The last couple of years watching him on the Golf Channel. He never really bothered me that much. For some reason all of a sudden I just want to stomp on his face. I can't really explain why I did not feel that way before?

He does come across as a bit smug at times, but I have no problem with Chamblee. He's as good as anyone on the Golf Channel. I know some don't like him because he's perceived as being anti-Tiger, but not being afraid to offer criticism hardly means that you're out to get someone. If he wasn't doing a good job, he'd have been let go long ago...IMHO. :-)

I think he's very knowledgable and often has very good analysis to offer. Unfortunately, he's also very smug and grating. Count me in the "Punch him in his smarmy face" camp.

Since when is he suddenly some sort of guru? I followed golf for years and never remember him on the tour. Now he is criticyzing and analyzing swings? I need someone to at least win a major before I credit his opinion.

That's silly. How many major winners can you name who are great instructors? Johnny Miller and Nick Faldo are major winners but their swing analysis are gibberish most of the time.

Yeah because Faldo and Miller are so great at analyzing swings

You don't need to have won a major...or even have played on tour... to be able to offer cogent commentary on somebody's swing. On that basis you wouldn't pay any attention to respected instructors like Butch Harmon, David Leadbetter, or Jim McLean...or your local PGA pro, for that matter.

I don't hear anyone claiming that Chamblee is some sort of guru. But he does know the game, and he's not afraid to offer honest opinions. I have no problem with that.

I think he's mostly full of shit, though I do find him charming.

You know the state of golf commentary is bad when the better ones aren't likable.

I would be happy if they would give yardages and club selection. That's all. But please leave the mics on the tees open all the time

It could be subliminal, I've always enjoyed him as a golf commentator but find the recent Arizona/Scottsdale commercials to be a real turn off. Maybe that's it?  I like him behind the desk but the guy in those ads is an asshole.

I'm kind of mystified that Golf Channel lets their already well-paid (?) "journalists" shill for anything. A book for a 'golf writer' I understand.

Brandel is capable of saying some golf-savvy things, but delivers them a little self-importantly for me. Sometimes I appreciate what he's saying and sometimes I want to hit mute. I do appreciate that his willingness to invite controversy occasionally as that is more interesting for viewing than tried and true pablum.
