If I was a player, I'd want paid.

I'd give it to a charity.

I think the players do get money donated to charity.

A compromise was reached whereby the PGA of America donates $200,000 per player, with half going to charity and the other half to a college development programme in each American player’s name.

Much better solution than paying the players, I too was unaware of this arrangement.

Probably the next time we'll see Tiger on a golf course.

Tiger Woods has been named a vice captain for the 2016 Ryder Cup. Woods, along with Jim Furyk and Steve Stricker, will serve under captain Davis Love III at Hazeltine GC next fall. Tom Lehman was previously announced as a vice captain.

"They said, 'We will do anything you ask us to do to make this Ryder Cup team successful,'" Love said of his assistants.

Woods, who turns 40 in December, is currently recovering from two off-season back surgeries. According to Love, though, this doesn't mean Woods plans on sitting out all of 2016.

"He wants to play and be a vice captain. He wants to be the leader of his group, this pod system," Love said. "Tiger wants to be a leader of the group, but he wants to be on the golf course. He doesn't want to be a general sitting in a room. He wants to be in the battle."

This made my day. Not because it is the next time I will see Tiger on a course, but more because I think this a great decision for Tiger and also for golf as a whole.

I say no to Tiger as vice captain. It means he thinks there is a big chance he will not make it as  a player. I want him to think otherwise.

I also think his chances are small, but as a tiger he needs to charge!

He's said he's committed to being a playing vice captain (one would think Jim Furyk may find himself in a similar position; he just made the Presidents Cup team a few months ago). Davis is going to have FIVE vice captains, so… he can spare one or two to playing duties.

Tiger's apparently taken it pretty seriously and has said he wants to do anything he can to help the team win.

I thought this was great news.  I am looking forward to seeing how he does in this type of role.

Seems like some are surprised Tiger would want to do this but I think it's pretty simple. Rather than watch the Ryder Cup on TV, he wants to have an active role and help his team win the cup back. As we know he's an extremely competitive person. Also, Tiger is someone a lot of the players look up to so having a guy like that rooting you on can't hurt.

Rory's reaction:

Talking after his opening round in the Race To Dubai finale, Rory McIlroy naturally wonders about Tiger's physical well-being if the legendary golfer is already committing himself to cart shuttling duties instead of leaving open the possibility that the 40-year-old-to-be could make the team.

PANews%20BT_P-d8d50a96-ad9c-4bfe-9a35-3cFrom an unbylined Belfast Telegraph wire story:

Told of the news after his opening round in the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai, a visibly surprised McIlroy said: " I don't know what to think about that, I really don't.

"It's great that he wants to help the US team in any way that he can, and if that's not in a playing capacity, then as a vice-captain. Just sort of makes me think what really his health is like and how he feels like he's going to come back from that.

" I'd rather see him on the course at Hazeltine but if not, at least he'll be there and it will be a good addition for them."

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
