@rkim291968 do you have some personal experience in this area?

I have to wonder if aspiring to be a high paid professional in some other field wouldn't be more realistic.

I've thought pushing your kids toward golf is a great idea for the scholarships at college. But hoping to hit it big in the PGA is like hoping to hit it big in Hollywood!

Maybe.   My dad (ex national team coach) trained me as a boxer since I was 10 with the expectation that I'd be a world champ one day.   What I found was there are hundreds, if not thousands, out there who started training at that age for the similar reason.   The competition was too fierce.   Nowadays, there are women boxing in Olympics and I'd bet it would be much easier to be a world champ just b/c there are a lot less women entering into boxing.   I think golf is similar.   For Korean women, there are just less competition to beat vs Korean men trying to make it in PGA.    Of course all these is my subjective opinion.  Please take it with a grain of salt.

PS - in Korea, women's pro golf is much more popular and competitive.   There are a lot more ladies pro events and purse vs that of men.   That's another reason for Korean women's superior performance to their counterpart.

Apparently...

Oh, yes! We have 36 holes of Donald Ross designed course nearby, and it's amazing to see all the guys coaching their girlfriends out there, trying to get them through a single round of golf. These people need to be on the range taking lessons, or at the par 3, but no! They're at the big course where they have no business being!

Other countries are very smart at looking for niches where they can dominate.

Asking why there are so many female Korean golfers is like asking why are there so many computer science and IT specialists from India and Asia.  There's a void of talent and these people are smart enough to try to fill it.

Reminds me of the effort Sweden made that produced Annika Sorenstam. The government starts a "junior golf" program, or whatever they choose to call it. It's free, at least at first, and they attract some participants. They find those with some aptitude and coach them up!

Doesn't mean you'll always produce the #1 player in the world, but it's definitely a way to make a mark on world golf. And with the willing participation of the US and Great Britain, how far wrong could you go?

And let's not forget, this is partly about ensuring the future of golf! If you don't have the youth, you have nothing!

I get a little confused regarding the names of some of the Korean Ladies playing.  Earlier I referred to Sung Young Park, which I was corrected is supposed to be Sung Hyun Park. Then I looked up other links and see her name as Park Sung Hyun.  I always thought that the name "Park" is a last name and fairly common. In any event, the one whose form I was admiring was Sung Hyun Park who is also an accomplished archer I have read. The eventual winner, carded a -21 which is astonishing. Im Gee Chung ?  I would have to look it up again to be sure. Both ladies were phenomenal!

Koreans say the family name first.  Why Americans don't follow suit and say the name the way they say it, I have no idea.

Park is her family name (think last name) however in Korean naming (as well as other Asian countries i.e. Japan) the family name is given first, followed by the individual name.

Well, they write their family name first but my experience is they actually refer to each other by their 1st name, or 2nd name, I guess.  E.g., I had a girlfriend named Kim, In Suk.  I called her In Suk.  May not be universal but that was my experience.

And we actually refer to each other by our "first" names as well.  But when the whole name is given they say it "backwards" in relation to how we say ours.  I learned that when I went to the first World Baseball Classic in Anaheim in 2006.  We watched Korea play a couple of times and we had a blast rooting for them.  And cheering... "Park! Chan! Ho! ... Park! Chan! Ho! ..."  (At one point they had, I believe, 6 Lee's in their lineup) ;)

They also had a fantastic chant they did that we joined in on, but don't remember how it goes anymore.

I don't have any input on the reason, but for me personally I'm more interested in watching a diverse field. I definitely am watching less LPGA lately. Viewers need players they can identify with and root for which is diminished when the leaderboard is dominated by one country, regardless of which country that is.
