Seems every day I'm reading about a new kidnapping in Rio, it's got to be scary for the athletes knowing that they and their families could be at risk.

(Almost) nobody cares about watching amateurs play in stuff.

People don't even watch the U.S. Amateur much. Some of the higher level PGA Tour events outrank the viewership numbers of the U.S. Am.

Thank you for throwing in the "Almost". I think its a shame no American will ever again feel the thrill of the US Hockey teams win at Lake Placid. I simply don't care to see the pros compete in another event. I enjoy watching Cape Cod league baseball, the Paw Sox and even the grinder golf tours on TV now and then.

I like minor league ball too, but they're still 'pros' even if not highly paid. 'Grinder golf tours'? Do you mean Web.com? If so, that's pro too.

Just read a short report that 4 (?) people have contracted the Zika Viris some where near Miami. These folks were bitten by local bugs, and had not traveled out of the country.  Health officials are warning that this is just not a Florida issue, but now a national issue. Other warnings are the same for pregnant women, sexual transmission, and folks who plan on having a family. Now, how this impacts pro golf tournaments, in areas infested with these infected critters remains to be seen. Most American PGA sites are much cleaner than Rio. Time will tell I suppose.

golfers are puling out most certainly because they dont comply to anti drug rules of the olympics. this is new matter to deal with for golfers. golf standards and controls are much lower on the ET or PGA versus the olympics.

the zika virus has a good back to support this withdraw communication.

end of story. in 4 years drugs will be in "olympic" control and more players will come.

it's obvious that the "gym" fitter golfers like mcilroy withdrew very very fast.

I use grinder as a catch all for the tours that are not PGA and the players are grinding it out trying to make it, or just trying to support the family.

  • 3 weeks later...

Since zika is in Florida now, I assume Rory, Day, Spieth, etal will drop out of the Florida swing next year. What a bummer.

    • 26 Nov 24 -  It was not a record breaking round by any means, but rather a simple walking of the back nine today playing TBWB (two ball-worse ball) where the challenge is to play the worse of the two shots played - could be an errant drive from the woods, a tree knocked ball that is 100 yds farther back down the fairway, a nGIR ball as opposed to a GIR….the goal today was to stay no worse than bogie thru nine.  Managed to achieve that goal - bogied 7 holes with one dbl and one par to counter the dbl.  It’s about staying focused and not letting a bad shot or lie derail, but rather be an opportunity.
    • Day 208 (26 Nov 24)- Opted to walk 9 today (was the back nine as they had a huge group going off the front) but instead of it being persimmons and blades, I had the regular gamers but made it a TBWB (two ball-worst ball) round.  This really challenges on several fronts - ball striking to be as consistent as possible, course management from non-optimal lies and keeping your head in it as it can be depressing to nail a shot on line-on target and the second rattles the trees right and it’s over 50 yards back and that’s the one you have to play.  The goal was to be no worse than bogie overall (+9).  Finished the round exactly on the number with some solid recoveries, no penalty strokes and only one 3-putt.
