This game is so weird. So, so weird. I just played yesterday with my grandfather. Identical weather conditions, and a brand new course to me. We played 9 holes (it's a 9 hole course). They don't have a driving range and we skipped the putting green and their greens are a different grass than I'm used to. We just jumped on the first tee box and let 'er rip. I hit a major pull and said I'll hit another, hit a major push fade. Both ended up being fine in the left and right rough. I knew it was going to be "one of those days"

Turns out, I shot a 42 (par 36). Including hitting a shot into a cross creek (and taking my penalty) because I had (was given) the wrong yardage. I gotta trust my wife's grandfather if he's gunna let me play with him lol. I lasered it after I hit it and he was 30 yards off lol.

So, I was fearful that my game was about to go to crap and have to grind it back out but actually it felt almost effortless and very trusting of my swing yesterday and it paid off. I think the fact that it was more effortless was because we used a cart, which I'm not used to. So I didn't have nearly the fatigue that I normally do walking. Maybe I need to exercise more :)

My bad days are high 90s - haven't broken 100 in a few years.     So that's measurable improvement considering worst case golf

This thread has actually made me feel better.  As of late my bad days are horrible.   I am cursed/blessed with a club head speed in the upper 120's low 130's so when things are going bad.. they go really bad.  I have been working on gearing down.

Sometimes I get to the driving range and it feel like my limbs were stitched onto my body and I can hardly make contact. It tends not to be as bad if I'ma actually playing on the course.

You guys make me feel like I'm the most inconsistent golfer on TST.  Several times a year, I go out thinking I have a reasonable chance at 80 and ended with a 105.  This usu happens on a course w/ a lotta forced carries and OB....if I pick up a some swing flaw that day, it's not unusual to see me on the teebox hitting 5 (after 2 OB's).  And these same courses are often the nicer onces, with stimp running 9+, where i have many 3-putts.

I'm a streaky golfer tho, taking 1-3 month breaks multiple times a year.

For me it is stiffness. Sometimes my body just stiffens up during a round. It seems to happen more in rounds where we wait due to slow play.  I can really affect my game.

Anything in the 90's for me, is bad in my mind. I get down on myself shooting 85 -89 but it's much easier to get over it vs the 90's

The last really bad day: 95 at a 70.3/122 course that was playing like a 135-140. Fairways were patchy but not completely horrible first cut was 2-3 inches and regular rough was 5-7 inches. Driving was not stellar and was frequently a few yards off the fairway in deep rough. You paid dearly for missing the fairway.

Greens were also hard and fast. Had a few balls bounce 4-5 feet up and off the green into extremely undesirable lies. The wind was blowing 20 mph gusts and stayed at 10-15 mph most of the round. It was a trial, tiring and a bad day

How so? Most people responded with bad days being pretty bad. :-P

This is pretty normal for me as well, but it's my short game that's horrific, even if my long game is kind of bad.

It's strange that I usually end up doing better on the forced carry and OB shots and worse on the of wide open ones. All my over 200+ yard approaches to near greens are from terrible tee shots.

Yeah, seasonal, kind of like my son. However, when he's on he hits quite a few decent shots to get him into the mid single digits.

My 'really bad' is more ball-striking than scoring.  I can go a full 18 hole round and not hit ONE SINGLE flush shot that turns out well and still keep it in the 90s.  Sometimes I can hit the ball great all round and miss putts that are usually in the 50% make range and shoot mid-to-high 80s.

Even beating the ball around from tee to green for an entire 18-hole round, I can still realy upon my good short game to keep me under 100.  Something like a total case of the shanks would have to show up for that to happen.

I'm attributing some (but not sure how much) of this to it being the first day I actually carried my golf bag. I forgot to put my cart in the car that morning. So I was a little more tired, especially on 7-9.

My bad days look a lot like yours. I will say that typically shoot 4-5 shots worse when I carry my bag versus when I ride. My guess is that late in the round my back muscles tire from the hunched over walking and weight of the bag. I make some pretty bad swings once this happens.

I can go from 79-96. Good round high 70's to low 80's. Normal mid 80's. Bad 90-95. Occasionally I blow up to a 95+.
