Ok, lets look at this another way, @BlackDiamondPar5. You're in a match with a someone. On a day when, for whatever reason, most people shoot above average scores for their index. This guy beats you by shooting 7 strokes below his index. You've got no problem with that?

This exact thing happened to me, a 7 HCP shoots a -1 to beat me. Of course I know it's possible, still was annoying.

I've never understood folks who want a higher handicap and argue for it. Oh I get that there is money involved sometime, sure, but works both ways.  I lost tonight, (won the gross, lost the net, giving up 3 strokes). Oh well, should I have argued to raise my handicap? :-)  The only time I really care if if the winner (due to handicap) wants to brag about it.

So, @BlackDiamondPar5, how is a handicap index that drops to 12.5 after you shoot a 5.6 and a 9.0 (IIRC) differential “unfair”?

Especially given that we agree it’s about your “potential”?

Shooting 7 diff below HCP?? Sandbaggers be running wild in the woods. They must be crushed with impunity. 😂

Oh not, not just 7 strokes below, his Exceptional Score differential was more than TEN strokes below his index.  To me, the system was made just for performances like that.

Seems most of the responses back to me are opinions, perhaps those just blindly accepting what's been given by the USGA and whs.  Maybe some don't understand data and statistics enough to ask questions. Maybe some are just interested in carrying water for the USGA.

Perhaps those of us who have direct experience with USGA people, who see how seriously they take their job, how much thought and effort go into each detail, perhaps we've learned to trust the USGA to do a good job.  Is that "blind acceptance"?  I don't think so, its acceptance based on knowledge of the intelligence and integrity of the USGA folks.

Now its possible that if I was to review all of the data that the USGA, CONGU, EGA, Golf Australia, South Africa Golf, Argentina Golf evaluated, I might come up with a slightly different way to correct for Exceptional Scores.  But my choice would be somewhat arbitrary, any choice would be somewhat arbitrary, even your choice would be somewhat arbitrary.  The general methodology is sound, using full 1-stroke "correction" increments is a very logical simplification, applying the correction to each score in your current history is sound in that the impact diminishes with each new score you post.  Are the break points used, differentials of 7 and 10 strokes below the HI somewhat arbitrary?  Of course they are, and I'm fine with that.

@BlackDiamondPar5 at this point you have a choice to make.  You can keep a handicap, and live by the systems methods and rules, or you can simply stop using it.  You've said it several times, you're not going to change your mind without seeing all of the data, and that's not going to happen.

Unfortunately, a small percent of players who wish for a higher handicap choose a third option.

I'm not one to accuse anyone of sandbagging without a good bit of evidence.  He did post his low scores, he simply doesn't like the way the system treated those low scores.

OK, this just happened to me yesterday. I was sitting at a 6.4 HI index (previous low had been 4.9). I shot a 65 from 6,000 yard tees, which was a -3.6 differential. Round of a lifetime. Shot a few 70's before at a par 70 course, but then just obliterated a score of 70 out of nowhere. When I posted the score there was a note about a pending index of 4.8. So I check my GHIN today and it says 2.8!!! Looks like it revised my last 20 differentials down by 2.0 each. I have had this GHIN for about 7 years and have played a lot of golf.

I had the issue about 5 years ago when I joined a club and it had small, elevated, hard-as-a-rock greens and my index got soft capped from maybe a 5.3 up to a 10.

Looks like the odds of me shooting 10 strokes below my index is like 83,000 to 1. Getting a hole in one is supposedly like 12,500 to 1. I do not have a hole in one to my credit. I definitely prefer having the round of 65 for sure.

Great playing!!  As @iacas said, you went low enough to earn the Exceptional Score Reduction.  If your diff was 7 strokes below your Index, you get the last 20 differentials reduced by 1.0, if you're 10 strokes lower, the reduction is 2.0.  That's in addition to the normal calculation based on the best 8 of the past 20.  The "mechanics" are intended to allow the impact to diminish with time, as those 20 "reduced" differentials get deleted from your calculation as you post new scores.

That's right... Do more better, pay more higher taxes! 😂. Exactly why I haven't reported any of my under par rounds. 😜

All kidding aside, congratulations are in order. Well done! Was it a clean (bogey free) round?

    • Day 430 - 2025-12-04 Slow motion backswings (with chippy shots) with AlmostGolf balls.
    • Day 24 (4 Dec 25) - Spent about an hour working with the new 55° wedge in the backyard.  Kept all shots to under 20yds.  Big focus - not decelerating thru downswing and keeping speed up with abbreviated backswing.  Nothing like hitting a low flighted chip with plenty of check spin and then purpose to float a pitch of similar distance.
    • Day 114 12-4 Put some work in on backswing, moving the hips correctly, then feeling over to lead side. Didn't hit any balls was just focused on keeping flowy and moving better. I'll probably do another session tonight and add in some foam balls.
    • Didn't say anything about your understanding in my post.  Well, if you are not insisting on alignment with logic of the WHS, then no.  Try me/us. What do you want from us then?? You are not making sense. You come here and post in an open forum, question a system that is constructed with logic, without using any of your own and then give us a small window of your personal experience to support your narrative which at first sight does not makes sense.  I mean, if you are a point of swearing then I would suggest you cut your losses and humor a more gullible audience elsewhere. Good heavens.
    • I have access to far more data (including surveys and polls) than you do with your anecdotes. I mean this as plainly and literally as possible: you’ve demonstrated that you do not. They would, one way or the other.
