIRC) free of charge, no questions asked.  Take yours back and ask for a replacement.  You'll probably be treated the same way.  No skin off the retailers nose; they will take care of it for you.
