Was not interested in this event whatsoever but saw some stuff on MD this morn and my interest level is beginning to increase.  Will probably be a snoozer but if Stenson, Fowler, Reed, Rose and Sergio are among the leaders, I may watch more than I had anticipated.

Me too ... I'm looking forward to it now, even though I was 'meh, whatever' leading up to the Olympics.

Majors are the pinnacle sure, but I cannot imagine a more emotional moment than standing on the podium with a gold medal and the anthem of your home country playing..........I actually think there will be a few players who regret their decision to skip.

Fukk the haters....I am all in on this tournament.....it means SOMETHING

And......just for kicks....Thorbjorn Oleson for the gold is my prediction

I just noticed this while researching how the Olympic golf will work . .

Unlike a regular professional tour event, the Olympic field is limited to 60 players in both the men’s and women’s tournaments. The U.S. has four players in the men’s competition because that’s the maximum number of qualifiers per country provided they’re in the top-15 of the world rankings. Outside the top 15, a maximum of two players per country could qualify.

It seems highly unfair that some countries can have four players in the tournament where others can only have 2.  I guess if I understand it right - the US, the UK and Australia can have 4 players but all the other countries can only have 2.  So not only do these 3 countries have the best players in the field but also twice as many.  Hardly seems sporting . . .

If they had gone strictly by rankings it would have been much worse. As it was they ended up with an event that was not worth as many points as probably a regular tour event based on the strength of the field. This is likely a big part of why some top players and some players struggling to hold onto their cards skipped.

I think her destiny was supposed to be tennis.

I can't believe how so many commentators on the GC just can not stop talking about the players that declined to attend the Rio Olympics. "Oh, how they are going to regret it." etc...

Just watched Faldo tonight go on and on about it - how sorry they will be, when they watch some one else get the gold medal.

I fully understand why some chose not to attend. I don't understand why so many use this as an excuse to keep beating them up about their decision.

This is old news by now. But, (for some reason) their shaming tirades go on and on. They talk more about those that declined than those that are competing.

It's high time for them to move on and direct their comments to the those that are playing golf in the '16 Rio Olympics.

I did gymnastics when I was young. The owner of our gym was a 1960 Bronze medalist on the balance beam. She did back walkovers as the difficult technical move.

For the most part, Olympic athletes have gotten faster and better in their sport, or for golf longer, but gymnastics has gone and done things that I did not think was humanly possible.

Me too, I feel like this is going to be an emotional tournament and I'm really looking forward to it. It has to been an awesome moment hearing your own national anthem.

I heard they'll play off for the Gold but haven't heard what they'll do for Silver or Bronze.  If they don't play off for those medals, golf is a sport where we could end up with 4 Silvers and 5 Bronze medals being awarded.  Slightly exaggerated for effect but not out of the realm of possibility.

Anyone heard how they'll manage this?

Good point.  I have no idea what they'll do, and can't seem to be able to find it online.  Although I would disagree that you could have 4 Silvers AND 5 Bronzes.  There are no medals for 6th place. :-P

I'd guess that they'd have a playoff for second if they had to.

They will have playoffs for all medals.

Yes, I guess in the scenario I describe, they'd award 4 silvers and no bronze.

It seems to me in my simple brain that The Olympics is a contest between countries . . so taking country out of it would just make it another golf tournament.

It's not a contest between countries.

It's a contest between athletes. They just happen to be representing countries.
