Interesting. Looks like a much more refined version of the I's. Similar weight insert but much cleaner looking overall. I'm not tempted in the slightest given my need extra forgiveness, but these look like they are most likely more forgiving that going to a straight MB or even normal CB designed blade. I'm looking forward to a review by someone here in the future.

I am really intrigued by these clubs. I suspect Ping will push the forgiveness as much as possible with the blade design. I am really liking the simple look to them. I hope the top-line is slim and it has minimal offset. These will be on my radar when they come out.

I like them quite a bit. I hope they continue to give this segment of the market some attention, because they tend to make good products when they do,

That is a pretty slick looking club. It's a shame I already got new irons last year.

I like the look of those as they seem to have a bit of the Glide wedge thing going on which is nice.  Just having a hard time imagining how they could be that much better than S55 or i series irons that are out there now.  In any case I'm a big fan of Ping irons so no doubt I'll be in the queue to give them a hit when they finally reach the stores over here!

I think these are prime for @Golfingdadto test and see how them compare with the i25's.

I almost pulled the trigger on the Ping i's this year. Then this guy I know at Golfsmith gave me a bit of a heads up that Ping would be coming out with an iron set to replace the s-series. I can't remember who he heard it from. He was right on this one.

They will not be comparable with the i-series.

G models = Super Game Improvement. Ping's bread and butter club for the high handicap golfer. (HDCP 13+)
i models = closer to a better players club, but still retains some game improvement tech. I would put this in the scratch to mid-handicap range. (HDCP 0 to 15)
S models = better player to tour player iron (Pro's to 10)

That is my guestimate on what the handicap range feels like when I look at the clubs.

I suspect they will be tweaked the clubs with the input from their tour players. They probably will be a tad longer than the S55.

I loooooooved the G's when we hit them in Phoenix, so I slightly tweaked your ranges. ;)

I guess I was speculating that they will be marketed as more forgiving than the S55 and possibly longer, which is what made me think they are then edging into i territory. Plus I thought a lot of Ping's tour players are using i series anyway.

Is there any chance that this will make a back up set of S55s a bit cheaper or will they just get withdrawn from sale when the i Blades come out?

Most likely anything out there will be what ever is left in stock at that retail store. That also means you probably will not be able to get custom fit for S55's.

Ping is pretty awesome in that if you own S55's and lets say you break a club. You can send them the club and they will make you a new one to match your set. That is the cool thing about retaining all the molds for their casting process.

Most likely you will see S55 go on sale as retail stores try to sell any left over stock.

I would think they would release them in the fall, or did you mean there are no plans for a public release at all?

The S55 were release in 2013

The S56 were released in 2010

I suspect they will be released this fall or early next year.

PING has updated their website

http://ping.com/clubs/ironsdetail.aspx?id=21292

Here is the difference in specs. It looks like the i-Blade is roughly the same lofts. A tad stronger in some of the irons, and weaker in the others. I suspect that is for slight changes in CG location and getting consistent launch conditions. The length is a 1/4th an inch longer per iron except for the PW. The swing weight is heavier. The bounce is slightly higher. I would suspect these irons to play very similar to the S55's.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
