I had a dentist appointment this morning and arrived early, since they have an ample supply of Golf Magazines. One specific article caught my eye, since I have been thinkingabout and working on the various elements of the takeaway and downswing. This artlcle featured Jason Day speaking of swing flow. He breaks down his takeway to Hands first... then Arms.... then Torso,,,  then Hips, as 1-2-3-4. Then, reverses this for the downswing...  4-3-2-1... Hips, then Torso. then Arms, then Hands. I know many have stated the same thing, but this one of the first times it has clicked for me and yet is very symetrical. Just thought I would share. I hope it helps others.

Not a big fan of that. It may work for Jason Day (but he may not even actually do what he feels), but it's unlikely to work for the majority of golfers. Feels are very personal, and even then, they often change from day to day or week to week.

maybe you could expand a bit on that thought so we can learn more on what to look for and what to avoid. You are the pro and I am just trying to learn the game. One thing that I did notice was that Jaskn has a huge shoulder turn compared with minimal hip turn (the last element engaged in the swing) at the top of his swing to get maximum coil. But I and other could benefit more from your thoughts here. Thanks in advance.

Depends if the movements you are doing allow you to achieve the 5 keys consistently. A good instructor will know what to leave alone and what to fix.

The best example is always Furyk. He does some funky stuff but he achieves all of the 5 keys and is very consistent at it.

Jason could do a bit more hip turn. I think he sways too much in his golf swing.

Of course the guy just blitzed the PGA Tour in the last few months. So he clearly gets away with it.

Jason turns his hips, too. More than you probably think.

Also, with the driver, there's less importance on Keys #1-3 because the ball is teed up.

This is great information! Thank so much for explaining it. This really helps a lot! I am relatively new to the 5sk method, so I appreciate it.

As Erik said, it probably won't work for average golfers. For me, I have to concentrate on turning my shoulders first, if it feels like my swing starts with my hands or arms, I'm in trouble.

Gawd, I've got to feel it first in my feet or the hips won't turn enough, and the arms too much.

Well, I guess by the responses here that some things work better for others and not necessarily. So, can we say that we each have to find our own "magic" given that we adhere to the 5 keys?

Anyway, I did a little experimenting this evening in the backyard and just tried the takeaway with hands (keeping a steady head, of course)... and I noticeed that the P2 position was consistent through each swing and my shoulders stayed relaxed, which is something my swing coach had me working on.... my right shoulder would carry a bit too much tension. For me, the learning is the fun part about golf.

Aside note, I been adopting one of Jason preshot routine. I hold the driver in front of my body and press the meaty part of heel pad of my left hand against the grip  as though Im holding the handle of a fishing rod. Seems to get me into the correct grip position. Then when Im at address position I lift up the driver with my left hand like Im holding luggage and this gets me to feel how much  'squeeze" I need to feel in my left hand when I contract my left forearm. This is for anticipation for the amount of pressure I feel when I drive upwards through the ball off the tee.

Interesting idea about the grip setup, I adopted Adam Scott's routine by setting the face of driver at the right toe facing the target and gripping the left hand to ensure a consistent strong grip. I like the idea about the squeeze feel. Thanks for the tip.

    • As a supporter of the European team even though I chose to live in the US, this is kind of good news. I'm pretty close to Bethpage, but won't be going at these prices. Neither will the crazy drunk NY sports fans who would have made this a very difficult place to play as a Euro. The tickets will go to the city types who are entertaining clients and don't care about the money. Many of them are going to sit there and watch, not get all raucous. I am not dumb enough to believe that this is going to be like a Sunday afternoon stroll in the park for the Euros, but I think it will be significantly more subdued as a result of the prices. Even at $250 I would probably have been watching on the TV anyway so no real skin in the game.
