What's your recommendation for a high quality driver shaft?

It's a really complicated question without a good answer unless you had something very specific you were looking to achieve (weight / launch / etc). Go get fit by a professional. A blanket recommendation would be worse than useless. As a high handicap myself, it's always been a non-priority in my club buying.

Whichever fits your golf swing.

Honestly, unless you are a PGA tour player or a guy who just likes to shell out money then don't bother looking at $350+ golf shafts. Unless you are that good you the money isn't worth the benefit.

Really, all golf shafts today are very good quality.

I would say high end models would be,

Fujikura
Graphite Design
Oban

I am probably missing a few others.

Most of the shafts made by Mitsubishi and Fujikura are considered a quality shafts. My son is using a Diamana shaft and used to use a Kai'li.

Ping makes good shafts for their own clubs.

UST and Adila make their shafts ;) They just tell them the spec's they want and how they want them made.

The UST Mayima Proforce shafts are a good value. I currently use a Bi-Matrix shaft by Grafalloy (it has very low spin for me).

Really though, get fit. Shafts are such an individual thing, especially as you change clubs. What worked best in my last driver didn't have low enough spin in my current driver, hence my search for an extremely low-spinning shaft for my swing and clubhead combination (I got the G30 right before the LS Tec version was released). Go get fit and you'll know what characteristics you need in a shaft.t

I got fitted for a shaft a couple of months back.  The specs that we talked about were:

Flex:  Stiff

Weight:  55-60

Torque:  Around 4.0

Low/Mid Launch

I was looking for quality brands.  With shafts, do you get what you pay for?  There are a lot of expensive shafts.  Being a teacher, I have to stay within a budget.  I can't afford a $250-$350 shaft.

Thanks for all the feedback.

My feeling is that above $100 you get a small return on the investment. Most things are like that.

Watch some Rick Shiels or Mark Crossfield videos. I know one of them tried out a $1700 shaft which is only marginally better than a $350 shaft which in turn is only a little better than a $100 one.

Where to find shafts at a decent price? Golfworks has discontinued shafts on sale, eBay has shafts - need to be careful if they were tipped, adapters can be changed, and some who buy new drivers put the shafts on sale. I have found great deals on callawaygolfpreowned.com when they have a sale.

I have a Fuji Speeder 565 Stiff, Aldila Blue Attas 55 Stiff (made for Callaway - slightly soft) and a Project X 55 - all like new and available with Callaway Dual Cog Adapter. But they may not fit. I like the Fuji best of those three.

At the same time, it helps to know if you need a stiffer butt, midsection, or soft tip... since you've been fit for flex, I assume they've taken your tempo into account. But if you load early, release late, that will help you.

It's complicated.

But if you are a regular Joe, some of the stock shafts on most OEM drivers are made for a wide variety of golfers. Not the best fit but most of us are not that consistent.

Mostly with price you are talking about feel. It's difficult to make a very stout golf shaft that doesn't feel like a board.

in terms of numbers on a launch monitor. There's not enough difference to warrant the cost.

UST and Adila make some very good quality sub $150 driver shafts.

I normally find success with Fujikura made-for shafts.  I think they are true-to-spec and good at killing spin in the clubs I have found them in.  Ping shafts are interesting in that they are a proprietary design with counterbalance and normally work pretty well.  The only bad shafts I have found are the $10 noodles that Taylormade puts in their drivers.

I think he meant the older ones like in the original burners?

The latest TM drivers have really nice shafts in them. The fact that they cost $499 is probably to offset the added cost of the shafts?

If you know your specs already, I suggest looking at 300yards.com and perusing their large inventory. For every expensive option there is a less expensive one; previous models, etc.

They ship quick and will answer email within a day. They also have adapters for all of the major brands; a variety of grip options as well.

I've enjoyed every purchase.

Bumping this up because I have a question.

I'm looking to buy a hybrid and looking on Ebay I found the hybrid I want.  I found two different sellers and the only difference in the hybrids is the shaft.  The shaft are:

  • Fujikura Motore Speeder HB 8.8 Tour Spec Stiff
  • Mitsubishi Diamana S+ Blue 70 Graphite Stiff

Is there a difference between the two or are they pretty much interchangeable and it'd be more of a situation of feel?

Thanks!

I do personally really like the diamana blue shafts, that would be my recommendation there.

And there it is, The problem with shaft flex! Unlike other "hard" measurables like loft angle, lie angle, length, club head speed, and so so forth, shaft "flex" remains an elusive critter! The shaft manufacturers have their own ideas of what shaft flex should be, and they guard those ideas jealously. Thus, there is no sharing among the shaft manufacturers, much to the detriment of we golfers!

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
