I shot an 86, so my score is improving a couple strokes each round. . . but eventually I'll plateau if I don't get my act together with my putting (struggling with 3 footers, didn't make anything out of 5-6).

I had a fairly interesting round today.

I was -1 going to the eighth hole. I hit both the 8th and 9th fairways. I hit both greens.

I three-putted both. From 40 and 60 feet.

I also hit the fourth green (a par 3) at my course and three-putted earlier in the round. Two birdies, two three-putt bogeys, four pars (two via up-and-downs, though one was because I putted from the fringe). So 7/9 GIR, 2/2 Up&Down;, 5/7 fairways hit... and 17 putts.

I had putted on the practice green where I had no dew, so I kept running putts well past the hole when we got to the course. I adjusted on the back nine, but mentally I became frayed and only managed a 39 for a round of 76.

I was sooooo close, too. I hit good shots on 8. I hit a good drive on 9. On 9 I had a putt I'd three-putt 90% of the time because I didn't hit a good wedge in (bladed it, hence the long putt).

Grrrrr.

But really, this only shows me that it's going to be quite possible for me to break par for at least nine holes this year.

Oh, and I was playing with the TaylorMade TP Black. I hit one of the longest drives I've ever hit on #6 - then hit a 3W and only had 55 yards to the pin. The hole measures 570 from where we played today. Birdie putt from 15 feet (the TP Black doesn't spin as much as the red, duh Erik) lipped out.

Oh, the two birdies... were from two feet. On three I stuck a 9-iron to two feet and on six I had to punch and run a 5-iron under a tree just in the right rough... to two feet.

Sorry for the ramble.

Got the new irons today. Took them out of the box, hit a small bucket, then took them right to the course and shot 71. Not too shabby for new clubs. I really like them. They are really solid and the distances are right on. These the first forged irons I have ever hit. I'm sold.

I shot 80 for the first time today! Unfortunately, it was on an 18 hole par 3 course. :) I choked big time on two and three for a combined 15, but I shot eight over par on the back nine. It always seems to take me atleast three holes to warm up and get comfortable. I've only been playing since December and have fallen in love. I was pretty encouraged when I read the thread about the weekend golfer's score as I shot around 100 the first time I played. That was before I kept score correctly though.

Shot my age for 9 holes yesterday. Went out on the back nine after work and shot a -5; 30.

Started eagle, birdie. Then lipped out my birdie chip on 12. Birdied 13. Missed from 12 feet for birdie on 14. Stuck my approach to 2 feet on 15. Missed from 10 feet on 16 for birdie. Good two putt par on 17. And missed from 6 feet on 18.

Should have been 6 under for sure. and possible 8 under if I didn't miss those other two makeable putts. Things are looking pretty decent for my Open qualifying.

Nine holes Sunday morning. I hit the ball reasonably well but didn't score. I have not made too many putts in a couple weeks. I just have to get on the green and practice more. My chipping was much improved. I ended up with a 46, but 9 came on a quintuple bogey after a pull hook put me in an unplayable. I came back with a Par on the next hole. Otherwise I was decent but not great.

Shot a 39-35-74 on Saturday. Couldn't get off the tee to save my life until #14. Thank god my irons saved me numerous times...even with my struggles off the tee I had 6 birdie putts inside 20 feet on the back 9. I need to make some more putts (31 total) but I was pleased to straighten things out on the back 9.

37-40 today for a 77. Accidentally posted it as a 76 at the club. Can't add, apparently.

Had the hooksies with the driver and hit some boneheaded shots at critical moments (one lead to a three-putt, derrr). But otherwise was pretty in control. Just couldn't make a putt outside of... three feet, really. My average first putt distance on the front was 16 feet and on the back, 17 feet, yet I had 33 putts.

Hit all of 3 fairways. Did hit 11/18 greens, and two of those misses were by a few inches in the fringe (or my putting stats would look even worse!).

Really rather frustrating, but I wasn't using my putter. Was using the hook-happy NC GM2-HM. Once I started forward pressing the ball stopped going so dramatically left.

After chopping it around the course today then salvaging a couple of decent holes near the end, I arrived at the last tee box (a 460 yard par 5 with o.b. right and a pond in front of the green) needing par to post up my seventh consecutive sub-90 round (my goals are modest).

Pulled my drive down the left side of the fairway about 260, then elected to lay up around the 100 yard mark because of the water short left of the green. I felt cheesy as all getout laying up from 200 yards with a gap wedge, but I was playing by myself and nobody was watching. Hit a really fine 2nd wedge up to the green from just inside the 100 yard disk, leaving around a 12 footer for birdie. It was a pretty tough sidehill putt, so all I wanted to do was lag it up within a 12 inch circle, make my par and post my 89.

I hit a very nice, soft putt up to the hole that curled off just at the last second, leaving me right around a foot, slightly uphill and with a right-to-left break, for my par and all the glory that comes with breaking 90.

Uhhh...there's always tomorrow.

Those of you who think you can't miss a one footer: the reason you think that is because you and your buddies are picking them all up.

42 Yesterday playing the blues on the South Course. Started Double-Par-Double-Double despite decent ball striking, just kept putting myself in trouble. I played even for the last 5 holes with 3 pars, 1 bird, 1 bogey and 4/5 Greens. I am hitting the ball longer and straighter than ever. I've got a good feeling about this year. This round could have easily been in the 36-38 range if it wasn't for a few feet. :p

I shot something like an 80 or something horrible. On the holes where I hit the ball well I couldn't putt to save my life. I have no feel for speed right now. None. 25-footers going 5 feet past. It's just insane for me right now. Insanely bad. I'm putting like a 30-handicapper.

A round with some great drives and approaches to the green (in my eyes at least). Took 50 strokes to get to 18 greens.

Shot a 100 (most putts ever for me)!

Had to unwrap the putter from around a tree...

Very frustrating - if it's not one thing, it's another.

Here's to another day with slightly less putts

Believe me, it was a classic performance. Twice I had birdie putts, where I left the hole with a double.

The other three guys pretty much left me alone as I was in a delightful mood from Hole # 1 onwards.

The funny thing is that my putting has been okay - nothing spectacular, with 2 or 3 three putts per round. But, Sunday was memorable.

Remember my question about lessons? Not soon enough.

Played in a member-guest today. Drove two par 4s (well, the front bunker on one). Sand shot to four feet, sunk the putt. The other I two-putted for a birdie. Started on 15... played it poorly. 16 was one of the par 4s. 17 I parred. 18 I drove and birdied. I parred or bogeyed most of the holes until the 6th where I felt something different in my swing - I was hunched over a bit. Hit the ball beautifully from there on out.

Two best net scores per hole of our foursome counted. We shot 133 - 11 under. Winning score was only 10 better.

I hit every putt but one exactly where I wanted and with exactly the speed I wanted. And I didn't make a putt over four feet. None of us in the group did. Well, ONE putt over five feet went in. ONE. We were reading greens at a kindergarten level or something!

On the last hole, 14, a par 3, I stuck a 7-iron to 6'9" (lipped out the putt, yes) and won a box of NXT Tours. I traded them in for credit and I'll get a hat or something.

No idea what I shot. But my score counted on at least 12 of the holes...

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
