Hi all, first time posting. Basically looking some advice.

Bought a new set of wilson staff irons 2 years ago after being custom fitted for them in the local American Golf store.

About a month after i got them, the head flew off the 4 iron upon striking the ball from the fairway. Returned it to get repaired.

A few months later the exact same thing happened the same club. The store arranged for the whole set to get sent off to be checked.

Then just on Saturday past, the same thing happened to my pitching wedge. I returned to store yet again and they've sent the whole set off again.

My issue is that I've got zero confidence in the clubs. What can i do in this situation? I'm not in the position of splashing out on a whole new set of irons.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Graphite or steel shafts?

Did the shaft actually break or did the head become loose and slip off?

Where did the shaft break (if it actually broke)?  Where the shaft enters the club head?

How the clubs broke is important as @bkuehn1952 points out, did the head fly off or did the shaft break.  If the head just flew off, it could be how you stored the clubs caused the clubs to expand and contract which compromised the adhesive used to hold the club head on.

The steel shafts actually broke. Between the black 'collar' and the club head itself. So there was about an inch or 2 if the shaft still inside the club head.

Have you ever dropped the clubs or had them fall of a carriage?

Or slammed them into the ground or a tree? Helicoptered your clubs ? Hit roots or rocks

That's the most common breaking point. The edge of the hosel can pinch the shaft a little if installed improperly and it will wear out quickly. A steep angle of attack and deep divots with the irons will make things worse.

Sounds like a factory defect unless you play on courses with really hard ground and take huge divots.

Absolutely don't have any bad temper. It's a pet hate of mine.

Each time they've broken, I've been in the fairway and i don't take a divot. I'm more of a 'sweeper'.

I'm just frustrated as there's no obvious explanation and I'm left without my clubs for the next few weeks.

I agree, going "clubless" for any extended period of time is tough, especially at the start of summer.  Since there is no pattern, it probably is a manufacturer's defect.  Either a bad batch of shafts or the shafts were improperly inserted into the hosel/socket.

At least when the clubs come back, it will be a bit like Christmas in June.

That will teach you not to buy Chinese made clubs at a store with the name "America" in it... :-P

Thanks for the replies. What I'm thinking is what do I do going forward?

Do I just accept that I might break a club every now and then?

As for buying from a store with the word 'american' in it, American Golf and Nevada Bobs seem to be the two biggest golfing goods chains in the UK. Should I be avoiding these places?

Haha no, I was just being facetious.

Yeah, i thought that. Actually just got a phone call from the store. They're refunding me the full amount that i paid 2 years ago and I've to call into store to have a look at new clubs.

Really impressed by this. They're going to resolve the issue with Wilson Staff themselves.

Nice. Glad to hear the store will do that for you.

Have to admit, it is a bit funny to an American that a leading golf retailer in the UK would call itself American Golf.

That's what I thought. I would have been surprised to see those stores there...

Well I guess it really is Christmas in June.

Now the quest begins for that next set of irons.

Have fun!

Good for you! And good for them, as well. It's nice to see a retailer take customer satisfaction seriously.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
