Eager to try this out. Feel the backswing take twice as long. Thanks for the tip David Wedzik.

If the backswing is to take twice as long then how is it decelerating?  That's 1 count 2 count and then for the downswing to be a 1 count it would be faster wouldn't it..  I thought it would be more like feel that the downswing takes twice as long as the backswing..  Am I missing something?

Clearly. ;-)

With a longer backswing you'll be forced to swing forward slowly. People who "hit" tend to have short backswings, then accelerate from there.

Expanding on what @iacas said ... I think the answer would be extremely obvious once you tried it out.  But think about it ... if you take a twice as long backswing as you would normally for a certain length putt and you didn't decel, then you'd hit the ball 9 miles past the hole.

Furthermore, I think you're confusing the "twice as long" part.  He's not saying the backswing should be twice as long as the downswing, but rather, twice as long as your "old" backswing.

Hopefully, that clears it up. :)

To add to this: I think "let gravity start the downswing". I do a long slower backstroke and get the feeling that I am not moving the club on the downswing.

I have to say thank you for this. I used this while playing today and I had 32 putts total. I had probably 3 or 4 putts that were inches from the hole and holed several of longer putts.

Cool to hear. We've been using this technique for awhile.

If you still struggle with this, swing to the second or third longest coin, but still try to hit the ball a short distance and finish at the first or second coin on the follow-through.

Putting has been one of the few things I haven't put much thought into outside of finding a putter. That said, I wish I had caught this tip a long time ago. This was super simple to implement immediately and see results, as you know that's what I love to see.

This is something the broomstick is teaching me. It's heavy. It's teaching me a rhythm on the putting stroke. I can feel the the natural pendulum movement of the club. I've just varied the length of the backstroke depending upon the length of the putt or the uphill or downhill lie and let the club head come through at its natural speed. My misses have been mostly because I misread the line. I'm getting closer to the hole than last year.

It's stopped my short pop stroke, which while it worked on very slow greens, doesn't do well on the faster greens.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
