We've all had those moments teeing off or putting near a busy street, and some miscreant in a car honks or utters a profanity, or worse yells "Fore!"

Zach had one of those moments yesterday. Perhaps he will visit his psychologist or ear doctor...

"So I'm standing over a 30 foot putt, heading into the lead, ready to kick Jordan's butt and destroy a journeyman's dream, when this non-Christian, must have been a Satanist, sets off an air cannon as I take my putter back. Well, Doc, if it wasn't for my cotton undies, it would have been a mess in my khakis. Imagine the horror on CBS, or worse, what Feherty would have said. I jumped like a little girl and ran. Don't know if I can recover. I parred the last 7 holes to miss the playoff by one. I should'a won, I was a contendah ... the SeeMore was working, I could apologize to my putting coach.  Maybe this noise in my head will go away. Doc, what do ya' think? Will that cannon in my head go away?"

Silvis, Ill. – Zach Johnson stood over a 30-foot putt on the par-3 16th hole that would have tied him for the lead at 20 under.

He took the putter back, heard something that sounded like an explosion, and jumped in the air.

“I don’t know if it was like a pipe bomb or a backfire from a boat,” Johnson said. “I don’t have any idea, but I know it was loud, and I know I was about ready to hit my putt.”

According to David Feherty on the CBS television broadcast, the sound was from an air cannon on a pontoon boat heading down the Rock River, which runs adjacent to the 16th hole.

Video inserted from youtube so it should be ready for your viewing displeasure with the cannon.

John Deere: Articles, photos and videos

Johnson regrouped enough to make his par, but he never got to 20 under. And playing his first 11 holes in 6 under Sunday, Johnson closed with seven straight pars to shoot 6-under 65, post 19 under and finish in a tie for third with Danny Lee, one shot out of a playoff for the John Deere title.

I don't understand the mindset of someone who would do that sort of thing.

Hopefully, video from different perspectives works now..

I do recall people in cars yelling "fore" in my tee shots. They were right, but that's beside the point.

As to other sports, I remember in high school, I was running around White Rock Lake preparing for a cross country race, and part of the route involved Garland Road, a busy street. I was just pounding away in the original Nike shoes for my 12.5 mile run, and one car yelled at me, and another car threw trash at me.  Maybe I wasn't running fast enough? Ah yes, 1972 was a very good year... :-D

I think it was a firework set off on the water. That pontoon boat doesn't look like hit has a big motor on it. I doubt it was big enough to backfire. You can kinda see the smoke just above the water as they flee the crime scene.

Yeah, at my course, once in a great while, a guy in a passing cars will honk or yell to disrupt a tee shot.   We live amongst idiots - or, there are a few idiots living with us.   We can't change that.  Take this forum for example.   How often we see a guy creates a user account just to post some juvenile stuff?    It's probably the same guy honking his car as he passes a golf course.

Some of the very finest people in the greater Dayton area drive down Wagner Ford Rd. Many of these people are either going to or coming from the "racino" (basically a harness racing facility with slot machines) across the street from Kittyhawk GC. For these people, honking horns and/or yelling at golfers is damn near an obligation.

Can't imagine why the better people have all moved out of the area.

That was funny none the less (his reaction that is)... Hey Zach you're not in Iraq or Syria, so it probably isn't a mortor coming your way.. Although if it was, I would suggest you dive and cover your ears and not jump around... ;)

Doesn't matter. Flight or fight is genetically hardwired. It doesn't matter if it is Disney world, something like that would either make someone freeze or someone jump out of their shoes as a gut reaction.

Honestly I didn't find it funny.

It's eye roll worthy but if it was going to happen to anybody on tour, I'm glad it happened to Zach Johnson.

Who said anything about fight or flight? It was a joke and there is no need for the face palms either.. We have some serious golfers on this site for sure.. Ease up..

One of the tee boxes on the local course is right next to the highway. It never fails to have someone honk their horn while you are in mid swing or just taking a practice one. Little do the imbeciles know that it doesn't effect my shot because it's going to do its thing no matter who is laying on or off the horn.

Why are you glad it happened to Zach Johnson?

It was not something I would do at my current age, but I'm sure I would have been in the middle of it as a juvenile.  It will be good video for Zach to show his grandkids for a good laugh.  IMO, Zack is a good guy and an ambassador for the game of golf.

    • Day 430 - 2025-12-04 Slow motion backswings (with chippy shots) with AlmostGolf balls.
    • Day 24 (4 Dec 25) - Spent about an hour working with the new 55° wedge in the backyard.  Kept all shots to under 20yds.  Big focus - not decelerating thru downswing and keeping speed up with abbreviated backswing.  Nothing like hitting a low flighted chip with plenty of check spin and then purpose to float a pitch of similar distance.
    • Day 114 12-4 Put some work in on backswing, moving the hips correctly, then feeling over to lead side. Didn't hit any balls was just focused on keeping flowy and moving better. I'll probably do another session tonight and add in some foam balls.
    • Didn't say anything about your understanding in my post.  Well, if you are not insisting on alignment with logic of the WHS, then no.  Try me/us. What do you want from us then?? You are not making sense. You come here and post in an open forum, question a system that is constructed with logic, without using any of your own and then give us a small window of your personal experience to support your narrative which at first sight does not makes sense.  I mean, if you are a point of swearing then I would suggest you cut your losses and humor a more gullible audience elsewhere. Good heavens.
