You use your putter at least 30 strokes a round. Why wouldn't you spend money on what matters the most.

Well ... I don't think it's what matters most for me.

1) As a hack, getting to the green is a bigger part of the struggle. There is a much bigger upside for me in buying new clubs.

2) As I said, my personal golf budget is very limited. The next purchase may have to be shoes. The heals on my current pair are about to give out.

3) At the end of it, I don't understand how some $250 putter is going to do anything that the two putters I already have don't do. It's a flat block on the end of a shaft.

The idea of a putter fitting makes some sense to me, but that's so far out of my price range it isn't worth thinking about.

Beyond the benefits of an Edel custom fitting you seem confident that the putters you own are right for you.  I spent a fair amount of money buying putters that provided me that confidence.  Ironically it wasn't one of the more expensive Scotty Cameron putters I own but a lower priced, used Odyssey Tank Cruiser.

I still plan to get fit for an Edel one day but there's no one on Long Island that I'm confident will do a good job so I'd prefer to spend a few days in PA to get Aimpoint training and fitted by Erik.

It may be a flat piece on the end of a stick but can you aim it? Is it weighted properly? (Budget stuff aside of course.)

As anyone who has been around this game for a while, putters are so personal and can fall in and out of favor so fast that it can make your head spin.  Regardless of the mental/confidence side, for me it is all about the backswing.  I know right away when I move the putter back.  I can tell if it has the right weighting and feel by how steady and straight it goes.  If it wavers or has any twist on the backswing I know that I'm toast and there is little chance I will be able to hit it where I want... which sometimes is a blessing in disguise.

I have a cheap mallet putter that works for me.  If you find a cheap one that works for you, you're set... even if it does not last forever as we all change and lose some steadiness as life goes on.  I know that I can no longer keep a blade steady enough.

If you can't find the right one off the rack, it is probably cheaper in the long run to get fit.  I would think that getting fit for the right putter that has some ability to make adjustments, and understanding how those adjustments impact your stroke, is the best scenario as you go through life.

I guess this is where the old saying "never sell or give away a putter" comes from. If what you're using goes sour, you'll have something in your closet that will work!

My last round of golf which I played 9 holes, I drained 3 putts from 30+ yards with my cheapo putter. My neighbor could verify that for any doubters out there

BTW - whenever I visit the sporting goods stores, I take a bit of time testing out some of those fancy dancey, over-priced putters, and I can honestly say they don't impress me at all.

Same with another comment, 30+ yards, those are some huge greens.  And if you are making 3 - 20-30 foot putts a round, you are a better putter than just about everyone else on the planet.

Didn't say I make three of those every round. I only said that I made three on my last round. I do however seem to drain more than my share of 20 - 30 yd putts with my cheapo putter.

If we don't buy fancy putters, how else will we let others know that we have small penises? Oh wait, that's drivers.....

You are also the guy who birdies one third of the time from 70 yards away or something on that short hole right?-So how are you a 19 handicapper again because 19s that I know are more likely to three putt from 30 feet than make it.

You said the 20-30 yd putts again, I'm assuming you mean 20-30 foot putts.

Yes feet, thank you for correcting that oversight or typo on my part.

    • I am a huge numbers guy and if a number can be applied to something, I want to know what it is.  Even in golf, I will pace off short chips as I have a 10 yard, 20 yard, and 30 yard shot whereas I take the club back a certain distance for each.  I have heard the comparison to basketball players that they do not know their exact distance to the basket, they just use their eye sight and adjust which I know a lot of golfers do as well when within a certain distance to the pin.  My question is, what is that distance for you?  I was at the range today and was hitting wayward  balls to a flag that I had no idea what it's exact distance was, I estimate that I was at times as close as 40 yards and as far away as 70 yards.  I was amazed at how accurate I was having not known the distance to the flag.  Temps me to not use my range finder within say 70 yards and go by look and feel.  What say you?
    • Well, it was yesterday but I shot an 88 at Lake Park GC in Lewisville, TX.
    • PXG Orlando, other locations I'm sure its the same, offers a full bag fitting for 25 bucks which is applied to purchase if you are a veteran or active duty, etc. Unfortunately I like my Titleist's.
    • Latest rumor is Clarkson, May and Hammond will have a new team on LIV.
    • That's not just sandbagging, that's cheating. Under Rule 3.3 for posting most likely scores, for example if there was a 2 foot putt for par, one can only take one extra stroke from what they lie, meaning par in that instance, not bogey. I didn't check the other instances but you can.
